Thanks Dunc for new thread. Good luck with Uni and your DC!

cardibach · 19/09/2024 21:00

Exciting for your DD but unsettling for you @DuncinToffee
Here’s my tax. Perdy cat is unavailable for photographs, so this is Gimli the fluffy Frenchy. He was busy raising money for the Dogs’ Home at a bucket collection he took me to a couple of weeks ago. Shmoozed like a pro. He’s been adopted now, bless his heart.

It's a little tradition we have on these threads - we've been doing it for years. It isn't compulsory.

Some context from Lucy Powell on the recording of gifts

Lucy Powell, "It happens and it is acceptable.. Two issues.. Transparency and declared.. Which is what Keitr Starmer and myself have done"

Fiona Bruce, "You're second on the list with £40,000 worth of gifts.. Why?"

Lucy Powell, "The vast majority relate to me attending events as shadow culture secretary.. Official events I was attending in official capacity.. One of the quirks of our system is ministers don't have to declare them in the same way"

"The Secretary of State didn't have to declare those gifts, but as shadow secretary of state, I did"

"Which is why, on that list which is being widely shared today, there are no former conservative ministers on that list, even though they would be attending the same events"

It's not compulsory Wink.

It started way back on a different series of threads (but many of the same posters), iirc before MN had an easy way to watch or bookmark a thread. So we'd post a "place mark", which at some point autocorrected to "place mat", then "place mat king" then "place cat king". Grin

Hence the series of cat photos which have since expanded to dogs, sundry pets/birds/animals and flowers. SmileFlowers

It also serves a more serious purpose of creating a sense of community. Smile

Interesting that the shadow SoS had to declare the gifts but not the actual SoS. Lucy Frazer was at every event going so she must have racked up thousands of pounds worth of gifts that weren't declared.

Sure all within the rules and of course the Tories did worse but all this, regardless of the in's and out's, will just lead to more ridicule of politics, MPs, lower turnouts & people who do vote, turning to the extremes.

It really does need to stop, in any industry i ve worked in, gifts are highly regulated and normally cannot be accepted and i also don't get why such high value gifts are not taxed?

My PHI was, what's the difference?

I'm at a loss to be honest, i really did hope Starmer would be different but as a v cynical friend said to me before the GE "they are all the same, Starmer is just a Tory with a red tie"

At the time i disagreed strongly, now........

DuncinToffee · 19/09/2024 22:49

Seems to be the narrative that the media is trying to portray

The whole culture in Westminster regarding donations and gifts need to change

@Alexandra2001 - as Lucy Powell explains in the post you’ve quoted, many of the ‘gifts’ are things you have to take to do the job, such as tickets to an event where you are representing the parliament/your constituency. It’s a notional figure, as nobody will have paid for them in reality.

Anyone know why I can't post any photos?

Thanks for new thread Duncin- hope uni drop off goes ok.

That's really interesting interview with Lucy Powell. Sadly I think it'll fall on deaf ears. It seems these aren't all 'gifts' as such but tickets to events they need to attend so don't have monetary value attached to the receiver but they need to attend them as ministers.
Shame people won't pay attention to the fact the government in charge wouldn't have to declare for receiving the same.

Makes you wonder what will happen moving forward. Will we suddenly see the Tory's declaring loads. I'm guessing not to point prove but I doubt that means they aren't receiving anything 🤔

Can't stand the guy but fair play to Farage for declaring his massively high earnings for gb news.
