How to beat Reform according to Jenrick, be more right wing

OP posts:

I do wish interviewers would ask those who want to leave the ECHR about Northern Ireland and the GFA

But if you want to recover voters from Reform by being more like Reform then doesn't that mean you no longer exist?

They aren't interested in the practicalities which are spelt out in this 🧵

x.com/philipmurraylaw/status/1840674737090896144?s=46&t=Uw4lJNwxFZFnX0Xs3doHYg

As it explains pulling out of the ECHR won't just impact the GFA but a number of other commitments. Nor does it resolve Rwanda as it is not the sole reason for the Supreme Court's judgement.

Pure laziness on the part of the press to let this slip by.

Or they are being partisan.

Indeed.

Lewis Goodall* talked about this on the News Agents and drew comparison between Labour with Corbyn in 2015. "We didn't win as we weren't left wing enough ". Its the same for the conservatives. They didn't win as they weren't conservative enough. But as you say - you cant out reform, reform. This an existential crisis for the Tory party and I'm all here for it.

*his book on this period is very good BTW.

If the US "suspended" their constitution, then UK courts would probably refuse to uphold any extradition requests. Also the FCO would be forced to advice UK citizens not to travel there.

If I were a people smuggler, I would be paying the Tories a Kings ransom to scrap the ECHR. The same way drugs barons have been paying them for decades to keep our drugs laws.

Notonthestairs · 01/10/2024 10:23

The way the ECHR is applied may at times irritate and as in all human affairs no court will always be perfect in its reasoning and decisions. But the ECHR has done immense good throughout Europe. Precisely because it is a " living instrument", it has been able to promote human rights. We take for granted today that illegitimate children should not suffer discrimination and that homosexual relationships should not be criminalised. But delivering these reforms is just some of the good work of the ECHR. As Churchill saw, it's drafting and promotion has been one of the great achievements of UK soft power for the common good of all.
At the end of his video, Jenrick gratuitously offers an irrelevant image which is intended, I infer, to show an immigrant gloating over money he is getting. The only purpose of this is to stir up hatred against immigrants. That is why we need the ECHR. It is also why he is showing himself entirely unfit for office.

Sorry should have given that post quotation marks.

Funny how of all the - sizeable - demographics they could have included in that, they managed to find a "trans voice". It would have been easier to find a SNP voter in Cornwall.

Piggywaspushed · 01/10/2024 11:17

I offered the article without comment . But nonetheless, those are her constituents and they were found and deserve as much representation as others (unless you are saying minority voices don't matter to their MPs?). The more conventional , FWIW, middle aged female mid article is clearly alluding to her (to her single minded) focus on that debate, too.

You can't vote SNP in Cornwall. Last time I checked trans people are entitled to vote for any party standing in their constituency.

Canterbury has a large student population.

Tbh , I found the Corbyn fans views equally interesting. They are obviously rather conflicted in how she has made them feel.

Piggywaspushed · 01/10/2024 11:18

Note also that the trans person still voted Labour.

I just found an agenda being pushed.

I quite agree about constituents deserving to be represented. They also deserve not to be scammed. And as far as I am concerned if you stand on a party platform - with all the freebies resources they provide - and later leave that party then you should have the decency to stand down as an MP and allow your constituents to make an informed choice. That goes for any MP of any stripe.

Currently Rosie Duffield is no better than Lee Anderson when he jumped ship from Labour.

Still, in her own way, she is ironically taking the heat off Starmer. Suggesting she's a bit dim, really.

Piggywaspushed · 01/10/2024 11:33

Oh , good old Fuller. Not my MP but next door. Smarmy, sleazy man.

countrygirl99 · 01/10/2024 11:57

He's my MP. I took an instant dislike to him at hustings when he first stood for North Beds. Smarmy git was my first impression and he's done or said nothing to change that.

MaybeNotBob · 01/10/2024 12:30

Saw on twitter this morning someone suggesting that if Badenoch won the leadership contest, all Labour MPs would have to declare it as a gift...

🤣🤣🤣

ilovesooty · 01/10/2024 13:07

I still wouldn't be surprised if the Conservative MPs work out some sophisticated voting to ensure that Badenoch doesn't make the final two.

ilovesooty · 01/10/2024 13:09

And little Tennyson has given it a great deal of thought.

ilovesooty · 01/10/2024 13:10

This was yesterday. He was 18 months old.

The leadership contenders fight over things such as the European court of human rights that the public cares little about. On the right, Danny Kruger (a Jenrickite) told one meeting: “We need to win the culture war.” More in Common polling shows overwhelming public non-interest in that stuff. On the left, in the beleaguered One Nation caucus, only four MPs attended to hear Tom Tugendhat introduced as “the next prime minister of the most successful party in the world”, to declare – well, nothing much.

I had hoped Kruger was in the Tory bin.

Poor old Tugendhat.

Backfire: Culture Wars and the General Election

A new briefing from More in Common, commissioned by 38 Degrees, draws on public opinion experiments, polling and focus groups to explore the electoral implications of culture wars.
