Sky News is reporting Iran has launched missiles into Israel. It's very scarey. It should never have got to this escalation. Awful.

They will be shot down by Israel and the US. It’s more of a statement than an attempt to truly attack much like in April

LivelyGoldOrca · 01/10/2024 17:45

Ah shit

Fescue · 01/10/2024 18:09

Indeed, the US has said it will step in and defend Israel. This will include strikes on Iran to debilitate the regime.

If the reports of 100 plus missiles fired in the first wave are correct that is a bit more than a statement, it’s a very deliberate and calculated attempt to overwhelm the missile defence systems.

Could this actually become WW3? Terrifying.

No, but it’s terrifying for all those innocent civilians on all sides in the Middle East.

Why? I doubt it , bloody awful though for the ME

Fescue · 01/10/2024 18:34

There will be a lot of pressure to stop this from becoming WW3. There may come a day when nations manoeuvre to WW3, and it may be happening in the Pacific, but I do not think we are there yet. I expect we are seeing something big though, probably bigger than the 2003 Iraq War.

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 01/10/2024 18:34

Just watching it and feel so terrified and sad.

User37482 · 01/10/2024 18:35

I think this was very much anticipated. Feel for everyone in the region, Palestinians, Israelis, Lebanese. Must be terrifying.

How many were fired last time this happened ? Wasn't that long ago was it ?

No, because the raging hypocrisy of the West has long denied nuclear capability to the Muslim/Arab world, for fear they'd actually use it to defends themselves from Western aggression, so there is no chance of this escalating because the West and it's allies wouldn't dare attack anyone capable of fighting back on anything approaching even terms.

This.

Iran are no match for Israel.

BESTAUNTB · 01/10/2024 19:10

I’m so sorry for any Mumsnetters who have loved ones in the region.

justasking111 · 01/10/2024 19:12

It's stopped for now. Number of missiles varies between 200-500. The Israelis are free to leave their safe rooms.

MeMyCatsAndI · 01/10/2024 19:14

God sake, why do these countries never fucking learn from their past mistakes.

It won't turn into WW3, they don't have the tech to defend themselves from nuclear threat but still everywhere is just war, war, war.

From memory just over 100 ballistic missiles fired last April (plus a couple of hundred usually easier to intercept cruise missiles and drone).

On the non UK news I”m watching ATM the journalists on the spot are saying about 180 ballistic missile fired tonight in two waves.

I don't think Israelis feel the same as you as they dash to their bunkers and pray that the Iron Dome defence system doesn't fail them.

They were drones not ballistic missiles. Different animal entirely and could be taken out by defense jets. Ballistic missiles can't be shot down.

Very true, and even when Iron Dome works (early reports are the majority of the inbound missiles were intercepted tonight) there is still the issue of where does the resultant debris end up.

A lot of the images on TV tonight appear to show the results of interceptions…which is in many cases is some hefty pieces of metal falling to earth.

I actually completely agree with Trump, he had them all under lock & key.
He needs to get back into power.

Do you feel the way about Russia?

And it appears you actually want it to escalate, I hope I’m wrong.
