Should I believe colleague that flight from Jamaica is delayed?

One of my colleagues was due back from Jamaica on Thursday (11th) and has sent a message to say she will be back early next week as the flights have been messed around because of Hurricane Beryl. I can't find anything online about this, and don't know if she's just decided to stay out longer and leave the rest of us to pick up the pieces or if it's genuine. Does anyone have any information?

They closed the airport which means they then have to rebook everyone. It can easily take up to a week to clear everyone out.

I would want to know the flight number..the airport seems to be running OK right now

If it were a colleague, that would none of your business!

Bjorkdidit · 08/07/2024 21:55

You say she's due back on the 11th, knowing there's going to be a delay 3 days in advance seems unlikely, but if there's a load of people due to fly back in the last few days or today/tomorrow, they could be making everyone wait their turn, meaning those with later bookings will also get pushed back.

The answer is probably like a lot of questions on here, maybe, maybe not. No-one on here can tell you based on limited information.

That's helpful, thank you - it seems to be mostly about whether it's safe to travel there, not back, but it does say that the airports on Jamaica were closed. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt!

The flights might be running on time now but all the passengers from the previously cancelled flights will be waiting for spaces on the ones flying now. This is pretty obvious, isn't it? I really hope you aren't her boss.

BodyKeepingScore · 08/07/2024 21:57

My cousin was stranded in Jamaica for the same reason, due home last Friday won't be home until tomorrow. No access to phone signal or electric until yesterday to let any of us know. If it's a colleague and not an employee then why is it your concern?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 08/07/2024 21:57

Yes, she’s lying.

The airports are fine, the storm is a hologram.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 08/07/2024 21:58

Flights may be taking off on time now, but there will be a backlog from when it was closed. Flights may be leaving on time doesn’t mean she can get a seat on one.

id give her the benefit of the doubt because I’ve been in places on holiday when a natural disaster has struck and I just wanted to get home. This isn’t going to be a nice relaxing break.

FrothyCothy · 08/07/2024 21:58

I can’t imagine it’s been a very nice holiday for her over the weekend, I wouldn’t begrudge her an extra day or two personally, but would like to think she’s being genuine

Thanks for the sensible answers, I'm ignoring the idiots.

You didn't give her the benefit of the doubt though?!

You started a mumsnet thread.

You could have googled 'Jamaica airports hurricane 'and got your answer

zebedeehadapoint · 08/07/2024 21:59

You'll give her the benefit of the doubt? Wow. Check you. How gracious of you.

MonsteraMama · 08/07/2024 21:59

I think you need to wind your fucking neck in and stop acting like a lunatic watching the live departures. You're not her mum or her minder, it's literally none of your business.

I fucking hope not. If she is then Christ the poor women should be looking for a new job ASAP who'd want to work in such a toxic environment.

Just what I was about to say! I would hate to work with someone like OP, spending time checking up on a colleague in this way. OP is not painting herself in a good light here (and tbh, if the colleague had decided to take some extra time off I wouldn't blame her).

Babbahabba · 08/07/2024 22:02

Does she have form for taking the piss with annual leave? Or pulling sickies? Unless she had a dodgy history, I'd always give staff benefit of the doubt.

No no. The storm is a portal, which will pick you up gently and deposit you and your suitcases in the Gatwick arrivals area if you just go outside and wait. Honestly OP, your colleague is such a wuss waiting for an actual flight home.

Gosh, how benevolent of you! What exactly line management have you over her? I hope none as you come across as malevolent, vindictive and a throughly nasty individual!

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 08/07/2024 22:04

She's unlikely to lie about something that's easily checked. Also, does it matter to her if you believe her or not? Will you be asking her questions when she returns?

DreamTheMoors · 08/07/2024 22:04

Call the airlines, Ms. Suspicious.
I want to talk to the manager!

scotstars · 08/07/2024 22:05

If you are her boss ask her to forward correspondence from the airline. If you are a colleague why are you worrying?

SaltyGod · 08/07/2024 22:06

I was once stuck in a holiday destination for an additional 3 days due to travel issues (nothing as dramatic as a hurricane) 3 days of anxiety, stress, trying to put a brave face on it for the kids, consoling crying kids, calling pet sitters, cancelling arrangements, endless hours of being at an airport staring at a screen knowing you aren’t going home yet, crappy airport hotels all sharing a tiny bed, dirty clothes, bad food, big expenses with no certainty of repayment.

At least my colleagues were nice about it when I got back (and my boss didn’t make me take extra leave for those days, which I loved her for!)
