Should I believe colleague that flight from Jamaica is delayed?

LivingOnAnIsland · 08/07/2024 21:40

One of my colleagues was due back from Jamaica on Thursday (11th) and has sent a message to say she will be back early next week as the flights have been messed around because of Hurricane Beryl. I can't find anything online about this, and don't know if she's just decided to stay out longer and leave the rest of us to pick up the pieces or if it's genuine. Does anyone have any information?

Another question: is your colleague Jamaican? Or of Jamaican heritage?
By any chance?

Exactly what I was wondering. I wonder why she doubts this colleague so much….reeks of a certain something in here…

jazzyBBBB · 08/07/2024 22:42

The damage and coverage has been massively under reported over here. I'm on a lot of Caribbean Facebook groups and it is truly awful.
BA are in a right mess with it and not accepting phone calls unless you are affected. Not too hard to imagine all airlines may be affected.

Is that enough for you, OP?

Maybe grow up and find something more useful/positive to concern yourself with.

OP you sound like my ex boss. Got suspicious when i told her I couldn’t come in due to being positive with covid (rules stipulated this at the time). Asked all my colleagues if they thought it was true etc. Who destroyed your faith in humanity?

I'd hate to be a person who thinks like you OP - this is bordering on stalking 🤔

I think it's tipped over

It's a Martha moment

If only it had been a tornado and then she could have been swept up and magically transported back to her desk.
Is there a reason for not treating your colleague with compassion and respect? Presumably she has either gone to Jamaica on a holiday which has not turned out to be the relaxing break they had hoped for or she is visiting family who have quite probably had their homes destroyed or their lives turned upside down.
20 years ago, I started a new job two days late due to a weather occurrence meaning that I got stranded in South America for four days. The stress among all of the chaos and having had very little sleep of trying to find some way of contacting my future boss and explaining that I was stuck and the relief of her very friendly message telling me that all that mattered was that I was safe and well and to turn up when I could was huge at the time but, having read this, is even more so.

suki1964 · 08/07/2024 22:51

Its really sad that someone is posting this about a colleague

I work with a varied bunch of people, I know that someone managed to get holiday at the time when holidays are not permitted in work by claiming " only time he could afford the flights to visit family " yet its a well known high cost time. Is it any of my business? Not at all. I just laughed and said good one. Hes also managed to book another 2 weeks during our "only extreme emergency " booking times. Good luck to him. Ive also nabbed a week, family coming over from Australia . My work time is going to be effected by him being off, same as his is whilst Im off - its called rubbing along and working with each other

Id hate to be working in a place where clock watching and worrying about someone getting "away with" something got you so miffed you post on a forum to get your views validated

spikeandbuffy · 08/07/2024 22:52

@HappierTimesAhead nope but I believe HR had a word
I left not long after as it was the final straw

RisingSunn · 08/07/2024 22:53

OP this is a disgraceful post. Your colleague was in a country affected by a hurricane. You have no concern - all you care about is snooping on them.

I can’t imagine how toxic your work environment must be.

Really left a bad taste in my mouth.

NotSoHotMess24 · 08/07/2024 22:55

spikeandbuffy · 08/07/2024 22:16

I got dragged into a disciplinary for that
Flights delayed, was a nightmare, slept in the airport etc etc
Came home to a very unhappy manager and called into a meeting
My friend in Ireland sent me a copy of the local paper, on which was a photo of me and my friend and the headline "storm causes travel chaos" and a little interview
Never slapped a paper on someone's desk so fast

Hope you also looked for a better job!! The cheek of your manager! 😶

BodyKeepingScore · 08/07/2024 22:56

Longma · 08/07/2024 22:34

Take a look on flightradar24.
You can look at specific airports and down to specific flights, including past flights. It tells you if flights were cancelled, delayed or,when they left.

Imagine stopping to this level to snoop on a colleague…

Ponderingwindow · 08/07/2024 23:00

Have you never had a flight cancelled, possibly for no obvious reason? Never been told that the best the airline could possibly do is get you home 3 or 4 days later, even if they put you on another airline? Never creatively rerouted yourself home through multiple cities because that just wouldn’t work, but you knew you had a friend or family member who would put you up for a night so you could get home in 2 days instead?

maybe I’ve just been burned too many times, but I’m pleasantly surprised if I land within 12 hours my original arrival time on any flight, even the short haul ones. Flying is nothing but an endless set of delays for weather, mechanical issues, and crew time-outs. I pack my carryon like I am going on an excursion into the wilderness.

Ihopeithinkiknow · 08/07/2024 23:04

What would you do if you found out she was lying anyway (which she obviously isn't considering what has just happened over there) I can imagine you stood there with your hands on your hips ready to give her what for lol can't be doing with people like you

Debbiejv · 08/07/2024 23:04

What a great boss posting this outing shit on here.

Animatic · 08/07/2024 23:04

In case you are struggling with spelling "Jamaica , storm, flight delays" correctly, you are welcome to copy-paste to google from here and press search.

Reddog1 · 08/07/2024 23:06

She’s lying. Set up camp on the pavement outside her house immediately. Question her neighbours. When she inevitably returns on Thursday, give her what for.

SwanRivers · 08/07/2024 23:06

This is really NOT healthy behaviour OP.

Most work colleagues: "Ahh Barbara's flight's been delayed".

OP: "Right, I'm getting on the live departures board from Kingston to check out her story right now!! And if that doesn't work, I'll start a thread on a public forum!!"

Toxic really.

She's not even her boss! 😳

momager1 · 08/07/2024 23:08

I live here in the islands. Before we made the final move we always had 3 extra days on the return booked off (easy to say for us.. I owned my restaurant and my husband had so many years in at his job that he had tons of holiday time) I normally went right back to work but at least I was not on schedule just in case. A storm can whip up within a few days here, and beryl was one of the earliest storms ever, and he moved FAST. No one could have predicted this beast. They are predicting a very intense year down here hurricane wise. Those of us that live here are safe in that we have concrete homes and everyone has at least one room in home with no windows..For guests vacationing on our islands.. they will be well taken care of if the worst happens, but may be late to work. Hopefully the people that they work with are not as cynical as the OP.

Codlingmoths · 08/07/2024 23:09

LivingOnAnIsland · 08/07/2024 22:11

That's helpful, thank you

Why didn’t you think of this? A few cancelled flights takes a while to get through finding spots for people. The sensible answer people think this should have been obvious.

Flossflower · 08/07/2024 23:12

LibertyDuck · 08/07/2024 21:46

Also pretty unlikely she would have chosen to stay out longer as changing a return flight at the last minute would be very expensive!

Unless she had already booked the later flight before she went and was going to come up with an excuse anyway!

If you are going to be doubting people and trying to catch them out you really should brush up on your googling skills. They must be pretty shit if you couldn't work this on out.

Flossflower · 08/07/2024 23:12

that one is easy to prove. All she would need is her original booking proof. Sorry . Beryl came at us very fast. This is very early for a hurricane and we have issues with saraha dust and wind shear right now. |So it made beryl into a bad boy really really fast. Normally we have at least a week to ten days when a storm forms before it comes near. We had 4 days this time from a little x on the map to a major cat 5, thank god we only got tropical storm winds and rain, but we were lucky. This time.

To be fair OP, those you dub 'idiots' have given you an idea of the reception you would have got had you gone into work tomorrow hinting or alleging, so have saved you, really.
