Sky News is reporting Iran has launched missiles into Israel. It's very scarey. It should never have got to this escalation. Awful.

I don't think a complete WW, but definitely it's snowballing a bit isn't it

It feels like a hideous pattern, this isn't the first time Israeli military have gone into Lebanon is it ? Not the first time Iran has fired missiles at Israel ? Its just so bloody tragic that so many innocent civilians get caught up in it every time.
This type of conflict perpetuates the draw of the likes of Hamas and Hezbollah, who lets be honest aren't generally that popular amongst ordinary people, until events like this happen. This conflict will give them a steady stream of wannabe martyrs for a very long time to come.

I agree. I have a massive sense of Deja Vu.

Could someone explain to me in simple terms how this would escalate into WW3? If it’s the middle east involved in the conflict, what does that have to do with us? Why would we get involved beyond the usual calls for peace and offering refuge for those escaping the violence? Why would it descend into WW3?

We are already involved- we are, along with the US and whoever else, giving Israel weapons. The US have said they will intervene and support Israel tactically with air and missile strikes on Iran.

It's the same with Ukraine. Zelensky is asking for permission to use weapons the US and we are providing him with to attack Russian cities. If we say yes, Putin will not put up with that.

I am so sick of men making decisions and playing Billy BigBalls and turning the world to shit for women, children and animals.

People sleep peaceably in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

The Gov press release states we are no longer giving Israel weapons.

It has more clarity than the media reports which state 30 out of 350. Which implies we have only stopped a token number.

But according to the Gov- zero weapons. That’s why Israel’s reaction was as scathing as it was.

I paraphrased from it in an earlier post.

I agree we are still complicit as we have sent weapons for 11 out of 12 months of war…it could be too little and too late.

UK suspends around 30 arms export licences to Israel for use in Gaza over International Humanitarian Law concerns

The government has taken the decision that the UK will suspend arms export licences to Israel for use in military operations in Gaza, following a review of Israel’s compliance with international humanitarian law.

pleas can someone explain why the UK government and US government are supporting Israel against Iran when Israel bomber Lebanon yesterday?

Civilians are being killed!

Surely Israel is just as much in the wrong as Iran?

And why shouldn’t we help Israel with weapons? Hamas are receiving weapons, a lot of them, from Iran. Russia, China and North Korea supply weapons to Iran.

I’m so sorry for any Mumsnetters who have loved ones in the region.

Thank youFlowers my family spent the evening in their 'strong room'. For the first time ever my cousin sounded scared. Israel will carry on defending itself and I believe will succeed as there is no other choice.

Hezbollah has been sent thousands of rockets into Israel over the past year. Tens of thousands of Israelis have been evacuated and haven't been home since last October. Israel is not bombing "Lebanon" in general. Israel is attacking the terrorist organisation (as proscribed by the UK) Hezbollah. There were celebrations throughout the middle east after Nasrallah was killed.

You might have seen pictures of Lebanese evacuating and felt sad, maybe angry at Israel. Have you seen any pictures of Israelis evacuating? No, I imagine you didn't even realise!

Because Israel is a strategic ally in the ME and has always had the support of the US. The US has been after Iran for a long time and has provided over a billion in weapons. It's using the conflict as a proxy to get them some terrorists. They never learn.

I don't even know where to start with a statement of such ignorance.

"This isn’t about who is or isn’t civilised, because war isn’t civilised despite the fact we have a civilised war rule book that is often not followed.

This is all about claim to disputed territories."

"Unfortunately it's not just about land. It's more existential than that alone. It's also about a philosophy that wants to rid the world of Jews and create a global caliphate."

^^This. This is only about killing Jews, as was October 7th. I wish the world would wake up because the next phase will be about killing anyone who doesn't share their ideology. It's a cancer.

History and lots of it. Ask yourself why Lebanon is in such a mess ? not just because of the recent bombings, but how did Beirut go from being the playground of the rich and famous in the early 1970's to what it is today ? this current conflict cannot be untangled from all those that have gone before, we get relatively brief glimpses of something that looks like peace in the region, but they are fleeting.

As a matter of fact, Israel also has been bombing southern Lebanon for almost a year. Before the 23rd, 100,000 Lebanese had been evacuated from the border area, this is now over a million. Before the 23rd, 60,000 Israelis had been evacuated from the border area, this is now over 100,000.

There are maps of where each side has struck with rockets or bombs, and even this one showing only the 24hrs from 29-30 Sept gave me the impression of fairly general bombing in southern Lebanon.

And why exactly should Netanyahou be singled out? How about Putin who had waged war against Ukraine for far too long now.

I think they both aren't quite right in the mind. Maybe a touch of dementia. Both megalomaniac.

Talking of history, Moshe Feiglin and the day of judgment:

Er, that’s a guy reading from the Old Testament.
It’s not technically history but religion.
And to conflate today’s Iranians with the ancient Babylonians is like conflating today’s Italians with the ancient Romans.

Viviennemary · 01/10/2024 23:26

I Must say I did feel sympathy for Israel when the hostages were taken and innocent people murdered. But it's gone too far now. Why is it OK for Israel to bomb Lebanon but not OK for Iran to bomb Israel.

I hope I’m wrong, but “certain” arms licences sounds to me like others are still being supplied. Either way the website could be clearer.

I did watch the first ten minutes ofit. He told the story of Purim from the Book of Esther and then he told the story of the Babylonian destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem which is in the book of Kings. I didn’t watch the entirety, being read two Bible stories that are being used to conflate modern day states and peoples with ancient enemies from religious tradition was enough.

Agree, it could definitely be clearer. I sincerely hope that the pp is right, and that we are not still selling any arms to Israel, but I would like more clarity on this.

If we have stopped, that's good. But I would still like to see the British government taking a stronger stance on condemning Israel's actions. That doesn't mean that they should stop condemning the actions of Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran etc as well, but we need to speak out equally strongly against the wrongs committed by all sides.
