I’ll get shot for this one, but allow asylum seekers to work after 6 months. It is ridiculous to have created a backlog deliberately and then have to support them while they are economically inactive through our own decisions.

No shooting from me, I am 100% with you on this. And on the rest of your post, so much good sense.

PandoraSox · 10/10/2024 19:12

No shooting from me either. It is ridiculous that they are not allowed to work.

👏👏
it doesn’t make any economic sense not allowing asylum seekers to work

Nope - no shooting here either.

I've said the same myself numerous times.

Stop saying we are paying X for "illegal immigrants".

We are paying for asylum seekers because we don't process their claims quick enough. They want to work. And if they work they pay into the economy.

Willowkins · 10/10/2024 20:09

In order to benefit the UK economy, we'd need working asylum seekers to spend their wages in the UK. What do people think about limiting what individuals can send abroad? Actually, I'd include hedge funds in that.

BestIsWest · 10/10/2024 20:16

No shooting here either - I say this all the time too.

The centrist Tory Reform Group refuses to endorse either Kemi Badenoch or Robert Jenrick in leadership race.

"Unfortunately, we have been consistently disappointed by the lack of engagement from the two candidates chosen by MPs.

"Both have used rhetoric and focused on issues which are far and away from the party at its best, let alone the One Nation values we cherish and uphold."

Rumours swirling of One Nation Tory MPs decamping to Lib Dems. How funny would it be if 25 go and Tories are not even the opposition.

RafaistheKingofClay · 10/10/2024 20:40

I don’t think they have 25 one nation Tories left for the next episode in the comedy death of the Tories.

This is much funnier now they aren’t supposed to be in charge of the country.

Let me get this straight. The Party which accepted millions from a man who hates all black women and wants to shoot them -or just shoot Dianne Abbott? - is now using a major chunk of that money to support a potential leader who is a black woman. That's right, isn't it? And the electorate of this country is supposed to roll over, have its tummy tickled, believe this is all perfectly reasonable and that the members of that Party are fit to choose a leader? When they have all stabbed one another in the back and relieved us of their company for the foreseeable future, maybe then a viable opposition can be scrabbled together from its smouldering remains.

MaybeNotBob · 11/10/2024 00:17

But the press won't report this, so it didn't happen...

Efacsen · 11/10/2024 07:43

Here's a topic that likely won't precipitate multiple threads today

Relief for Labour as UK economy sees growth

It's only by a small amount but will disappoint the shroud-wavers

newnamethanks · 11/10/2024 07:46

And a Grenfell councillor, Quentin Marshall, has donated 5k to her leadership grab. Hurrah for deregulation, just what we all need.

Such a good point. The morning that Badenoch was wheeled out to defend this was telling. I saw a real politician and she did not look comfortable. She is known not to be very clubbable with her colleagues, and wasn’t able to influence outcomes in her favour.

I wonder how she would work with her colleagues in a shadow cabinet? My guess is not that well.

If you take into account the IEA's involvement then this is quite a natural fit.

DuncinToffee · 11/10/2024 08:28

Jenrick is full on blaming the ECHR and immigrants for evertything. His donors are dodgy as fuck but almost no coverage.

Listening to Obama's speech to Pittsburgh this morning. This rang bells.

Obama: Now if you challenge Trump to elaborate and enumerate, his concepts, he will fall back on one answer. Vance does the same thing, it doesn't matter what the issue is, housing, healthcare, education, paying bills, their only answer is to blame immigrants.

Perfect timing Smile

Acutualy Jenrick and Vance are quite similar imo

Cewrtainly they both performed something of a volte-face when they got a sniff of power.

Let me explain something to you.....

If economy shrinks it's not the fault of the Tory's.

If it grows it is because the Tory's are so fab.

So this growth will have nothing to do with Labour. Wait til we have a bad month. Then Labour will be fully to blame alongside the public sector workers wanting fair pay.

itsgettingweird · 11/10/2024 09:32

Sorry that post was meant to have a Wink at the end!

DuncinToffee · 11/10/2024 09:44

And someone will start a thread on it quoting the Telegraph Wink

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/10/2024 10:10

I haven’t checked Twitter yet this morning but I’m guessing the economic growth is to do with the excellent economic position theTories left us in,

Figured I was safe from getting shot in here. It’s outside of the thread it’s an issue.

SerendipityJane · 11/10/2024 10:26

Interesting the moderate GOPers have also floated the idea of cutting the loony right (who remembers the days of the "loony left") MAGA contingent adrift and forming a new party.

If centrist tories do become lib dems (Churchill, of course, being a Liberal to start with) then Farage will lead the sharks to consume what's left into his image. Brexit will finally have destroyed the tories.

Obviously any incoming tory defectors will have to abandon Brexit. What a shame.
