The bus driver hadn’t let her on the bus at that point. She was still arguing with him outside. Not sure if she heard the guy point out that she should just wait for the next one. No way would I be doing that if I didn’t have to when the bus service is as unreliable as it is at the moment. She probably couldn’t get on the previous one because it only did 1/4 of the journey then turned around and went back.

I've been with a friend in a wheelchair when we were refused boarding to 3 buses in a row for no good reason other than the driver apparently cba to put the access ramp down. (Broken/too busy/already in use by an empty pushchair)
She says it happens all the time. It's disgusting.

NEW: Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced that some female prisons could close under major plans to reduce the number of women in jail "For women, prison isn’t working. Rather than encouraging rehabilitation, prison forces women into a life of crime."

Yes 👏👏

It never used to on this route. I’ve definitely seen them ask people to move or tell them to get off and get the next one. This one was all ‘I can’t ask people to get off’.

I was beginning to think they wouldn’t do the women's prisons thing. It’s been sorted for ages and a Labour government is the only one that will sort it. No chance of a Tory one ever closing prisons to work more on rehabilitation. It would free up spaces for men in the short term if they could staff one or two and convert them.

Saucery · 24/09/2024 17:46

I suspect freeing up spaces to use for men is the immediate plan.
Hope meaningful rehabilitation for women is invested in.

Some bus drivers really do show an attitude when you ask them to put the ramp down. Most are fine, but some are really resentful.

From the Times

The legislation will allow fraud investigators to compel banks to hand over information about people’s finances if there is a suspicion they are claiming benefits they are not entitled to.
It will also give them powers of “search and seizure” of people’s property in cases involving organised criminal gangs that are exploiting the benefits system.
The crackdown is designed to save the taxpayer £1.6 billion over the next five years by tackling fraud and reducing overpayments. Starmer will say that he wants to ensure that “every penny” of taxpayers’ money is spent on Labour’s pledge to “rebuild public services” ….
Banks will be required to tell the benefit system if people have savings of more than £16,000, the cut-off point for claiming benefits, or have been abroad for more than the four weeks allowed for universal credit claimants. Inspectors will then investigate and seek to recover overpayments.

Hopefully the use of AI will prevent the cases like we heard about earlier where some people managed to set up 5 (or similar) benefits claims from abroad and were only caught because they used the same information on each one (like an email or the address or something).

They fraudulently claimed 10's of thousands.

I don't believe it's about stripping Bob down the road who can't walk after his stroke from his PIP.

I absolutely hope this is the plan.

But they also need to ensure real rehabilitation plans inside prisons for men too. Literacy classes, budget classes, a skill or trade. My friend is a probation officer and she said the number of her guys who live a life of crime who often go down that route because they can't read let alone complete forms is shocking. For them prison is safe because they aren't asked to be able to understand numbers just to be able to eat.

And this is why education must be a huge investment. Long term it can save money.

Israel is now a law unto itself.... they aren't listening to the US/EU let alone the UK.

Its all about staying in power and out of court.

Netanyahu's government aren't even listening to Israelis. I worry for everyone in the region at the minute.Sad

Given that have done this with women’s prisons and the appointment of Timpson I suspect this will happen. Or at least we will be going in that direction. It has to be cheaper than repeatedly looking people up.

I'm seeing the Renters Bill actually being a Landlords charter to sell off property....
@Alexandra2001 I get that short term that’s a problem - but private renting is not good for anyone except the landlord really. Is it possible that LL selling property might rebalance the market a bit?

Edited

Well it will help people in a position to buy, as more properties come onto the market.... thats very true.

But thats of little help for evicted tenants who cannot afford to buy or are older and despite being able to afford a mortgage, cant get one as they are in their 50s etc.

Rents in Plymouth now for a 3 bed are up around 1000 to 1400 and they are extremely rare, UC housing support is approx £660......

My friend was evicted after 21 years, 2 months notice, LL was selling because of the new regs coming in and that was the Tories Renters bill. LL was as nice as they could be but that didn't help my friend, fortunately family stepped in for her and bought her a house that she now rents from them but otherwise, she would be homeless.

I think these measures, doubtless well intentioned, need to wait until there is a social housing alternative.

There is a thread on this new bill.... some very hard hearted so called LLs on there or are they just Tories?

InMySpareTime · 25/09/2024 08:16

There should be scope for councils and HAs to buy houses at auction (often from LLs wanting a quick sale) which could ensure people who need it can access housing.
When LLs sell up, it doesn't reduce the number of actual residences, it just changes how many are owner occupied. If older renters can't get a mortgage but younger renters can, the act of younger renters buying will free up a rental property which the older renter can then rent.

If LLs can't provide decent property at a fair market rent, they aren't good LLs, and decent housing is a basic human need.

CassieMaddox · 25/09/2024 08:21

Rents are outrageous now. I don't know how people afford then and suspect there must be many women trapped in relationships because they can't afford to move out

Yes they are and the new bill will make them even higher.

BIossomtoes · 25/09/2024 08:37

I think it’s about time we had rent controls again, they should form part of the new bill.

Ha. I dare you to go and say that on the thread in money matters! You will make them so so cross.

prettybird · 25/09/2024 08:42

Ds bought his first flat a year ago (we'd let him stay here rent free after he'd graduated but paying for his food and requiring him to put £200/month into his Help to Buy ISA plus when we found out about his allowance from work towards utilities for working at home, give us that Wink). Ironically, in Glasgow it's significantly cheaper to buy and to pay a mortgage than to rent Confused

I might just do that, what fun! No, that would start a bunfight of epic proportions, wouldn’t it? I do think it’s needed though, it’s what we’ve done at previous points in history when there’s been a crisis in the rental sector.

Alexandra2001 · 25/09/2024 09:01

I think rent controls could work if there was a vibrant Social Housing sector but there isn't.

All controls would do is make more LLs sell up.

Funnily enough, the new bill seems to suggest that rents should increase every year, subject to the market rent, which is a bit self fulfilling, isn't it?

Llttledrummergirl · 25/09/2024 10:25

Unless something drastic happens my ds2 will be living at home forever for a few more years, more than has the 10% deposit, unfortunately, because he is on slightly more than minimum wage, he needs around £60k to bridge the gap between what they will loan him, and the cheapest property.

They will allow him to buy unaffordable housing though, where the rent portion makes it more expensive per month than a slightly larger mortgage. It's crazy.

If bad landlords want to sell up cheap, he may actually be able to start living.

Evenstar · 25/09/2024 10:40

I am a landlord, not through choice, as thanks to the Truss mini budget I was unable to sell my house despite drastically reducing the price and trying for over a year. I have done absolutely everything by the book, I fitted new carpet and made sure everything was in order before the tenants moved in re gas and electrical certificates etc and any repairs have been done promptly via my excellent letting agent. Although I am receiving rent, my prime motivation was to protect the house by having it heated and occupied as I am now four hours drive away.

I am also getting some roof repairs done currently at nearly £10,000, but as this is my own property with no mortgage and I still want to sell it when things improve this makes financial sense as well as being the right thing to do. Someone who bought a property to let with an outstanding mortgage is in a very different position. I think that low savings interest rates over many years led to many people getting into rental properties as a source of income and now that is drying up for many reasons.
