Thoughts with all having a difficult time at the moment 💐

Kemi Badenoch tells Times Radio that maternity pay has "gone too far."

“We need to have more personal responsibility. There was a time when there wasn’t any maternity pay and people were having more babies.”

I cant remember where i saw it, but the tory leadership contest was described as being like a couple of bald men fighting over a comb. Frankly it has now degenerated into a competition as who can show themselves as being even more regressive and unpleasant than reform. Grim.

Willowkins · 29/09/2024 13:13

Wait so KB thinks women will have more babies if there's less paid maternity leave? It's like she doesn't understand consequences. Surely this 'time' she's talking about is the 50s when there was high employment and yet women were forced to give up their jobs when they got pregnant. Yes there was a baby boom. What else was there for women to do plus it turns out reducing the supply of workers also meant higher wages - and that was dealt with by importing cheaper workers from overseas. But oh, now that's a bad thing apparently. How about we just treat people with decency and respect?

cardibach · 29/09/2024 13:14

Apparently Kemi gave up work when she got pregnant. Yes, my love, but we don’t all have investment banker husbands, do we? Or husbands at all. And some of us think our contribution in the workplace is valuable (and good for our mental health).

BIossomtoes · 29/09/2024 13:52

She was dreadful on LK this morning. I’m kind of hoping she wins, it would be highly entertaining.

@PandoraSox and @Willowkins I am so sorry about your cats. They steal your heart and then break it when they go.

This times a squillion.

Hope you are recovering OK @Willowkins

"There was a time when there wasn't any maternity pay and people were having more babies'"

I find her comments fascinating - it's a deliberate hark back to barefoot & pregnant in the kitchen isn't it.

I don't suppose she thought to mention the cost of housing? Of food? Of transport? How any of that influences parents?

She said this morning that she was appalled when canvassing when a woman said she’d go and fetch her husband. Apparently that’s symptomatic of a culture we don’t want in this country. I think it’s symptomatic of someone who’d rather drink a bottle of bleach than be harangued by her on their own doorstep.

Saucery · 29/09/2024 14:45

I gave up work when pregnant with DS, for 6 years, then very part time. I still think KB is talking a pile of utter shite and is a disgrace to feminism to propose reducing maternity pay.

I’d probably claim to have to defer to the dog, or the under stairs spider rather than chat to her on the doorstep.

Oh, the sainted Kemi, who's apparently so keen on standing up for women.

Yes, I notice the tumbleweed in FWR. Almost tempted to start a thread there along the lines of "now Kemi has turned out to be a complete fuckhead, who will lead us now ?"

Almost. There's paint drying first.

Oh I expect those posters who still worship at her feet won't hear a word said against her.

dontcallmelen · 29/09/2024 15:20

The sainted Kemi has finally jumped the shark

Oh goodness just saw this, really very sorry pets can have a very special place in our hearts & lives💐

Llttledrummergirl · 29/09/2024 15:40

@Willowkins and @PandoraSox I am so sorry. Our pets souls are often larger than those of humans, and just because they are with us for shorter periods, it doesn't mean we love them any less.

Kuenssberg was a tory love in this morning and the Rosie Duffield thing is ridiculous. I wonder what donations she's accepted down the years?

At least one donation of £10,000 for election campaign funds in August this year

Sorry to be be a killjoy, but I hold all my politicians to the same standards. So far she may as well be Lee Anderson. Without the charm.

No real hormonal contraception in the 50s, either. And no come back for women whose husbands helped themselves whenever they were horny, whether in the mood or not.

And if not married to the child's father, forced in many cases to give your baby up for adoption.

Quite!
It sounds like she'd get on well with Trump's VP mate, Vance. (And all the rest...) Wouldn't surprise me if she had her own 'Project 2025' ready to go.

I don't.

If the hate for this government at the same level in 2029, the Tories could end up as the largest party, and their leader become Prime Minister. So much as I can see the attraction of a Tory leader nearly as bad as Liz Truss or Boris Johnson, I don't want the possibility of them leading the country.

I feel confident that whoever wins the Tory leadership now, will not be leading what is left of the Tory party in 2029.

Labours current "woes" are being magnified by a a slavering right wing sympathetic media who can't quite decide if they still like the Tories, or whether Reform will sell more papers.

The only thing Rosie Duffields resignation is the beginning of, is her career in cant beginning. Long may it continue, along with her search for more principles.

itsgettingweird · 29/09/2024 16:26

Notonthestairs that is a great bit of legislation re housing that I also fully support and wish it was getting more media traction.

It would certainly add to the contest of the worst Tory this past decade.

She may even beat Truss!

Absolutely. I agree with all of that.
