I remember Eric Pickles distaste for May's 'hostile enviroment' and his concerns about othering people and where that would lead. That was back in 2012 I think. Obviously Windrush was where it led.
Since then ministers have used inflammatory and racist language. Gove suggesting that we have an 'enemy within', Anderson saying that Khan handed London to the Islamists, not to mention Goldsmiths reprehensible campaign against Khan, using words like swarm (Cameron?), invasion and overwhelmed (Braverman) at the despatch box. Hester said that Diane Abbot makes him hate all black women. He literally wanted to deny her food. And in return he apologised for 'rudeness'. Obviously he's not a Cabinet minister but someone that can afford to spend £15 million buying influence.
We know why the language has been used - an attempt to stem the votes leaking towards Farage/UKIP/Reform.
But language matters. You can argue for lower immigration without using any of those words. It isnt necessary. They have been used for a reason, to make racist voters feel seen. We have discussed the language countless times on these threads. I imagine some people might dismissed us as woke or snowflakey.
I am - as others on these threads are - repulsed at the language directed at Sunak AND infuriated that our concerns weren't acknowledged.
That doesn't mean Sunak deserved foul abuse.
It mean nobody deserves it.
