Yvette Cooper, "It's so long overdue.. This government will treat violence against women and girls as the national emergency it really is"

I hope that means money and statutory reform. And prison for domestic abusers. Otherwise it is all lip service and I will have seen it all before.

Crack down on the organised gangs, for sure. But I can see a lot of innocent people getting their benefits suspended too with the scheme where banks tell DWP if savings go over the limit etc.

No problem with people who are claiming but also working getting caught out.

However, small time benefit cheats aren't going to be paid into bank accounts, its all cash in hand, money goes nowhere near a bank, are these people stupid?

I wonder if they will crack down on HMRC deals on tax? off shore banking?

I'm seeing the Renters Bill actually being a Landlords charter to sell off property.... state telling LLs that a perfect good kitchen must be ripped out if older 20 years... i never thought i'd see this.

Still nothing on Dentistry....... as the BDA said "we've seen this before, Govt promises action but then does nothing"

From Sky News

The defence secretary John Healey has left the Labour Party conference early to chair a Cobra meeting on the Middle East.

Thousands British nationals have been advised to leave Lebanon by commercial means while they are still available - many are believed to be dual citizens.
Sources would not say whether evacuation is being discussed

My kitchen is nearly 20 years old. It still looks great and the only reason I might change it would be if and when I'm bored with it - not because it's "worn out" Confused If you put in quality products, they last.

RafaistheKingofClay · 24/09/2024 13:01

I’ve found some elusive Tory voters on the bus. Apparently the Rwanda plan should never have been scrapped by Starmer. And Sunak would have won by a mile if he’d waited until October to call the election.

Willowkins · 24/09/2024 13:07

I finally caught up. I'm in hospital for an op tomorrow and waiting for lunch is giving me lots of time.

I agree with AC. You can't just impose policy on people, you need to introduce and explain it too, if you're going to have any chance of selling it to people.

My alternative for WFA is simply to say they're introducing this in 2025. That gives people time to plan, claim pension credit, save up and so on. It's not a U-turn but takes some of the sting out of it.

That sucks! I got banned from a group I was active in several years ago for being GC and I'm still upset by it!
Makes me appreciate the MN moderation even more

Thanks @CassieMaddox. I'm pretty cross about it and it sounds as though you were too.

SadSad
The situation in the middle east is horrific. I feel like Netanyahu has lost the plot completely,I wish the US could do more to hold him to account.

I am pleased the UK government is taking a tougher line and hope they continue to do so.

If that was a rented property, under the new Renters Rights bill, you'd have to change it out..... regardless of condition.

Yy hope all goes well also piggy & any posters who are still unwell hopefully feeling a little better💐
another one agreeing with AC Labour need to address the comms as a matter of urgency maybe they underestimated the vitriol/ sheer stupidity of the majority of the MSM plus all the other ways of pushing an agenda via SM.
This thread is my island of sanity, so many posters have educated me signposting articles/books that I probably wouldn’t have seen or read & the major bonus no one is spiteful.

Israel is now a law unto itself.... they aren't listening to the US/EU let alone the UK.

Its all about staying in power and out of court.

prettybird · 24/09/2024 13:57

At least I'm in Scotland where we have different rules although I have no idea what they are Grin

I do know we don't have minimum rental periods. (Am going to need ro bone up on the regulations here as if we manage to buy my dad's place, we'll be renting it out for a few years before selling our current home and moving there ourselves Wink)

So much for "Net Zero" Hmm Replacing perfectly serviceable cabinets and appliances is not a good start Angry

On the bus, rafais? Hope you told them what the blessed Thatcher thought of bus passengers😀

@Alexandra2001 I get that short term that’s a problem - but private renting is not good for anyone except the landlord really. Is it possible that LL selling property might rebalance the market a bit?

No. I ended having a debate about wheelchair users with them when the bus driver wouldn’t let the wheelchair user on even though the space wasn’t in use by a wheelchair user. They objected to her arguing with the bus driver over it.

DuncinToffee · 24/09/2024 14:56

Will catch up with the full speech later but have seen that Starmer is promising that

Veterans, survivors of domestic abuse, young care leavers who need homes will get a roof over their heads

and

The Hillsborough Law will be introduced before the next anniversary in April 2025

Bloody hell. What is wrong with people? That's awful. My spirits have just been raised by KS speech - I should probably know better - but sunk again on reading that. So depressing. Well done for supporting her, it's not easy to argue with a bus full of passengers.

newnamethanks · 24/09/2024 15:16

I'm just going to say 👏 to Yvette Cooper and 👏 Keir Starmer. It's rare for me to be captivated by political speeches.

The bus driver hadn’t let her on the bus at that point. She was still arguing with him outside. Not sure if she heard the guy point out that she should just wait for the next one. No way would I be doing that if I didn’t have to when the bus service is as unreliable as it is at the moment. She probably couldn’t get on the previous one because it only did 1/4 of the journey then turned around and went back.

itsgettingweird · 24/09/2024 16:14

No way! I would be rather be moaning about Labour than having to put up with another 5 years of the Tories.

Absolutely. Labour haven't done anything terrible. They've made some unwise decisions but compared to the previous government I'd rather still have them in charge right now.

They haven't even done their budget yet. I'm hoping they pull it back together and absolutely agree with blossoms that they NEED a better comms team. Like yesterday!

NEW: Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced that some female prisons could close under major plans to reduce the number of women in jail "For women, prison isn’t working. Rather than encouraging rehabilitation, prison forces women into a life of crime."
