Should I believe colleague that flight from Jamaica is delayed?

LivingOnAnIsland · 08/07/2024 21:40

One of my colleagues was due back from Jamaica on Thursday (11th) and has sent a message to say she will be back early next week as the flights have been messed around because of Hurricane Beryl. I can't find anything online about this, and don't know if she's just decided to stay out longer and leave the rest of us to pick up the pieces or if it's genuine. Does anyone have any information?

OP posts:

I pity the person who op is talking about. What an awful attitude op has. I actually feel embarrassed for them. And they can't see how they are unreasonable. I really hope the person in Jamaica sees this! Totally unprofessional

LaDamaDeElche · 09/07/2024 18:55

You say colleague - are you her line manger/HR or something like that? If you are just someone who works with her then it’s very odd that you’re going to such lengths to catch her out in a lie, unless this is your job or you’ve been tasked to do this.

Ilikeadrink14 · 09/07/2024 18:59

Lndnmummy · 09/07/2024 18:01

Yes quite. And as usual @MNHQ allow that to stand while deleting @AgnesChadwick comment for calling out potentially racist behaviour.

As always. Nothing new here.

Edited

It doesn’t take long for a sensible post to degenerate into vitriol! Why don’t people grow up and be less quick to jump down people’s throats? It makes me sick just how often that happens on here!

I so agree! OP sounds a really unpleasant person.

Yes, she’s lying.

The airports are fine, the storm is a hologram.

😂

BooBooDoodle · 09/07/2024 19:23

I can’t see anyone using this an excuse to buy themselves a few days. They would be incredibly insensitive and cruel given the devastation. I don’t know why you need the validation from a forum either. It’s really none of your business and makes you sounds very petty considering what has happened. You need to grow up.

summerholidayszy · 09/07/2024 19:54

wow. now, all of you who insist there is no racism (or prejudice) in UK, look at this right here, in black and white.

doubt a thread would be created if there was a widely publicised, deadly hurricane in NYC or Canada.

Jamaica? off to mn to start a thread!!

Yes- there was a hurricane and hundreds of flights a day have been disrupted. 2.7 million in the US state of Texas are without electrical power.
I think your research skills are lacking if you could not find anything about this online. If your job has any research component your employer might need to replace you.

pleasehelpwi3 · 09/07/2024 20:50

One of my colleagues routinely doesn't come back from her home country and gets away with it. I can't say it bothers me too much but I guess it should.

You must of not have tried very hard it's been all over the news. You're really showing your ignorance and discrimination. You sound awful.

LivingOnAnIsland · 08/07/2024 21:55

That's helpful, thank you - it seems to be mostly about whether it's safe to travel there, not back, but it does say that the airports on Jamaica were closed. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt!

This reeks of racial undertones

howlsmovingbouncycastle · 08/07/2024 21:48

Sorry, you couldn't find anything out about Hurricane Beryl online????!!!

I think she means the flight departures…

OP if it’s a colleague and not an employee I’m not sure why it’s any of your business. You could check airport arrivals if you’re that fussed.

moomoo1967 · 10/07/2024 07:52

I'm SO glad I don't work with such a mistrusting colleague

moomoo1967 · 10/07/2024 07:55

To add -I've got relatives out in JA so know the horrific damage that has been caused

Santina · 10/07/2024 08:42

I would believe it after a hurricane. We had someone who 'missed' their flight out of Nigeria, and couldn't get another for a week. She had already been there for two weeks, visiting family. No one believed her.

Donsyb · 10/07/2024 08:44

Ponderingwindow · 08/07/2024 23:00

Have you never had a flight cancelled, possibly for no obvious reason? Never been told that the best the airline could possibly do is get you home 3 or 4 days later, even if they put you on another airline? Never creatively rerouted yourself home through multiple cities because that just wouldn’t work, but you knew you had a friend or family member who would put you up for a night so you could get home in 2 days instead?

maybe I’ve just been burned too many times, but I’m pleasantly surprised if I land within 12 hours my original arrival time on any flight, even the short haul ones. Flying is nothing but an endless set of delays for weather, mechanical issues, and crew time-outs. I pack my carryon like I am going on an excursion into the wilderness.

Twice last year I got the maximum compensation because my long haul flight was cancelled or delayed - and that was without a hurricane! Luckily I didn’t have to go straight back to work in my return so it was ok.

Glittabug · 10/07/2024 09:21

Your colleague needs to find new employment. You seem to be a piece of work.

You sound like an idiot they literally just had a hurricane. Stop studying your colleagues private life so hard and find a hobby

Dogsbreath7 · 10/07/2024 10:08

Think I am with the ‘idiotic’ majority here- you must be a pretty sh*ty ‘colleague’. Not only suspicious but posting on mumsnet for what is a pretty self evident response ie Hurricanes=deaths=delays. It’s the 21st century- use that thing called the worldwideweb, watch the news.

A true human being, never mind a colleague would be grateful they were unharmed and alive and offering if there was anything they needed help with.

You are NOT her line manager/boss!

Livelovebehappy · 10/07/2024 10:28

AgnesChadwick · 09/07/2024 18:09

Aye, been here before....haven't I @MNHQ?
I can't ask if someone is a racist yet I can be called a dick.

Your post was very vitriolic towards OP who had not described or referenced a racist incident. You not only called her a racist, but used expletives when doing so. It was full of hatred, and totally unnecessary. OP hasn’t been back on the post (wonder why?!) I honestly think some people patrol MN for key words, then jump alll over them. If racism occurs and is blatant on a post, then by all means call it out. But OP has not remotely implied any racism in her post and didn’t deserve your hate filled post to her. Just stop and think before you post.

Naminyolk · 10/07/2024 10:35

Trying to imagine how a workplace could be so toxic that someone would rather intentionally miss and pay to rebook their flight to stay a couple of extra days in a place that's been hit by a hurricane-

Actually never mind... I got it.

Oh, what did I miss. I called the racism out -below- perfectly waiting for MN hq to censor me or ban me.

however, as nelson Mandela said: societies fail when those with a voice fail to call out prejudices/ racism wherever they see it. I am doing my bit.

MeandT · 10/07/2024 11:17

@LivingOnAnIsland I do hope your concerns have been allayed and your long suffering line report colleague has managed to return to the UK safely without having to spend 12 hours a day of every intervening day in an overcrowded airport waiting to see if a standby seat opened up to get home, after a significant airport closure on account of an actual hurricane in the area 🙄

Perhaps when they get back you could enquire after the wellbeing of their family & friends? How much infrastructure was damaged in the area they were staying? Maybe whether there's a local charity your workplace could run a whip-round or fundraising event for to help those displaced, or a local youth group who has lost facilities as a result?!?

If you have managerial responsibility in your place of work, maybe you could look again at what you could do to accelerate your organisation's shift away from reliance on fossil fuels & commitment to improving renewable energy infrastructure in the UK and in your global supply chain?

So, you know, colleagues aren't inconvenienced again by the impact of the earliest Cat 5 hurricane on record, driven by insane atlantic ocean water temperatures caused by atmospheric CO2 increasing by 25% in our lifetime. And no-one has to take any more days off work ever again as a result?

@AgnesChadwick post was not vitriolic of any kind. I suggest you rather focus your attention on why a woman who is not hr or the line manager come to an MN site to raise why a colleague has not returned from holiday. It has nothing to do with her. She must have lived under a rock not to have heard of the hurricane and even when called out she keeps at it with her whataboutery ie 'oh so you can't go IN to Jamaica, how about going OUT' etc etc. Hoping that she will get support from fellow 'unconsciously biased' women on this board. Sadly but unsurprisingly she has had some
of that exact support.

Some of us are well versed in the micro aggressions directed towards black women from white women and as such call it out and/or question it when we come across it. And then the pearl clutching and feign indignity starts. We know how this goes. And we know how @MNHQ tends to respond. That does not mean though that posters like @AgnesChadwick amd myself will stop calling it out.
