Happy new year! I've not made resolutions this year but last year I made a list of things I wanted to do which was positive. I didn't do them all but I crossed off a fair few. So, I'm going to make a new list and try again in 2025.
The iminent snow is going to mess up our weekend, we are currently on the wrong side of the Pennines and 4 hours from home. We were going home on Sunday lunchtime, now aiming for Sat pm as we'll be driving towards the snow. DS said "so we're cutting short our holiday?", I feel guilty but I'm not taking on Mother Nature.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 03/01/2025 20:42

Katie, or stay later? Is that an option?
I was once "stranded" while on vacation due to a transportation strike. It took me a week to get things sorted to travel to another city to come home. 😉

Thank you for all the lovely welcomes! I really need to stick around this time cos I am DROWNING!! I can't keep on top of everything and want it all sorted now but I need to trust the process and keep going. Today I returned some clothes. I ended up taking 4 things back....and bought 4 other things (although I need to return 1 of them). This is just one example of the nonsensical things I do that stress me out because it's just never ending. I also emailed the ferry company that double charged me last week. Thank goodness that's done cos if I'd left it any longer I would have felt like it was too late and just wrote it off which I really can't afford to do.
I hope you manage to get home ok @RunningKatie we've got a yellow warning for snow on Sunday and I need to go to work. Driving in the snow never used to bother me but I do worry about it more now.

Peridot1 · 04/01/2025 10:32

I hope you get home safe @RunningKatie.

I think I remember you now too @sortmyselfoutagain. The ferry reminded me.

I did a few extra tasks yesterday. Sorted out my pyjama drawer. Which wouldn’t shut as was so stuffed. So that is now a bit better.

Also emptied out the drawer where I keep long sleeved tops. Also stuffed. They are currently on the chair in my bedroom so I need to sort them today.

I also took a return back. Although I didn’t buy anything instead @sortmyselfoutagain!

I have started the de-Christmas process. I have a lot of Christmas table linens some of which doesn’t work in this house so I now have some sorted to go to the charity shop. I still have way too much though! But the box now closes easier.

Today we are getting the Christmas decorations boxes down from the loft. I’m going to be quite ruthless. They should be pretty much empty as we have two trees up and various bits everywhere but they are not. So before I even start to take the decorations down I’m culling the boxes. Well the contents of the boxes!

Have a good day all.

WinterFrog · 04/01/2025 14:29

Hello again @sortmyselfoutagain You are definitely one of us!
I love the idea of the 25 things. Had a quick peep at the thread.
DH has always been of the mindset that eg improving health involves giving things up, but has finally begun to accept my way of thinking which is of adding things in. So that's the start of our new year changes 🤞
First up is remembering that he's supposed to be recording his BP twice a week, so I'm going to do it with him to build the habit.

Safe travels everyone. Love to @FourSeasonsLobelia and family with all that's going on! Safe landings!

Had four generations together this morning, visiting my mother. It was quite the party!

Today I booked a dental check up following the third text reminder and several weeks of it being on my list. Easy peasy online - got appt for Monday. Such a procrastinator! Next up is a routine vet appointment.

I have nearly persuaded DH to work in the office an extra day per week as I get so much more done when I have the house to myself. I have much more to do now as I'm freelancing a bit ( suits my butterfly personality much better than same place/time every day) DH is very willing in theory but then panics about a half hour earlier start as he really has embraced rolling out of bed and straight to his computer.
Grumpy me may have threatened to move into my mother's currently empty house a couple of days ago so I get peace and quiet 😂 But that doesn't solve the problem of getting things done round here....
I love him dearly but when I married him he worked long hours outside the house. We also have an offspring with us at the moment but fortunately she works full time elsewhere.

My empty nest feels anything but, currently!

I'm in a much less irritable mood now thankfully. Last year was full of changes and while none of us ever know what's round the corner, for now things feel more settled. I love this time of year ( yes I'm well aware I'm an oddity but I just love the clear cold sky and the bare tree silhouettes, and glorious sunrise and sunsets) Summer is just so....sticky!

Just off out in the cold now, all on my byself as littlest says. Ahhhh, bliss!

RunningKatie · 04/01/2025 20:46

We are safely home! There was a real temptation to stay on holiday but we were in the area that was due to get 40cm of snow and we also live in an amber area so it felt too risky. And the dc have to be at school on Monday so we needed to be sensible parents.
Tomorrow I'm going to de-Christmas the house and hopefully get it all stashed into the loft.
Am obviously also hoping to go sledging, but time will tell!
Hope everyone is wrapped up warm.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/01/2025 00:20

Glad you made it safely, Katie!

Did a load of laundry and hung it up and folded and put away a bunch of clothes this morning. My extra task for today was to clean the washing machine. I wiped the inner glass of the door and around the door and hinges, drained it and cleaned the filter, did a general wipe of the front and have now got it on "tub clean" mode.

OP posts:
WinterFrog · 05/01/2025 08:04

I am delighted that you are safely home @RunningKatie Your reasons for leaving early were very sound. I hope you get the chance to go sledging today!
We're just wind and rain here. No snow for us. Yellow warning which mainly means business as usual but tie down your bins. I neglected to do that last time and ended up retrieving the contents of our recycling bin from my neighbours' gardens in the rain!

I hope you are tucked up in bed now, @Mumtobabyhavoc looking at the time difference. Good prompt about cleaning the washing machine. I'll do mine today.

Yesterday DH took care of food and laundry, and ran the vacuum cleaner round after I got it out then got sidetracked 🙈 But it freed me up (and poked my conscience) to do some extra little jobs like wiping banister rails, wiping down doors and paintwork, dusting/polishing some bits of furniture etc.

I've just written a bit of a stream of consciousness about my mother's laundry, but i deleted it and spared you all! The short version is that I have several jumpers drying on an airer.

Best wishes for those going back to school/ work tomorrow.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/01/2025 08:23

Still awake here 🐸
Sounds like you had a goot puttering session getting all those extras done! ☺️
Had a very late dinner after being out for the evening taking dc for a wander looking at Christmas lights in Stanley Park one last time. It was chilly and raining and not busy at all (little wonder!).
I found a small button in the washing machine filter. No idea what it belongs to, so into the garbage it went. I still have a wall to paint, some doorframes to fix with spackle and I should touch up scuffs as well, so hopefully I'll be posting progress reports here. Once all the painting is done I can get serious about the horror bedroom because that's where I'm keeping all the painting supplies.
I've got a baby asleep on my lap... I should get to bed. 🥱

Sweet dreams @Mumtobabyhavoc 😴

Peridot1 · 05/01/2025 08:29

Glad you got home ok@RunningKatie. Definitely the right decision.

Good tip about cleaning the washing machine @Mumtobabyhavoc. I’ll put it on the list for this week.

I started the de-Christmas process here yesterday. We got the boxes down from the loft and I started going through things. Wanted a last day with everything still Christmassy so haven’t taken anything down yet. So aiming to do it all today. I suspect the place will be a bit of a mess for a while as I really want to take my time sorting it all.

Have a good Sunday all.

Peridot1 · 05/01/2025 08:30

Sleep well @Mumtobabyhavoc.

petalpower · 05/01/2025 10:36

A tiny sprinkling of snow here but it’s raining so will soon disappear. I should have been going for Sunday lunch at DH’s extended family but have a horrible cold so have stayed at home to protect everyone from my germs. DD is at work so it’s just me and the dogs at home. Going to light the log burner and have a quiet day I think. All the Christmas decorations are still up but DH insists on them staying until 6th so I can legitimately just ignore them until tomorrow. It always looks so bare when they are taken down.
Have a good day everyone and stay warm!

WinterFrog · 06/01/2025 05:46

I had a little look at Stanley Park just now @Mumtobabyhavoc Looks very beautiful! I learn something new every day here on MN 💕 Though like @FourSeasonsLobelia I try to stick to reading threads that don't raise my blood pressure)

I hope you are feeling better today @petalpower A quiet afternoon in was probably just what you needed.

👋 everyone else!

I gave up trying to sleep at 5.15am. Downstairs under a duvet with a cat and a notebook. It's wild outside! Going to finish my book then go and have a look at the 25 for 25 project thread I think. I hope the transition out of the official festive period goes smoothly for you all ☕ 🍪

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/01/2025 06:58

It's a must for visitors Froggie.
Curled up under a duvet here, too. I'm about to go to sleep, though if baby will let me (and I can tear myself away from a thread about Americanisms that annoy Brits!) 😁
I noticed fog has descended here this evening.

WinterFrog · 06/01/2025 07:09

@Mumtobabyhavoc i hope baby lets you sleep!
My father lived in Canada during WW2 but I've never been. It does look beautiful. I only remember learning about the great lakes at school.
As I'm among friends I will admit that my geography is weak and so I found myself reading about the difference between the Americas as a continent, and the countries within. I'm not even going to admit my lack of understanding around Alaska and why it is a US state. Do I admit that Wikipedia said your park is in North America and my thoughts went to, oh I thought Mum lived in Canada. No, I don't think I will 🙈 Oh well, we can't always know everything about everything!
😳

Remember the acronym, HOMES, for the Great Lakes: Heron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior.
The Russian Empire sold the territory Russian-America, now Alaska, to the States because of a rivalry with GB. Canada wasn't established yet.
Saying Stanley Park is in North America is a little broad, isn't it? 😂
Where abouts did your father live, Froggy? You really should visit!
ETA: was he one of the children sent to Canada for safety?

OP posts:
WinterFrog · 06/01/2025 07:41

I know that now @Mumtobabyhavoc 😂 It's just taken me googling your park then falling down a rabbit hole of states and politics! Only 40 years after I left school 🙊
I do like your acronym though!
Yes, he was! His father was stationed out there ( and died, sadly) and I'm still trying to get to the bottom of why ( family never been very forthcoming) My mother was evacuated in England.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/01/2025 07:50

Froggie, have you tried accessing the military records?
Ancestry dot com has everything now. However, here, anyway, we can get a certain amount of military records easily from the gov't. I found a great uncle that way. Just a thought. 🙂

WinterFrog · 06/01/2025 07:59

Thank you. I have actually, just recently. I know more about my grandfather than I do about my father, which is quite odd really. My grandfather was brought back and I know know he's buried not far from here. My family are really not very communicative ( I am the outlier!) Interesting that you found a great uncle 😊

SpiritOfEdna · 06/01/2025 11:04

Morning, back to work today (I was in a couple of days last week but not much done at all!)

  • bathroom sink is blocked so need to sort that out - DONE
  • move bikes out of the snow - their covers are rubbish but can't move to an undercover bit because access is blocked by old DOORS 😄
  • put a load of washing on - DONE
  • I really need to find someone to fix my car - I need to be out and about this week. So am now booked in - if I wanted a courtesy car I would have had to wait till March!!! As it is, it is booked in on 20 Jan - I might find someone who can do it a bit closer. It is going to be a spendy month on taxis
  • did a kitchen deep clean yesterday, but didn't empty the cupboards and tidy them so that is the job for today.
  • I need to wrestle the christmas tree to the front for pick up for recycling Wednesday
  • Emailed a man with a van to dispose of the old doors
That is not loads (I don't want to mention my desk AGAIN 😄), have a good day all, SoE
Aria999 · 06/01/2025 14:02

@SpiritOfEdna normally I rent a car for a couple of days if there's an extended repair needed on ours.

Peridot1 · 06/01/2025 14:40

Hello all

In midst of de-Christmasing the house. So that is main task for today. Both trees are now down and packed away in the garage. I’m not stressing too much about the state of the rest of the place just yet. Suffice to say it’s a bit of a mess.

I did a load of washing and cleaned the sink in my bathroom and have unloaded and reloaded and unloaded the dishwasher.

I also need to book some flights in Australia. An unexpected side trip from Sydney to Melbourne. Which will be lovely but I could really do without.

Not sure how much will be achieved tomorrow. I have a PT session at 8 and then another implant surgery at the dentist in the afternoon. Another week of soups, smoothies and ice cream ahead.

SpiritOfEdna · 06/01/2025 16:32

@Aria999 I did hire a car over Christmas for a week, I've been able to manage when I could drive somewhere, one of us could shop and the other stay with the car, but it was getting a bit spendy. I found a company who could come out today to do an assessment and quoted - car is getting fixed Wednesday.- its expensive, but I need my car.

FourSeasonsLobelia · 06/01/2025 16:57

Hi all- just popping in to say hi. Travelled well and am now developing a bit of a routine of shopping, cooking, accompanying to medical appointments. So not alot to report at this end!

Glad you have been able to speed up the car situation @SpiritOfEdna .

So interesting about your dad @WinterFrog ! I am a bit of a history enthusiast but the discussion you and @Mumtobabyhavoc had made me realise i know next to nothing about Canadian history. I shall change that so look forward to learning more!

Thanks to you all. Hope everyone is fine and well and loved ones healthy and happy.
