Should I believe colleague that flight from Jamaica is delayed?

LivingOnAnIsland · 08/07/2024 21:40

One of my colleagues was due back from Jamaica on Thursday (11th) and has sent a message to say she will be back early next week as the flights have been messed around because of Hurricane Beryl. I can't find anything online about this, and don't know if she's just decided to stay out longer and leave the rest of us to pick up the pieces or if it's genuine. Does anyone have any information?

OP posts:

Yes we're the idiots... Hmm

:)

in a completely unrelated matter…. OP did you vote for reform? I think you’re their target demographic. Thick as shit.

momager1 · 08/07/2024 23:30

I am going to yell now. sorry.

I LIVE IN THESE ISLANDS. I HAVE FREINDS IN JAMAICA . IT WAS HIT HARD. WE GOT OFF LIGHTLY COMPARED TO THEM. @LivingOnAnIsland HAVE SOME FUCKING COMPASSION. I PROMISE THAT YOUR COWORKER JUST WANTS TO GET HOME. STOP BEING A BITCH. SHE IS JUST WAITING FOR THE FIRST FLIGHT HOME. SHE IS NOT JUST ENJOYING ANOTHER FEW DAYS IN JAMAICA. MY FRIEND WORKS AT A SECRETS RESORT. WHILE THEY HAVE CLEANED UP AS MUCH AS THEY CAN, THEY ARE SHORT ON SUPPLIES AS THINGS ARE NOT BACK TO NORMAL. and.... momager gets off her soap box.

What was in your cornflakes this morning, Sarky Pants? You're being unreasonably rude to people who've taken the time to reply to you.

No I didn't miss that - did you miss that I was asking about flights from Jamaica?

Oh come on, you’ve managed to post on MN, you can’t look up where the hurricane has been? It’s been in the news for the last 2 weeks

YES the airports were closed, YES there were a huge number of flights cancelled and loads and loads of people have been stuck since before it hit (as incoming flights would have been cancelled)

we had a Volcano eruption the day before our flight back last week, they closed the airport for a morning, we ended up diverted/re-routed and taking 24 hours to travel home.

so imagine a hurricane devastating the infrastructure of an island and airport closed for a few days

that bottle neck just grows with every cancelled flight, if your colleague says 2 days, that could be optimistic and she’ll be absolutely exhausted by the experience

Nanaof1 · 08/07/2024 23:34

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 08/07/2024 21:57

Yes, she’s lying.

The airports are fine, the storm is a hologram.

😆👏

I just don't see why she didn't rent a canoe and paddle her way home! Missing a day or two of work because of a simple Cat. 5 hurricane that has killed people. So entitled and spoiled! /s 🙄

Ilikeadrink14 · 08/07/2024 23:39

I think that’s the OP well and truly told! And quite right too. I do hope her colleague hasn’t bought her a nice present from Jamaica!
On a serious note, I hope the colleague got home safely and that she isn’t too traumatised. It must be terrifying when weather changes drastically like that.
I also hope someone shows her this post when she gets back!

saraclara · 08/07/2024 23:41

You'll "give her the benefit of the doubt"?

How about you just believe her, without that grudgng 'yes, but...' tone?

Differentstarts · 08/07/2024 23:45

Martha is that you 😳

LivingOnAnIsland · 08/07/2024 21:55

That's helpful, thank you - it seems to be mostly about whether it's safe to travel there, not back, but it does say that the airports on Jamaica were closed. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt!

How very gracious of you. Your colleague has been there whilst lives have been lost due to the storm, and your first thought is she's decided to stay there longer and let you all pick up the pieces. I wonder if you asked her if she was ok?

I hope you aren't her manager, and if you are, I'm so glad I don't have one.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 08/07/2024 23:50

your colleague or your employee ?
unless you are paying her salary or are responsible for the management of the colleague, then you have no choice but to believe what she says.

Livelovebehappy · 08/07/2024 23:52

Tickytocky · 08/07/2024 22:27

Oh my days !

Who cares if someone’s flight is delayed?
Who cares if someone is spinning a yarn to a few extra days holiday ?

SERIOUSLY (and with all kindness ) - Get.A.Life x

Give over. We’ve all worked with colleagues who spin yarns for extra days off, and yes, it’s bloody annoying when others at the office have to pick up the slack. You don’t know if this colleague has form for taking random time off. I’d be pretty pissed off if I had a boss who didn’t ‘care’ if someone was deliberately taking time off and lying about it. You might not care, but many of us do.

MeinKraft · 08/07/2024 23:55

Hope you get back soon Sandra, these quarterly reports aren't going to do themselves x

Demonhunter · 08/07/2024 23:56

On behalf of the colleague, I think this OP belongs on another thread trending. What a nosy parker! Not even her manager!

As someone who is struggling in the most toxic work environment I just joined about 6 months ago, my anxiety is through the roof reading this

You sound just like the LADY giving me hell at my new workplace

You are such a delight 😒

Spidey66 · 09/07/2024 00:00

Procrastinates · 08/07/2024 21:49

So you think she's lying and would rather spend two extra days in a place which is quite literally being battered.

Seriously. Hmm

That was my thought too. If I was in Jamaica right now I'd want to be back in the UK PDQ. She's lucky she's got the option to leave the country even if its later than expected.

I live here in dominican. It passed over us before hitting jamaica. She is not lying. . Just she and her family need to get home safe.not be ridiculed

Maybe the colleague has form for lying. And it’s a case of it biting her in the arse when the situation is genuine. I work with someone whose depression hits every August, so she takes a month off and we see her Facebook pics of her in her caravan on the coast with her grandchildren. People like this exist in every workplace. Might be genuine this time, but not the other half a dozen times she’s blagged extra days off.

At no point has the OP talked about this colleague's attendance or work ethics, so why are you trying to suggest otherwise?

The OP, who I really hope isn't a manager, has expressed feelings that this colleague might be telling fibs, even though they are actually in Jamaica whilst there is a significant storm which has claimed lives.

I'd guess the colleague in question isn't crying wolf off the information we have.

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 09/07/2024 00:27

@momager1 I hope that you are all safe.

thank you @ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver we are fine here. some damage on the southern part of island but not severe. I am on the southeast coast. We are good. thank you so much for asking.

But others are also not taking into account that this could be possible, and why on this occasion OP is questioning the story, so why are answers not taking this possibility into consideration? You say you don’t think the colleague is crying wolf from the info - which info is that?

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 09/07/2024 00:36

@momager1 keep safe. I think this thread shows that some people in the UK underestimate the power of nature, and how bloody lucky we are actually. Especially when someone is questioning their colleague's absence because they are in Jamaica and then another poster has just questioned your comment. Mind blown.
