Well it’s not fair but it’s politically poor judgment. It does seem harsh because he was a teenager. But if you are in politics you can’t say things like this unless you accept that it is divisive. People should not be racist to him obviously, but they won’t be prepared to get into the nuances of age and inexperience.

It’s what we tell our dc time and time again - whatever you put on the internet is there forever.

goingtohellinahandcart · 26/06/2024 12:57

not seen that one before but I like it😂

Absolutely.

Anyone who wants to stand as an MP should first hire a professional to make sure their social media is thoroughly laundered!

mibbelucieachwell · 26/06/2024 13:36

Boring update. DC got his postal vote a wee while ago and has posted it back. I don't know for sure who he voted for but he was planning to vote tactically.

prettybird · 26/06/2024 13:44

From as soon as ds has been on-line (since he was about 12 Shock), we've advised him never to put anything on t'internet that he wasn't prepared to stand by as the Internet lasts forever Shock

Given that he might end up in a career in politics, it's just as well Smile

Piggywaspushed · 26/06/2024 13:49

I mean, he might be prepared to stand by white man's tears. It is a thing. The Labour party is running scared of discussing white privilege and otehr such matters.

Like Reform did, for example.

Honestly given that elections and politics are about the broadest vote (unless you are Farage then you are looking to divide people for votes) then this is a fools errand. Clacton voters will tune him out.

The "White Mans Tears" thing may have been a reference to a theme of French philosophy

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tears_of_the_White_Man

possibly to be discussed along with "white mans burden".

However, I would respectfully suggest that such nuanced debates with any number of intricacies and subtleties to consider are probably not going to be resolved on Twitter, even if it's called "X". In fact the closest you will probably get on social media is a 15 second interpretive dance on TikTok.

You may not remember this, but back in 2019 Boris Johnson pulled out of various debates and interviews.

Guess who deputised...

I've been looking at exactly what Rishi Sunak promised voters five years ago.

Meanwhile, who feels like inspiring ideas:

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

It’s pretty unrealistic to expect a teenager who probably hadn’t even thought of entering politics to have political judgement.

I know! It’s really unfair. But people are much harsher on this stuff when it’s there in black and white online. Farage is said to have sung songs about gassing Jews when he was a teenager. No trace of that of course, just a recollection from a contemporary. Because it can be dismissed.

And Johnson's comments were just 'banter'

For some reason I have just remembered The Mikado

My object all sublime
I shall achieve in time—
To let the punishment fit the crime,
The punishment fit the crime;
And make each prisoner pent
Unwillingly represent
A source of innocent merriment,
Of innocent merriment!
The advertising quack who wearies
With tales of countless cures,
His teeth, I’ve enacted,
Shall all be extracted
By terrified amateurs.
The music-hall singer attends a series
Of masses and fugues and ‘ops’
By Bach, interwoven
With Spohr and Beethoven,
At classical Monday Pops.
The billiard-sharp whom anyone catches
His doom’s extremely hard—
He’s made to dwell
In a dungeon cell
On a spot that’s always barred.
And there he plays extravagant matches
In fitless finger-stalls,
On a cloth untrue
With a twisted cue
And elliptical billiard balls.

I think Sunak’s jumped the shark today with his attack on David Tennant. Other politicians are fair game but an actor?

He's aping Boris, thinking the crowd will go there.

My take is "the crowd" really could not give a toss.

In fact (whisper it) it seems there are some issues that you can add to any debate to immediately reduce the public interest in it. Much as oil lessens surface tension in water preventing foaming.

Just add a drop of <insert the issue we shall never speak of> to a "raging debate" and marvel as tumbleweed develops.

Maybe that's what happened to the immigration debate. One drop of Lozza Fox and all of a sudden no one cared any more.

Evenstar · 26/06/2024 15:00

@SerendipityJane that subject was raised by a band performing at the music festival I was at this weekend, there was a mass exodus from the tent they were performing in.

Piggywaspushed · 26/06/2024 15:01

I swear the politicians scan MN before offering opinions.

It wasn't a debate, though. It was his jocular quip in reply to a fellow Black activist .Someone worked very hard to unearth it.

DuncinToffee · 26/06/2024 15:17

The Tories have also picked a fight with Martin Lewis now by misquoting/editing his comments and using them for an ad.

Maybe I was put here to be the voice of the 80s ? Alexei Sayle had a routine about all the working class revolutionaries of Stoke Newington rejecting the arguments of Jean Paul Sartre based on his lack of grasp of the local culture ..

Jean Paul Sartre was a very clever man.
As a thinker there was no one keener.
But the all hate, round our way.
'Coz he know fuck all about the Cortina.
