I've just seen Biden introduce president Zelensky as President Putin....its just beyond sad now, surely this has to be a big sway to stepping down?

I'm afraid I have limited sympathy for Biden at this point and none for the people around him who are enabling this nonsense. This isn't the Chair of a family business hanging on to their position longer than they should but arguably the most powerful person on Earth, who is elected to serve the people.

Everyone complicit in this should hang their heads in shame, because the way things are going, they may as well hand the keys to the White House over to the narcissist Putin fan and felon Trump now and that will affect all of us.

This ^ I think Jill Biden needs to talk some sense into him and tell him to step aside for someone else to step in but I suspect she rather enjoys being First Lady so us happy for this facade to carry on for as long as possible. It’s selfish.

I’ve not followed the other incidents closely but that particular one struck me as someone making an accidental slip for a related word, not particularly evident of old age dementia or similar.

I agree. I mean I do think he should have retired some time ago but he did speak for an hour with no autocue which is impressive for anyone IMO. Also Biden is famous for his gaffes and always has been even when a much younger man.

Thepartnersdesk · 12/07/2024 10:14

They need to introduce an upper age limit. Would sort the Trump problem too.

Realistically many people deteriorate in mental speed if not capacity certainly from late 70s. Maybe not everyone but expecting to serve a term into your 80s given the costs of elections can't be sensible.

may as well just chuck hulk hogan in there seeing as the country appears to be rapidly descending into an idiocracy

What about Chumlee from Pawn Stars?

GingerPirate · 12/07/2024 10:21

At least this person's confusion, stubbornness, insistence and anger will make it happen for Trump.

HRTQueen · 12/07/2024 10:22

What do people expect Starmer to say

he isn’t going to say well actually it’s concerning and I felt very sorry for him or he needs to step down

it’s not his place to be doing this Starmer understands the importance of diplomacy someone like Trump doesn’t

nauticant · 12/07/2024 10:25

I'm not any kind of Starmer fan but his comments on Biden are exactly what I'd expect of the PM in the circumstances.

Sakura7 · 12/07/2024 10:27

dottiehens · 12/07/2024 09:55

Starmer is not looking well sidling with Biden. You do not need his opinion anyway the evidence is there for all to see.

This nonsense again 🙄

There is nothing else he could have said. It's called diplomacy.

Tgjjl · 12/07/2024 10:33

VJBR · 12/07/2024 09:52

According to Starmer, who met him yesterday, he was very much on the ball. Hard to know who to believe.

Not Starmer, evidently.

He could have given a politician answer - avoid the question and say something related. Biden was welcoming. We had a good meeting. Whatever. But not that Biden is on the ball.

DizzyBumble · 12/07/2024 10:35

it is sad, he also called his Vice President Trump at the same speech

TallulahBetty · 12/07/2024 10:37

I ask this on all of these threads - why on earth can't the US find anyone under the age of 70 to be a president?!

Topseyt123 · 12/07/2024 10:38

I agree with you, OP. I have nothing personal against Biden but he is no longer a good candidate for the presidency. His speeches are bumbling and he clearly struggles there. He should step aside or be made to.

If the Democrats keep him as their candidate then I fear they are in danger of handing victory to Trump on a plate. Of course, Trump might possibly win anyway but there's surely no need to make it any easier for him than necessary. Some other Democrat as a candidate could possibly give him a much stronger run for his money than the now bumbling Biden. At present almost all Trump has to do is sit back and watch this unfold.

Perhaps part of the problem is that Biden himself is stubborn about it and wants to remain?

Something needs to be done, although I don't think the American system of candidate selection lends itself very well to much flexibility.

I agree that it is sad (and embarrassing) to see. Surely from that whole, vast country it is hard to believe that these two (both Biden and Trump) are the best they can come up with!! There must be others. There just must.

Mukirinessly · 12/07/2024 09:44

I’ve just watched him. Poor bloke isn’t well. Someone needs to step in and sort the situation, not just to protect us all from Trump but for Biden himself. He’s slurring his words as well as being confused.

The population count, power and money this country is supposed to have and these two are the best they could come up with?

I can’t believe with the eyes of the world watching that they were happy to continue this farce

I’ve just seen your post and have inadvertently echoed it - I whole heartedly agree

AtomicBlondeRose · 12/07/2024 10:51

Did anyone else get Fawlty Towers vibes from Biden's gaffe - "I mentioned Putin once but I think I got away with it..." 😀

And of course Starmer's not going to cause a major international diplomatic incident in his first week in office. Behave.

TinySmol · 12/07/2024 11:13

He should stand down.
If he doesn't, Trump will win and he'll nuke us all.

Fernhurst · 12/07/2024 11:33

Does Hillary Clinton not want to try for president again? Or is she not allowed to or something?

Well, she lost to Trump last time so not likely to be the top pick for the Democrats.

He repeatedly tried to give a politicians answer and they wouldn't let it drop.

Kamala wears better suits (I jest)

I hope if Kamala does get the opportunity (as she is doing the 'heavy lifting') that the US have learned to control the amount of external misinformation targeted at voters. Would Hilary have won if outside influences didn't occur? I'm unsure, but I hope Kamala is given the opportunity. Young voters and those that typically don't turn out to vote -could make such a difference given that 14.5 percent of non-voters said that they did not like the candidates or campaign issues, and therefore did not vote in 2020.

Its not just external misinformation though. If it was just lies coming from Russia/Trumps campaign it would be easier to counter. The problem is that (partly through fear of Trump etc) the Democratic campaign has tied itself to lies and misinformation as well. Most obviously in the desperately pretending Biden is fine when he isn't. Its hard to walk back from that without it being really obvious they were being untruthful and Kamala Harris is tainted by that.

I know people go on about trans issues on mumsnet a lot, and it probably isn't the most important aspect of the US election. But its another example of where (some) people clearly don't believe the transwomen are women line but are having to parrot it for the good of party unity and therefore "the country" because the cost of breaking that unity is Trump. There are loads of other examples. Basically it was decided quite early on that the best way to counter "misinformation" was to rigidly control the narrative even when that meant churning out their own misinformation.

And now it looks like the cost of all that "keeping unity at all costs" and "for the greater good" is everything falling apart at the last minute and handing the election to Trump. Which sucks for America but also, really sucks for the rest of the world and I feel quite resentful about it.

Does Hillary Clinton not want to try for president again? Or is she not allowed to or something?

Also well into her seventies and would be over 80 at the end of the term if elected.

Are there no competent politicians under the age of 70 in the USA any more?

Mukirinessly · 12/07/2024 11:46

Starmer is misguided in what he said about Biden. We can all see very clearly what state Biden is in.

GreenShady · 12/07/2024 11:48

What has Michelle Obama said about running? She would be amazing. Not for this time obviously.

haveatye · 12/07/2024 11:49

I'm hoping this is all a devious plan. It starves trump of attention. Then democrats replace biden with energetic and competent young thing who blasts trump out of the water.

How the fuck they've come up with these two as the best they have, it beggars belief.

I'd still have biden over trump any day. I bet biden has knowledge and judgment trump could only dream of. But would I want him at the helm in a complex emergency where he needs to focus for days on end without much sleep? Nope.
