Yes. The thing is that to win an elections the Tories need new voters. They have picked two candidates who are likely incapable of bringing in those votes.

They are definitely going down the ‘we want the 5 reform seats back not the 70 Lib Dem ones’ road. Lib Dem’s must be pretty happy right now. Bet there’s a whole load more seats that will come into play for them if the Tories are just going further right until 2029.

Cheguevarahamster · 09/10/2024 16:09

From Nicholas Watt:

A former Tory minister tells me: “I don’t know when the death certificate for the Conservative Party will be issued. But it will be a private funeral with no wake afterwards.”

Party time at Labour Central!

Stupid, stupid Tories.

Just watch, the members will vote for Badenoch now, hopefully they’ll be out of power for the rest of my lifetime. Three more election defeats should do it.

newnamethanks · 09/10/2024 16:28

Bloody hell. They really are that stupid. Beelzebub on a bicycle, I'm surprised.

Nope. It'll be Jenrick I reckon. But same result!

Really shocked. I thought Cleverley had it in the bag tbh.

Notonthestairs · 09/10/2024 16:38

I'm both quite pleased (Cleverly can sound quite reasonable/personable on occasions) and simultaneously frustrated that they've clearly no interest in winning back the L/D/Labour seats.

Tufton Street/Spectator/Telegraph/Marshall etc will all be delighted that the party is falling in line.

The IEA must be rubbing their hands together - chairman Neil Record is very much involved in Badenoch's campaign.

I am actually shocked that Cleverly didn't make the final 2, what a jump to the right.

And a step to the le eh eh eh ft Grin

Sorry couldn't resist - and I'm well aware it's the other way round in the actual song 😂

Agree with everyone else I was shocked. It came up on my news feed and saw it as I left work.

I'd have liked to see Tugenhat and Cleverly in the final 2.

DuncinToffee · 09/10/2024 16:45

From Lewis Goodall

The strategic choice faced by centre-right parties across the West over the last few years has been whether to draw lines in the sand with the hard right or embrace them. What we know from today's contest is that the next Conservative leader will choose the latter course.

Reform are fucked!

I wouldn't write off Farage.

I'm sure he'll spin it as neither Conservative candidate clearing his Brexit/tax/immigration purity test. And he'll just make more outrageous demands

Many polls (before and after the election) indicated that a large number of Reform voters would never return to the Conservative fold again.

Reform will struggle to attract more Tory voters, though, which is what they need in order to grow. And to put it bluntly, some of the current Reform voters may not be around by 2029.

Though I agree not to write Fromage off. He is an unflushable 💩

Conservative Party Leadership Election - 4th Round Result: Badenoch: 42 (+12) Jenrick: 41 (+10) Cleverly: 37 (-2) James Cleverly has therefore been eliminated. Kemi Badenoch and Robert Jenrick progress to the member's vote.

Not going to stop laughing at this for a while. And whatever Elon has done to Twitter, you still can’t beat it on a day like today.

newnamethanks · 09/10/2024 16:51

They're going to Fight for the Right to Nasty. Brexit and asylum seekers, the story continues. Bloody hell.

I don’t think Badenoch is better than Truss. She is about the same. She will have a longer shelf life than the lettuce because she is in opposition- but her speeches are equally ridiculous.

Notonthestairs · 09/10/2024 16:56

If I were Johnson I'd start putting out feelers for a byelection - get myself in position to make a move in the next few months/year(?)

Or I suppose Cleverly will be in as leader before the next election.

Notonthestairs · 09/10/2024 16:57

@bombastix - largely agree with that.

bombastix · 09/10/2024 16:57

It is very important to remember that the current Tory membership chose Truss.

So already you see they are several mints short of a tin.

They chose Truss.

Zonder · 09/10/2024 18:04

Stunned that the Tories are left with a choice of these two.

On another note, I just got this email from Full Fact. One in the eye for those who say Labour should have known about the £22bn

Thread 9 Starmer : Return to Westminster
RafaistheKingofClay · 09/10/2024 18:38

This probably works out quite well for Cleverly, thinking about it. The membership are nuts and we’re never going to vote for him to win. So he hasn’t actually lost much except from dignity for doing a deal and it going hilariously wrong. And any dignity disappeared a while ago while trying to be normal and still win by appealing to lunatics.

Meanwhile, at best, whoever wins is going to lead the Tories to a defeat in 2029 and be replaced. Most likely is going to get replaced before that. They are highly unlikely to ever end up as PM. Cleverly gets another shot when the Tories finally come to their senses when they realise chasing the Farage cultists is going to keep them out of power.

MaybeNotBob · 09/10/2024 19:31

Many polls (before and after the election) indicated that a large number of Reform voters would never return to the Conservative fold again.

Most reform voters, like Brexiteers, will blow with the wind or the way the Daily Heil tells them to because, as I think we all know, they're not generally the sharpest tools in the box...

MaybeNotBob · 09/10/2024 19:34

And I think many people are forgetting the one thing that we definitely know about most of the Tory membership, in common with Brexiteers.

Bad Enoch doesn't stand a chance...

Kemi Badenoch who thinks maternity pay is excessive and allegedly stalled compensation to Post Office scandal victims…

Or Jenrick who helped billionaire porn baron donor avoid paying £40m in taxes and paints over refugee children’s murals

What a time to be a Conservative.

SerendipityJane · 09/10/2024 20:59

Whoever wins won't last 2 years.

I predict Jenrick win with team Kemi sniping daily.

MaybeNotBob · 09/10/2024 23:12

Ah, of course. This is why Jimmy Dimly lost...
