Hello all! Glad first day went well @WinterLobelia and hope DS contract comes through soonn@Peridot1 !

Today I have an appointment to move the parent association bank account over to me as I am taking over as treasurer. Must remember to send the budget round too.

And I have something to look at for a long ago client who has found a bug in what I did for her.

Yesterday we bought plants for the porch room and some tiles to turn the old fashioned free standing heater into a shelf. It's looking nice!

SpiritOfEdna · 17/09/2024 14:17

Morning - whilst talking recipes - anyone got a good soda bread recipe? I’ve been using a James Martin one but it just turns out a floury clumpy bready lump.
I am in meetings all day so limited to what I can do but will have a stab at stuff in my bedroom - am pretty skint until payday so buying stuff (underbed storage) is out till end of month
Today’s list

  • research whether I need to take off all the existing paint before I redecorate bedroom ( it’s currently got F&B paint on which has peeled off in places like a skin) or whether I can just paint over it
  • Find a restaurant for a birthday dinner
  • put all the plants back now that the ‘patio magic’ has dried
I’m posting on my phone so will quickly post and read back and see all the new posts although I see our lovely winterfrog has popped back - hello!! Have a good day, SoE
WinterLobelia · 17/09/2024 18:30

yay @WinterFrog !

Good to see you. Smile

petalpower · 17/09/2024 20:43

Ahh @WinterFrog - you’re back my sandwich sister!
Back looking after oldies again so have been AWOL from this thread. Just managed to fit in a week of horrible cold/flu bug during my two weeks away from oldie care and not much else. Hoping to get away at the weekend for a week’s UK holiday but we will see.
I read this thread every day and am amazed by what you all achieve.

Peridot1 · 18/09/2024 09:33

Welcome back @WinterFrog! Lovely to see you.

@petalpower - hi to you too! You do have a lot on your plate. Hope you get your holiday. You deserve it.

@SpiritOfEdna - Irish soda bread? Brown or white? I have a Darina Allen recipe for brown which I tried recently and it was ok. They do tend to be a big lump and not look great before they bake.

SpiritOfEdna · 18/09/2024 13:08

@Peridot1 My issue is taste rather than appearance to be fair; but thank you - just found a whole new rabbit hole of You Tube tutorlals by Darina Allen. Hope that formal offer has come in for DS
@petalpower - what a slog and while ill as well.
@WinterLobelia - new job! Hope it is going well - and if it's not it's nearly Friday 😄@Aria999 that is our new phase for the fridge, the dishwasher the washing machine...
@RunningKatie hope the window men have a clear path to your windows by now and they are mid fixing 😄
@SingleThreadJoiner I used to hate getting changed for PE - it's so good they get to go in their kit instead of changing in school.
@Ineedtokeepmoving I love a fresh new notebook
and finally @Mumtobabyhavoc - hope babyhavocs are keeping to their nap times 😄
Apologies if I've missed anyone out - as per usual I am dipping in and out of my post 😃
I found out yesterday I had a pay rise that I hadn't been expecting so that was a nice surprise!

No more interviews today, my feedback tomorrow to HR will be interesting! Friday's candidate was, shall I say, unprepared and was sitting in the car, said they had prepared but had forgotten all their thoughts/notes etc.. I need to find out if the interview was proposed as a 'getting to know you chat' rather than a formal interview. Yesterday's one was better.
Today, lighter work day, so can crack on

  • I have a small suitcase with photos/mementoes etc in, I am going to go through and chuck out a load of stuff.
  • I've got a stack of notebooks on my desk with my scrawl all over, will check if they are all 'dead' and BUY A NEW ONE :excited
  • still need to box up walking shoe to send off for resoling
  • nip to post office to pick up an undelivered parcel
  • got a bag together for swimming kit
That's all for now, have a good day, SoE
Peridot1 · 18/09/2024 13:42

@RunningKatie this is the recipe. I didn’t have fresh basil so used dried. It’s nice but I think the fresh basil would have been better.

Waitrose Food SEPTEMBER 2024

WinterFrog · 18/09/2024 17:36

Hello everyone! I figured you'd recognise the user name! I kept it seasonal with a nod to our @WinterLobelia 😁

I am less sandwichy now @petalpower as my young folk have got their acts together ( like ducks, traditionally there has always been at least one out of the four being the wrong way up) But sadly my mother isn't doing so well and is requiring significant support. I'm sorry you have your hands so full with caring responsibilities.

I will catch up fully, but great news i see for Lobelia and @Peridot1

For now a big hello to everyone and their families and i am glad you are doing well despite most of you having had the lurgy.

I have had piles of admin to deal with as I'm the one free to do it, and sitting at a desk isn't my natural habitat so that's felt a bit stressful. But the garden is looking better than ever as I've used the daily project ethos to get bits done, and using it as my down time. The house.....not so much. I lost something today and realised the lack of projecting has caused piles of clutter that are excellent places for things to hide. So I'm on it from today.
💐 💕

Mumtobabyhavoc · 18/09/2024 18:44

Solidarity to the caregivers here. I, too, had a bit of family crisis spending Sunday with my mum in emerg and dc in tow. My mum was discharged after an iv of antibiotics and an ultrasound then ct-scan to confirm diagnosis and given a surgical date (yesterday). So, got up at 5:30am, got dc up and ready and took her back to hosp yesterday morn. All went well and she was discharged home. Havoc had a fever Saturday, d&v last night and baby had a fever last night, so have tylenol at 4am and was up until 6:30. Havoc was up at 7:30. I'm a bit (more than) grumpy today. So exhausted. Have got towels/washcloths on hot going through a 2nd wash with vinegar now and have washed bathroom down. I felt like I was coming down with a cold, too, but seem to have fought it off. Need to vacuum (a daily thing lately with baby exploring food). Will wash all the clothes, too, and sheets on one of the beds I didn't get to on Sunday.

eta despite universal healthcare in crisis here we were at emerg a total of about 4 hours. I've found that urgent cases really do get prioritized and my mum, dc and me have all had excellent emerg care.

Oh my havoc what a stressy couple of days, hope your mum is on
the mend 💐

WinterFrog · 19/09/2024 06:29

Oh my goodness @Mumtobabyhavoc that does sound a lot! Best wishes to you and all your family!

I do love a new notebook @SpiritOfEdna DH uses them constantly for work scrawl. Mine contain lists and a bit of jormalling (which I need to re-start)

Off to read the soup recipes.

Today, I intend to deal with the top of the chest of drawers in my bedroom.

Peridot1 · 19/09/2024 08:45

Oh gosh @Mumtobabyhavoc that sounds stressful. Glad your mum got such good and prompt care though. We can only wish for that here!

@WinterFrog - I wish the garden bits would work as downtime for me! Good luck with the clutter piles. As the thread says one job a day!

I have done my back in so taking it easy. It’s a long term thing. I need a chiropractic appointment but mine isn’t available until 1 Oct so going to try to see someone else. And I broke a crown on a tooth on Monday. Tooth is not salvageable so needs extracting. So I have a consultation today about taking that one out and putting in an implant where I had another tooth removed a few years ago. I kept putting it off and now have buggered up the other side which is annoying. So I’ll need two implants eventually. Money money money!

Jobs wise in the house I am pottering a bit. Have various lists on the go and am ticking things off. Did the extraction fan filter yesterday and washed out the utensils jars we keep either side of the cooker. They get greasy especially when DH decides to fry some rice noodles in hot oil and they splashed everywhere!

Electricians came yesterday and that felt like a big tick for some things. Sockets installed in new units. Socket moved in utility room as a new cupboard is being built for in there. And socket moved behind DS’s bed so while his bed was being put back into position we put some stuff underneath - it’s one of those lift up storage beds. So the small spare bedroom is looking better.

I also have started sorting out a few charity bags which I hopefully will get dropped off this week.

Joiner is supposed to be coming today to finally finish units and put handles on DS’s wardrobes but I haven’t heard from him as yet. Keeping fingers crossed!

Today:

  • make chiropractor appointment
  • laundry
  • brush dog
  • make banana bread
  • tidy utility room
  • rest!

Have a good day all.

SingleThreadJoiner · 19/09/2024 13:27

Gosh I really need to stop by more regularly or the messages just whizz past!

A big big hello and great to see you again @WinterFrog , it is a delight, though sorry to hear you are still dealing with a lot.

Thank you for the soup recipe @Peridot1 it does sound very delicious!

And sorry to hear about all the pain and stress @Mumtobabyhavoc , so hard to keep eveything going in those circumstances.

It's all go go go here, and I am making peace with the fact that I can manage one very small extra task every day - but it's still something, and still something to celebrate. So in that spirit, the achievements of the week so far have been to make a meal plan and update the online shop; arrange drop-off of a pair of toddler shoes through one of the WhatsApp groups; order a new pair of leggings for school after the child ripped a big hole in them. And that is all!

Aria999 · 19/09/2024 14:25

@Mumtobabyhavoc hope your mum is recovering ok. 4 hours in ER with little ones sounds very difficult, glad it wasn't longer!

@Peridot1 sorry to hear about the back and teeth! That's a lot to deal with at once. Hope everything gets fixed.

Hi everyone!

Yesterday I finally managed to clear the piles of clutter I brought up from the cellar. (This being only Wave 1 of clutter from the cellar unfortunately), and bought a birthday present for my sister.

Today the remaining chairs for the porch should be coming. I also need to darn a sweater, tidy the games room and do next year's budget.

RunningKatie · 19/09/2024 20:41

Gosh @Mumtobabyhavoc - hope all is ok now and everyone is on the mend.
Am going to make some soups this weekend, thank you for the Waitrose recipe @Peridot1
Things here are whizzing along, windows are all fixed, work is very busy and the dc are busy too.
One more day to the weekend, it can't come soon enough.

Aria999 · 19/09/2024 21:43

Chairs put together
Sweater darned
Budget partially done

Also posted a cheque to our gardener who does not do electronic payments (or even text, not sure he has a cellphone)

WinterFrog · 20/09/2024 19:46

👋 all! Back and teeth the same week @Peridot1 ! Hope you've been able to get some appointments booked. My body has cost me quite a lot of money - a bad jaw clenching habit has seen to that: sports massage for my poor neck and shoulders, and quite a lot of dentistry ( more recently, botox in my masseter muscles which has helped everything but my credit card balance)

Well organised @Aria999! Impressed!

@RunningKatie weekend is here 🎉 Have a good one!

Thank you @SingleThreadJoiner 'And that is all' sounds quite a lot!!

WinterFrog · 20/09/2024 20:07

This week has flown by! Loving the golden weather, and the cooler nights. On Monday I made an enormous bolognaise and it's fed us for most of the week. We ate out one night, but otherwise it was bol with jacket potatoes, bol with rice, bol with pasta, and chicken salad once I think. And now there is a portion in the freezer too! It's been great barely thinking about cooking.

I did not succeed in clearing the bedroom flat surfaces. An admin challenge has caused me some anxiety, and people involved being hard to get hold of has made it harder. Which has made me worse than useless around the house. But, today I gave mum a pamper session - washed her hair, trimmed her nails and gave her a hand massage, as currently she isn't able to do these things herself.

And I have seen our littlest one, who is a ray of sunshine, and just what grandad and I needed! There is a truth in the saying about being able to give them back though.

So all in all a good day, and the housework can wait till tomorrow. Wishing all of you a good weekend 💐

Aria999 · 20/09/2024 20:32

Hello @WinterFrog ! Enormous bolognese sauce for a week is often what I do when DH is away.

I'm not sure where the days go.

Today I signed up with a new cleaning company. I'm going to try getting them to do just the bathrooms and the outdoor sitting areas monthly as a compromise. Can't really afford or (given I am often not working) justify someone to clean the whole house and even if I could, getting the whole house tidy enough at one time is really stressful.

Also tidied the kitchen (again), put our year end savings into investments and finished next year's budget, and had a FaceTime call with my dad and stepmother.

Not quite sure how 6 hours have passed though. Need to try and do something useful with the final hour. Laundry folding maybe... the gift that keeps on giving...

WinterFrog · 22/09/2024 14:17

Hello everyone! @Aria999 I can lose hours too!
Today I am making a marinade to go over white fish fillets. I was reading a thread on the very useful elderly parents forum about early signs of dementia. Only making the same meals every day was up there and so I thought oh 🤬 I'd better stop doing that 😂 But who doesn't love a good bolognaise when things get busy? I did feel a bit like Bubba Shrimp from Forrest Gump on my last post though!

I have a plan ( i think it's probably a plan I've had before....) to get rid of the odds and sods from the freezer, and use it for a bit of cook once, eat twice batch cooking. Theory being that there'll be a, say, three week rota so nothing gets freezer burn.

Today is mainly a planning day. DH fell over in the mud earlier, and now I've stopped laughing I've tucked him up in bed with a cat, a cuppa, and Sherlock Holmes read by Stephen Fry, so I trust that he will be asleep within ten minutes! And the tea will probably go cold. Which mean I have our study area all to myself so there is method in my madness.

I hope you are all having a lovely weekend xx

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/09/2024 14:29

Winter, I'm am totally off tomato sauce since pregnancy as it caused major reflux. Now, I'm sautéing veg, adding al dente pasta and a touch of pesto and feta. 🤷‍♀️

Changed a bed and washed sheets last night, wiped floor under/around bed, baseboards, heater and window sill/tracks while I had bed moved.

Just up with baby then slipping back into bed. It's chilly and still dark here at almost 6:30am.

No luck getting back to sleep as Havoc woke up...
So. Pancakes it is.

That takes me back @Mumtobabyhavoc Those pancakes look delicious!
The mornings are really pulling in now! I was up early all week and saw some spectacular sunrises while the full moon was still in the sky. Not today though. A thunderstorm and heavy rain woke me at 1am, so I got up to read for a bit, then up again at 7am. I also went outside to smell the rain in the night, and managed to flatten a snail. Poor thing, just pottering about minding its own business when it was unexpectedly trodden on 😔

The fish is marinating and my beloved is making salad and new potatoes. Very early dinner today as off to see mum. Tempted to make pancakes for breakfast tomorrow. Ate those drop scones @Mumtobabyhavoc? I hope you are all feeling better and that your mum is ok!
