Sorry to hear about your FIL @RunningKatie . That sounds tough.
Back to the laundry chat - we got a dehumidifier a few weeks ago and I think it makes a real difference when drying laundry. I’m sure it speeds the process up.

WinterFrog · 28/12/2024 08:31

Morning all! Those dehumidifiers are amazing aren't they @petalpower? I came across them a few times in my work as carer/cleaner. Fair few damp houses as well as to help with laundry. I would not be without my tumble dryer as the back garden gets very little sun in winter so nothing dries out there. I could also be tempted by a heated drying rack. Ds and his wife have one.

We have normality too round here. I've had my nose in a proper book ( with paper and everything!) because DH keeps nicking my kindle fire to play games on. He's back to work apart from new years day next week.
I feel short of vegetables but we're finishing off what's in fridge/freezer. Dh has the twitch because I won't let him go grocery shopping.I think I might make a good and hearty vegetable soup this morning with what's left ( the festive version on smug soup I suppose!)

Best wishes to all 🥂

RunningKatie · 28/12/2024 12:02

We still have fog, getting a bit boring now, a friend has gone to Northumberland and sent a photo of wide empty beaches and blue skies. I'm envious!
DH is ironing, I'm trying to make a food plan for the next few days. We have so much sugar in the house, it's way in excess of what 4 people can consume. I'm going to ask the dc to put theirs in a tin, they can have a daily treat but so the big cupboard doesn't appear on first glance to be sponsored by Cadbury's.
More washing is ready to go on, and now that dh seems better I'm going to casually mention some furniture moving!

FourSeasonsLobelia · 28/12/2024 12:35

Morning. Trying to finish off the christmas food here as well. I am heading abroad at the end of the week as a family member has taken a turn for the worse. Leaving DH and DCs here. Busily doing some batch cooking as DH's family member is on the mend- but he does not need any extra stress. I've made bolognese sauce and chicken soup so far. A carbonara next. Any ideas gratefully received as i am bit out of ideas. Smile I think I have to buy DS1 a new blazer before I go as i managed to wash his with not one but two paper napkins and one of those was red. I'll do that Monday I think.

Hope everyone is well and loved ones are all much much better. Thanks

FourSeasonsLobelia · 28/12/2024 12:37

Oh! And another NY Resolution- only post on our lovely thread and ignore all others. Much better for my blood pressure!

Hugs to all.

Peridot1 · 28/12/2024 14:41

Sorry to read about your family member @FourSeasonsLobelia. Just what you need. A chilli for batch cooking? Or a stew? Curry?

I was up bright and early as normal this morning and was just about to get going in jobs when I started a migraine. Took painkillers and went to bed hoping I could knock it on the head. Woke up after an hour and seemed better. Delivered an item of furniture that I was giving to someone. Got back and headache was much worse so back to bed I went. Woke up about an hour ago much better. No idea why I got a migraine. I get them very rarely.

Anyway. I’m off to dust and vacuum spare bedrooms and make up beds.

WinterFrog · 29/12/2024 13:17

@Peridot1 I hope you are feeling better today! Migraines are miserable.
@RunningKatie did you get the furniture moved?
Sorry about the family member @FourSeasonsLobelia 😔
I have managed to make some sense of my freezer, and two days of slightly...ahem...unusual meals got rid of bits and bobs plus i naughtily binned stuff that we just won't eat.
My resolution is to always write a shopping list and menu plan before DH goes shopping, and go back to a weekly soup/stew for leftovers.
Ive had to open windows here as my festive soup was somewhat sprout heavy 😳 And it's covered 2x lunches.

Aria999 · 30/12/2024 09:37

Hello all! lol at your Cadbury sponsored cupboard @RunningKatie !

Glad everyone has had a nice Christmas!

We had some trouble getting to Scotland, we were all set to go at 11am on 28th having stopped overnight in North Yorkshire, and then the hire car wouldn't start.

Most of the car rental branches within 50 miles or so were closing at 1pm that day (Saturday) and not opening on Sunday. They ended up recovering us 2 hours in the wrong direction to Manchester Airport by which time it was too late to continue so we got a hotel room. Lord knows what it will cost us (breakdown insurance costs extra and I never take it).

Made it up here by lunchtime the next day and are now gloomily contemplating the prospect of being snowed in and / or our flight potentially being cancelled on 1st as we try to return to London...

Off to try and pack an overnight suitcase to visit my stepdad now before returning here to my dad's on New Year's Eve.

We are going to trampoline park and crazy golf this afternoon which I hope works out as the kids have already had 2 days of promised fun cancelled (one because grandma was feeling ill so we delayed leaving England till after lunch and the second because of the car fiasco).

RunningKatie · 31/12/2024 16:41

@WinterFrog - the furniture has not been moved, dh seems to have an unshiftable migraine. Understandable given all that's happened recently but I just want to not be living in chaos and I can't shift it on my own. It'll happen, I just need to practice patience and maybe drink a large gin whilst I wait
Sorry to hear about your relative @FourSeasonsLobelia, safe travels.
The weather has gone bonkers here, so ddog and I are sitting with some rubbish tv and a blanket. Truly worse ways to spend NYE, we've got pizza and pudding for later, we're not going out kind of people so I'm hoping board games will suffice. The dc have asked to stay up till midnight, we shall see if they make it.
Happy new year all!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 31/12/2024 18:51

Lobelia, sorry about your relative. It must feel quite stressful right now. 💐

I may have to brave the grocery store or Costco today before closing. 😫

Baby's birthday was over the weekend. Got decos up Friday night and the balloons were not the best quality (Amazon) as some had holes and others slowly deflated overnight to varying degrees. Since then most were at least partially deflated by yesterday. Very frustrating, but I did get some good pics of decos and baby while I could. 😅 I try to keep decos up for the dc to enjoy for about a week and the picture wall a couple weeks longer.

Lots to do in the new year, so will need to get organized. Will likely purge baby clorhes end of January again and have already bought a bunch next size up, so I am ready. ☺️

Happy and peaceful New Year to everyone. ☺️

Happy new year to all the projecteers! We are up visiting all the oldies and rest of the family. Quiet new year with elderly parents in law but am getting stuck into the NZ Sauvignon Blanc!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/01/2025 07:36

Happy New Year, Petal and everyone on the thread. 🥳
Very low-key here and trying to stay awake another 24 mins to make it to midnight. 😂

Happy New Year! @Mumtobabyhavoc I'll see yours in with you. Smile

Hope 2025 brings all the Projecteers and loved ones great happiness, peace and loads of fun times.

FourSeasonsLobelia · 01/01/2025 08:02

Happy New Year!!!💝

FourSeasonsLobelia · 01/01/2025 08:18

I have now made 3 New Year's resolutions;

  1. Have more fun
  2. Don't waste time
  3. (Inspired by the DCs) watch 100 new films this year. We watched the Wes Anderson short film The Ratcatcher last night. Only 17 minutes long but we figured it counts. Very odd and somehow quite absorbing.

I leave tomorrow for my trip. Have a flex ticket in case I need to stay longer but will be back at the end of January I hope. So I will be doing some daily projects around my parents home- mainly cooking and helping with the garden so they can just not worry about that side of things while they do what they need to do. I have 19 meals in the freezer for the DCs all ready. DH this time is pleased to have the assistance. Last time he got annoyed as he assumed I was making some sort of comment on his cooking skills. (He was right. I was). I expect that there will be a heavy secret reliance on McDonalds but that's okay for a bit. Grin

Yesterday I loaded up my little car and did a long overdue trip to the tip. That has pleased me immensely. Mostly outside stuff i got rid of so things look better for passers by who may look over the gate. Today is printing out all tickets and checking in.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/01/2025 15:35

Lobelia, that's a long trip. I hope you're okay. 💐

Evening all! Safe travels @FourSeasonsLobelia!
Sorry to hear about the chaos @Aria999 !
Happy new year everyone 💕

Today started well. All fresh air and positivity and good humour. Now I'm grumpy and irritable with no good reason. Didn't even stay up late.
Probably, too much Christmas. So dh is cooking dinner and I'm hiding out in the bedroom. I have a book, yet still keep scrolling on MN. Idiot!
That reminds me - anyone seen A Man Named Otto with Tom Hanks in it?( Also his son Trueman) It was lovely. I laughed and cried watching it last night ( As did DH - he only ever cries at Tom Hanks films)

I think I'd like it to be next week now. Back to normality.

FourSeasonsLobelia · 01/01/2025 18:42

I cried at a Man Called Otto also @WinterFrog Smile. It was lovely. Have you seen Sully? I love that film.

I want it to be next week as well. I am tired, fed up and have to tidy for our wonderful cleaner who comes at 6.30 am on Thursdays. Ugh.

Aria999 · 01/01/2025 20:19

Happy new year all!

We made it to London despite a slightly alarming drive through very fast falling snow in the borders. Airbnb is slightly dilapidated but is situated on top of a tesco express which is very handy!

DC now fed and watching grizzly and the lemmings (or as DD would say Gwizzwy and the Wemmings).

What's the trip @FourSeasonsLobelia ? (Sorry if I missed you saying). It sounds rather epic. Hope all is ok.

I have one new year's resolution so far which is to train the DC not to leave all the cushions from the sofa on the floor any time they use the living room.....

Also will need to lose the weight put on over Christmas, I really have not been trying at all.

sortmyselfoutagain · 01/01/2025 23:44

Hello, I've joined this wee group in the past but always aim far too high and fail miserably. This year I'm taking a different approach to everything and going slow and steady so if you'll have me back I'd love to join you again! I'm also on another fab page aiming to make small changes over the year and one of my first ones is to do one job a day. 25 changes for 2025 | Mumsnet
Todays job was to set up a 2025 spending diary in excel. I've done this for years now and it's very interesting to see where my money actually goes.
I hope everyone has had a lovely new year!

25 changes for 2025 | Mumsnet

I started a thread at the start of 2024 called "one small change each week". [[https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/general_health/4974674-making-one-small-ch...

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/general_health/5239868-25-changes-for-2025?page=1

sortmyselfoutagain · 02/01/2025 11:32

Todays job was going to be taking down the christmas decs but DH did it yesterday whilst I was at work so instead todays job is to transfer everything onto my new calendar and diary and maybe even get a few things booked for this year.

FourSeasonsLobelia · 02/01/2025 11:45

Hello! Typing while waiting for a bus. Grin

@Aria999 I have a close family member in Australia who is very ill. I just need to be around to be an extra pair of hands for a bit. It's pretty stressful but reports today are that things are looking up thank heavens. DH and Dcs are staying home as Dh has an ill family member here in the UK. So all a bit fraught but we have hopefully worked out how to manage the next few weeks. I am travelling hopefully. Smile

Welcome and welcome again @sortmyselfoutagain ! It is so good to have you with us again. Smile Have you had a name change? I think I might know who you were and it is ever so lovely to see you again. Such a joy to have people join our lovely thread(s).

Hugs to all. May 2025 bring all of you and your loved ones great joy, hope, happiness and sheer unbridled fun!

Peridot1 · 02/01/2025 12:05

Happy New Year everyone.

@FourSeasonsLobelia - safe travels. You sound like you have been very organised on the food front.

I am shattered. Had my sister, BIL and their DCs here over NY which was lovely but always comes with late nights and too much wine. They left about an hour ago and I’m slowly getting the place tidied and cleaned. Although I’m not planning on doing much today really.

Welcime @sortmyselfoutagain. Or welcome back! I think sometimes we all try to do too much and find it’s not sustainable. This thread was originally about just doing one thing daily. I need to remember that myself. My lists always end up way too long.

Today’s list here is just a basic reset of the house after visitors. So I have some laundry on, some waiting to be folded and some already done and hung up. Dishwasher has been on and emptied and I’ve wiped around the kitchen counters etc. I’ll run the vacuum cleaner around shortly too and do a wash of towels from spare bedrooms. Then I’m just going to chill and read my book.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 02/01/2025 21:36

Welcome (back) @sortmyselfoutagain ☺️
My list of things to do is never-ending, but I try to find an extra thing to do to make progress. Vacuuming and wiping floors is my daily bane of existence....

Have just had two hot chocolates with whipped cream and marshmallows, but ket's call it one large hot chocolate as I'm sure that's what it would be had I bought one at a cafe. 😁😋

My extra task for today is to go to the post office. I need to mail off some things for taxes and the envelopes are quite full, so will need to be weighed for postage. This is part two of said task as I did the dreaded accounting prior to Christmas. 😵‍💫

welcome back sortmyselfoutagain - i am on the other thread too - under a name change though as I flirted with the name change and it seems to have stuck. And I work in tech 😃i am back with a vengeance today and a list.

Today:

  • need to find someone to recycle the christmas tree
  • need to find someone to fix my car
  • de-christmas-ify the house
  • need to find a man with a van to take a load of stuff to the tip who doesn't charge the earth
  • start my 2025 Finances spreadsheet
  • my desk is a distracting mess of stuff - so need to tidy it
  • walk SpiritDoggo
My extra task is to send off my driving license details as I took the fine and points rather than the speed awareness course 😃 Have a good day all, SoE
