Sky News is reporting Iran has launched missiles into Israel. It's very scarey. It should never have got to this escalation. Awful.

No, because the raging hypocrisy of the West has long denied nuclear capability to the Muslim/Arab world, for fear they'd actually use it to defends themselves from Western aggression, so there is no chance of this escalating because the West and it's allies wouldn't dare attack anyone capable of fighting back on anything approaching even terms.

It's hard to tell who is posting in good faith and who is just writing the most ridiculous thing they can think of for the effect.

Indeed. Imagine if Hamas had nuclear weapons for example.

It's mumsnet chat!!

Expect nothing much from it

They will be shot down by Israel and the US. It’s more of a statement than an attempt to truly attack much like in April

It seems the iron dome can’t keep up.

blackcherryconserve · 01/10/2024 19:16

I don't think Israelis feel the same as you as they dash to their bunkers and pray that the Iron Dome defence system doesn't fail them.

Of course it will be terrifying to actually be in Israel I’m not saying it’s a harmless statement it clearly is dangerous . My personal opinion is from a distance (which I’m very grateful for)

blackcherryconserve · 01/10/2024 19:18

They were drones not ballistic missiles. Different animal entirely and could be taken out by defense jets. Ballistic missiles can't be shot down.

Nope to both.
There were drones and ballistic missiles. The exact numbers reported vary a bit:

NYTimes said “In April, Israeli officials said the Iranian attack involved 185 drones, 36 cruise missiles and 110 surface-to-surface missiles fired toward Israel..”

Sky said “Iran’s attack on 13 April saw 170 drones, 120 ballistic missiles and 30 cruise missiles..”

Secondly, ballistic missiles can be shot down both by Iron Dome surface to air and fighter jets air to air. Drones are harder to shoot down than missiles as their flight path is not as predictable.

The latest update from BBC says
”In an update, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says approximately 180 missiles were fired from Iran towards Israel.” as of 19:37 BST

So this retaliation is as carefully calibrated as the April retaliation was imho.

Fescue · 01/10/2024 19:44

Nevertheless, this is not a 'Take the win!' moment.

rumblegrumble · 01/10/2024 19:46

The attack is apparently over and Israelis told they can leave shelters. Thankfully, no causalities so far reported.

Can you expand on what you mean by not a take the win moment?

All I see is unnecessary and avoidable loss expanding outwards to engulf the Middle East for all its inhabitants.

If that’s what you mean also, then I agree. This isn’t something to celebrate but it also isn’t something that warrants further escalation unless this was just the first salvo of many more missiles and drones.

Could this actually become WW3? Terrifying.

I actually do think so.

I feel as if the world is sitting in a pot of hot water and not realising the temperature is increasing to a boil.

I would much rather be wrong though.

Aren't Iran not far off getting nuclear weapons, and potentially being helped to do so by Russia?

ToBeDetermined · 01/10/2024 20:05

“Most of the Middle East is ruled by idiots who have no grip on reality, and would press the nuclear button in a heart beat..”

The only country to have pressed the nuclear button ever was the USA, and they did it twice. It would be good not to forget who is really the power that is most feared in the Middle East. Especially if Trump wins the election in a months time.

Oh... shit. Confused

Dymaxion · 01/10/2024 20:08

Iran and Russia are allies, but Russia is quite busy dealing with its own war at the moment and has allegedly needed weapons from Iran, so what could they offer Iran in terms of support ?
This conflict sadly feels like it has been going on for my entire life ( over 50 years ), in one manifestation or other, so I am not getting any WW3 vibes from it just yet.

I feel so sorry for all the ordinary Palestinians, Lebanese and Israeli people who just want to live their lives without fear and those in Iran who would rather live without constant fear of oppression by their own government.

Vergus · 01/10/2024 20:12

This is true. America also denounces Israel’s intentions to move the war into a different phase whilst funding shipments of armoury to the IDF costing millions. It is in America’s interests to have an outpost of “civilised” ideology in the Middle East……….I’m not sure anyone gets out of this with clean hands

Seriously?
how many rockets have Egypt and Jordan launched at Israel?
how many of their civilians dead?

Yes, the US has entered the Pontus Pilate phase of hand washing in public saying it’s all Israel and oh we told them not to while sending troops out the back door and miraculously despite being supposed shocked at Israel’s military actions just coincidentally happen to be in perfect position to provide close air support.

Vergus · 01/10/2024 20:21

I fear America is the puppet master - what a surprise

Well an Israeli tank did accidentally kill some Egyptian border guards, and the IDF did accidentally bomb the Rafah crossing around 10-11 times if memory serves.

Nobody gets out of any war with clean hands.

as country is not considered civilised if the leaders of the country are war mongering maniacs and have been declared war criminals by the international court.

Too, didn’t Jordan shoot down some of the Iranian missiles in April to protect Israel?
