He went rather rogue at the end but he was a big part of my political upbringing. Sad news.

This sums it up for me too. My in-laws weren't fans but they'd acknowledge his influence and commitment.

Andrew Neil has tweeted that when he had lunch with him 3 weeks ago he was in fine form. Taken ill while making his speech, apparently.

Vaguely reminds me of John Smith or Donald Dewar

Nasty Bob is on Kuensberg if anyone can Facebook at this time of day 😖

Sigh. Autocorrect. Face it.

Badenoch latest Angry

According to Kemi Badenoch, autism diagnosis gives children 'better treatment in school' and 'offers economic advantages and protections.' This is so far removed from the reality for many folks, no wonder her document is called 'Conservatism in Crisis'

What's happened to the pinnocchio nose emoji? Withdrawn due to over use? We need it.

That document is chilling.

I take it you mean the manner of death (good old Scotland and its health outcomes..) and not the people! Most of my respect for AS did evaporate over time. I am sad he died but he was half the man both Smith and Dewar were.

Piggywaspushed · 13/10/2024 10:28

Lordy, I have just read that paragraph in context and it's even worse.

Badenoch can get in the Bin.

Notonthestairs · 13/10/2024 10:40

"That document is chilling."

I've just had a flick through - it complains (twice!) about autistic or disabled kids getting transport to school.

My child is one of those that gets transport - it's because there aren't enough SN schools and she has an hours journey twice a day. Lucky her.

The document also complains about employers duty of care in the context of Raab's bullying allegations - in the old days people would have been mentally more robust when their boss used physical gestures. The thing is I'm old enough to remember those days and I have no desire to see a return to them.

I can see why it would appeal to a particular group of people however.

Efacsen · 13/10/2024 10:58

I think Ian Birrell has an autistic son who is a wheelchair user - no wonder he's angry

DuncinToffee · 13/10/2024 10:58

I forgot to add the link to that document for people not on twitter

I am very surprised. Laura Kuennsberg apparently asked him a challenging question.

Presumably now the Tories can't threaten the BBC with reduced funding or something such as decriminalisation of the licence fee payment which would have the same effect.

LlynTegid · 13/10/2024 11:07

DuncinToffee · 13/10/2024 10:58

Thank you. Notable how many of the things the co-authors complain about are not only something the Tories had 14 years to fix, but result directly from decision that Tory governments made.

ilovesooty · 13/10/2024 11:16

Thank goodness that if Badenoch and her toxic ideas are chosen by the membership she'll only be able to to express them from the Opposition benches.

Notonthestairs · 13/10/2024 12:11

'If you are a child, you may well get better treatment or equipment at school – even transport to and
from home.' See pages 6 and 19.

Their argument is that the purpose of a diagnosis is for you to better understand yourself but it should not require anything further from your employer or school. So if you are a child with a disability you should not receive adjustments, appropriate equipment or transport to and from school.

The rest of the document puts our ills on regulations (HR in particular), environmentalism, the focus on Mental Health and 'the Bureacractic class' assault on capitalism and the nation state. A lot of the evidence and opinion quoted is US based. Matthew Goodwin gets a couple of name checks.

It's simply a different version of Truss. It fits perfectly with the IEA/Legatum agenda.

Complaining about adjustments for disabled kids and suggesting they are at an advantage by virtue of their diagnosis seems like a new low to me however.

Llttledrummergirl · 13/10/2024 12:35

I think I'm going to have to take that document in bits, and try not to get too cross. It starts with a lie, and I can't imagine it gets much better.

BIossomtoes · 13/10/2024 13:53

A lie in the first sentence - this isn’t the most left wing government this country has ever seen. That would have been Attlee’s, some of his MPs were communists.

PickAChew · 13/10/2024 14:07

The snippet to save others wading through. I need to tell DS2 to work on making himself better.

More lightheartedly, Kemi clearly never had a teacher who wrote R and L on her hands. This so needs taking out of context.

PickAChew · 13/10/2024 14:12

Maybe I should also tell DS2 to save the state money and catch the bus to school. I mean, he can't leave the house unsupervised and has a tendency to just step into the road, no matter how busy, but he can't be hoarding all those rights, can he now?

Zonder · 13/10/2024 14:27

Badenoch hits a new low there. Vile.

On another note, two Tesco's near me have a big display of Boris Johnson's books at the entrance as you walk in. I am going to write and complain. Nobody needs to be faced with that.
