Should I believe colleague that flight from Jamaica is delayed?

One of my colleagues was due back from Jamaica on Thursday (11th) and has sent a message to say she will be back early next week as the flights have been messed around because of Hurricane Beryl. I can't find anything online about this, and don't know if she's just decided to stay out longer and leave the rest of us to pick up the pieces or if it's genuine. Does anyone have any information?

That's helpful, thank you - it seems to be mostly about whether it's safe to travel there, not back, but it does say that the airports on Jamaica were closed. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt!

Well, aren't you a treat!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 08/07/2024 22:08

If she is lying to get a few more days off I think I can get the reason why…

Possibly something to do with her colleague?

Howdidtheydothat · 08/07/2024 22:08

Oh my OP, Oh my. Hope
your employee finds somewhere else to work. Unless she has history, you are out-of-order. She has even given you as much notice as possible. Just dock 2 days leave or 2 days pay. Job done. No drama needed.

I once had a flight from Tanzania that had to do an emergency landing due to engine failure in Narobi. We had to wait a week before they could fly us back, as they waited for spare parts to be flown in before mending it 😬! So I think if she is only delayed by 2 days because of a hurricane that is good going!

GardenGnomad · 08/07/2024 22:09

They've been without power there for a few days too I'm sure she's not living it up. Jamaica has suffered!
So I would give the benefit of the doubt!

JLou08 · 08/07/2024 22:10

Why would anyone even question what's going on with their colleague? Searching the Internet and starting a mumsnet feed to try and prove her a liar is very odd.

SilverDoe · 08/07/2024 22:10

The first article one comes across clear says that all 3 major airports in Jamaica are closed until at least July 10th

The storm has proved highly destructive so far, with winds of up to 155 mph recorded on Grenada. On Tuesday, Jamaica was declared a ‘disaster zone’ and will remain so for until July 10.
Multiple airports in the region have closed, including all three of Jamaica’s major airports. It’s best to contact your travel provider if you have a trip booked to the Caribbean.

HcbSS · 08/07/2024 22:10

Colleague should stay out there! What a toxic work environment she is coming back to, with OP tracking her moves and seeing if she can catch her out and get her into trouble rather than focusing on her own work.

LivingOnAnIsland · 08/07/2024 22:11

Britsfivk · 08/07/2024 21:54

They closed the airport which means they then have to rebook everyone. It can easily take up to a week to clear everyone out.

That's helpful, thank you

This is a very poor judgement and attitude from you btw, @LivingOnAnIsland

Pleasegodgotosleep · 08/07/2024 22:12

Are you her line manager? If not why's it any of your business? Unless you can't start your planned leave until she gets back?

Pandrea1 · 08/07/2024 22:13

I know a family in Jamaica who were due back in USA last Thursday and their flight was deferred to today. They were told last week that while the airport would open earlier it would take some time to work through the backlog. Having said that wouldn't she just be required to take no pay or some other leave.

I'm sure she'll be sooo grateful, how generous of you 😂

spikeandbuffy · 08/07/2024 22:16

I got dragged into a disciplinary for that
Flights delayed, was a nightmare, slept in the airport etc etc
Came home to a very unhappy manager and called into a meeting
My friend in Ireland sent me a copy of the local paper, on which was a photo of me and my friend and the headline "storm causes travel chaos" and a little interview
Never slapped a paper on someone's desk so fast

I can't believe you were so mistrustful that you posted on here.

A hurricane has just hit the country, and it's 2 days. Even if she hasn't been directly affected, she might well know someone who has and have valid reasons for wanting to stay out there.

I'm glad you're not my manager to be honest. My manager would just believe me no questions asked over something like this - and there's a reason that nearly everyone in her team has been there 10+ years.

Give your staff a bit of trust.

CatchHimDerry · 08/07/2024 22:17

Many people’s lives in chaos and disarray, injuries even death… but no, must create thread and stalk internet about person who is safe and well, luckily, nabbing extra leave

HappierTimesAhead · 08/07/2024 22:17

What do we think the chances are of OP's colleague reading this thread and immediately identifying it's about her since I imagine the OP is quite a 'difficult character' to work with?

Fucking hell. I’m glad you’re not my colleague. Are you her boss? You sound very toxic to work with

Did your manager apologise?

Username197 · 08/07/2024 22:18

Wow. Just when I thought I’d seen stupidity at its finest.

There is a natural disaster, lives have been lost, there’s horrendous amounts of damage and your biggest priority is somebody not returning safely to work on time?

Are you okay OP? I would seek some help for yourself in this situation. It is not normal to be so self-centred and selfish.

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 08/07/2024 22:20

LivingOnAnIsland · 08/07/2024 21:51

I think you're right, but I can't see anything - I've been on the live departures board from Kingston for example, and everything seems to be running on time.

And it honestly didn't occur to you that previous days loss of power, massive disruption, wouldn't cause a huge backlog of passengers waiting for a place on those punctual departures?

Plenty of PP telling you about the disruption.

HolyPeaches · 08/07/2024 22:21

@LivingOnAnIsland Why are you ignoring the questions of “are you her boss/manager”?

If you aren’t, and she is just a colleague to you, then you are being incredibly unreasonable.

MumblesParty · 08/07/2024 22:23

TheRozzers · 08/07/2024 21:43

Does it really matter if she takes an extra two days annual leave?

Do you work?
