Should I believe colleague that flight from Jamaica is delayed?

One of my colleagues was due back from Jamaica on Thursday (11th) and has sent a message to say she will be back early next week as the flights have been messed around because of Hurricane Beryl. I can't find anything online about this, and don't know if she's just decided to stay out longer and leave the rest of us to pick up the pieces or if it's genuine. Does anyone have any information?

Does it really matter if she takes an extra two days annual leave?

FrothyCothy · 08/07/2024 21:43

Did you miss that it destroyed 95% of homes on St Vincent and the Grenadines before hitting Jamaica?

surely it’s easy enough to check if the flight has been cancelled though?

LibertyDuck · 08/07/2024 21:44

Yeah, I'd probably give her the benefit of the doubt on this one. If it's a strong enough hurricane to kill people, pretty sure it will have affected flights!

Why would you doubt her?

Loads of flights were messed around because of it.

78Summer · 08/07/2024 21:45

Trust until you have reason to distrust.

LibertyDuck · 08/07/2024 21:46

Also pretty unlikely she would have chosen to stay out longer as changing a return flight at the last minute would be very expensive!

SeaToSki · 08/07/2024 21:47

I would want to know the flight number..the airport seems to be running OK right now

howlsmovingbouncycastle · 08/07/2024 21:48

Sorry, you couldn't find anything out about Hurricane Beryl online????!!!

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 08/07/2024 21:48

I have family there and, on the basis that the airports were closed for some time, it stands to reason that there is a knock on effect.
My in-laws were flying for a funeral and that was postponed and they had to wait until the airline could offer an alternate flight.

Summerflames · 08/07/2024 21:49

My cousin was due to fly to Jamaica on Saturday. The airport is closed for the tike being. Look at the damage online that the hurricane did. The carribean has been badly damaged. The roofs flying off the houses looked aircraft in the sky.

Procrastinates · 08/07/2024 21:49

So you think she's lying and would rather spend two extra days in a place which is quite literally being battered.

Seriously. Hmm

Yes

I would be inclined to believe her. I can’t see many people making it up.

No I didn't miss that - did you miss that I was asking about flights from Jamaica?

This. Most of the country was without electricity for quite a while after Beryl hit and there was widespread damage. My DP is Jamaican (but lives in the UK) and his dad in Jamaica only got electricity back on Saturday.

I think you're right, but I can't see anything - I've been on the live departures board from Kingston for example, and everything seems to be running on time.

Airport is closed, or was at least on the weekend

Loads about Hurricane Beryl, nothing about flights from Jamaica being delayed.

YABU

FrothyCothy · 08/07/2024 21:52

Well it didn’t weaken from a cat 5 to a mild breeze as it worked its way across the Caribbean…

If you genuinely think she’s taking the piss then surely you just tell your manager and leave it to them to investigate?

Luxell934 · 08/07/2024 21:52

Are you her boss?

I fucking hope not. If she is then Christ the poor women should be looking for a new job ASAP who'd want to work in such a toxic environment.
