i love flight radar but don’t understand everything.

EG Why is there a US military plane that came from Norwich area and is now off the coast of Wales for example, do we do joint practice or something?

apologies if it’s a daft question…

There are US airbases in the UK, Mildenhall for one.

There’s a KC-135 tanker westbound out in that part of the world ATM…could be off Stateside, could be setting up to refuel somebody (who may not be visible on Flightradar)…have to wait and see, or not..

And the RAF/USAF/just about everybody in NATO do indeed do joint practices and joint exercises at times.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 02/10/2024 22:40

Draken is a contract provider of tactical fighter aircraft. Who knew?

liquidsquidli · 02/10/2024 22:40

Yes go in flight radar and have a look at the planes and click on them. They shape tell you what they are - or hints at it. This is a typhoon and it shows you it flight path

Thanks @JBJ and @notimagain interesting!

There is one from Norwich off the coast over the North see that doesn't appear to be going anywhere, so from what @notimagain says it could also be refueling somebody ? Really is fascinating.
We had a prop plane, quite big though, go low overhead earlier, popped onto flight radar and it was a US military aircraft going to the base up the road. Well I presume it was, the rest of the area isn't great for landing a plane unless you want to do it on a hillside.

There are loads of joint exercises. It's how the UK and its allies practice and one of the main reasons they are so ready to deploy.

The “privately owned” typhoon went over our way and I missed it! It’s mimicking the flight path of the zodiac01

I am fascinated by flight radar so went on it saw what you said but then my mind wandered thought with rockets from Israel and Lebanon and Iran I thought I woukd look surprise normal jets over Israel Lebanon and Iran thought they would have stopped flights atm

Edited

Airspace closures are down to the locals, and whether it is wise to use airspace that is open is down to individual airlines.

If you look closely you’ll see that traffic over places like Iran and Lebanon tonight is mainly the local carriers such as MEA (Middle East Airlines) Jordanian Airlines and one or two of the Gulf based LoCos….

Most of the major carriers, especially the Western ones, heading for the sub continent and the Far East are taking a southerly routing over Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Freakydeak · 02/10/2024 22:50

I like to look round the world. Head over to Ukraine.

PlasticineKing · 02/10/2024 22:51

DH has just said they often do exercises without trackers on and it’s probably deliberate that they have them on at the moment

LivelyGoldOrca · 02/10/2024 22:52

Tel aviv has the most watched plane at the mo :-(

Freakydeak · 02/10/2024 22:52

The Pacific islands are interesting too

LuluBlakey1 · 02/10/2024 22:53

There are lots of military planes from Norfolk, through Yorkshire and Northumberland up into the south of Scotland. Not sure what they are doing.

Freakydeak · 02/10/2024 22:54

The Norfolk ones have been doing large, repeated loops around an area of the north-sea off Tyneside.
