I think many candidates target first time voters.

Ooh, leafleters just passing, came up our drive and doubled back on seeing our Labour placard. DH has gone out to see them. I can hear words on the doorstep. I wonder who they are. There is laughter.

*Edit It was Plaid Cymru. The laughter was because he was checking they weren’t Reform.

Edited

That is a nice story!

I was thinking of voting Plaid, but our seat has been blue before, once by less than 200 votes, so I decided belt and braces needed and will vote Labour.

BestIsWest · 22/06/2024 14:15

@Iclaudine, there was once a very tiny blue majority here too. I wonder if we’re in the same constituency!

SerendipityJane · 22/06/2024 14:42

Farage blaming Brexit failure (I notice no one picked up that he admits it now) on net zero.

Next week it will be sunspots.

Notonthestairs · 22/06/2024 14:49

I read that Guardian Starmer interview and then flicked open Twitter to read this from The Telegraph -

Sunak has got a luxury penthouse apartment near Santa Monica beach. The authorities assess that it’s worth $8m — more than has ever been reported.

A bill we saw shows he paid $90,000 in property taxes on it last year — more than 8x the tax he paid on his three UK homes.

2/

The Sunaks have maintained local ties. They fund a “Akshata Murty '02 and Rishi Sunak Professor of PPE” at LA’s Claremont McKenna College.

The current prof gave her first lecture in post on “Broken Campaign Promises and Their Emotional Aftermath”.

He can't exactly blame it on the war in Ukraine

As the man who made Trumps life 10x more difficult by stupidly managing to allow a vaguely left leaning government into power in the UK while the entire rest of the world is going the other way, I wonder if he will be so welcome come December ? Especially if we can get team Biden to welcome him with open arms.

This is dds first time to vote, her opinion of reform us derisory (saw someone being interviewed about how we need to be making our young people be proud of their heritage and actually asked me "what they fuck was that?". She would like to vote green, but will probably go Labour to get the tories out.

I think it might be ds1 first time, although he may have been eligible last time. I'm pretty sure he will go labour because he thinks the tories are a bunch of fuckwits who have screwed over his generation, and he's not a racist.

I have no idea about ds1 but as we have brought him up to be a decent human being, I suspect not tory or reform.

The young people I work with are talking politics which can only be a good thing. They are engaged, and it's their future on the line.

L1ttledrummergirl · 22/06/2024 15:08

I've seen three large posters for the conservatives in Cornwall. All looked as though they were around different boundaries of the same farm. I also saw one in a garden centre and thought that if I lived in the area I would know where to avoid in the future.

Pedallleur · 22/06/2024 15:16

I thought it common knowledge that Sunak had a place in California. I didn't know it was so expensive. He met his wife on California and as we know he has said he intends to go back hence his Green Card.

BIossomtoes · 22/06/2024 15:20

Didn’t Sunak hand his green card back when he was crowned PM?

SerendipityJane · 22/06/2024 15:29

I think he says he did. US State Department is usually quite forthcoming on such matters (the published Boris's renunciation) so he' be a fucking idiot to lie.

There was also some disquiet stateside - when I scoured some US legal newsgroups there was some chatter over whether he had lied to get it.

Green cards are usually only issued on the understanding thy be used to work or study and live in the US. So a serving UK minister holding one is highly irregular.

Saucery · 22/06/2024 15:40

think many candidates target first time voters.

We were talking about this, this afternoon. DS has had targeted communications from Conservatives, Labour and Lib Dems. We’ve had general unaddressed leaflets and DH had an addressed letter from the Tory candidate (not me, maybe they know what a woman is so have only sent the Man Of The House a letter Grin).

Piggywaspushed · 22/06/2024 15:41

Along the Labour bedecked Road leading to my school, 2 Reform signs have appeared at the gates of the Big House. They are mounted about 20 foot up in the air. This strikes me as a tempting target game for passing youth.

BIossomtoes · 22/06/2024 15:59

I’m far from young and I’d take them as a challenge!

tobee · 22/06/2024 16:29

I'm trying to imagine why they'd put them up so high.

To attract high flying voters.

tobee · 22/06/2024 16:32

I'm wondering how Reform might not become the mainstream right party if the Tories implode. How to keep it in the public consciousness as extreme.iyswim

tobee · 22/06/2024 16:33

lol @Ohanother1goodbye

Come round and we can take one each! Bring a stepladder and a cricket bat.

newnamethanks · 22/06/2024 18:01

The only posters I've seen have been 2 Conservative on farmers fields. However, outside a local Conservative Club , there-is a chalkboard headed Forthcoming Events. Someone has been kind enough to write 'Labour Government' across it. Very cheering 😀

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/06/2024 18:09

SerendipityJane · 22/06/2024 17:51

If Tories can't look after themselves, then why should we ever trust them to look after us ?

Honestly bet they can’t wait for the 5th July at this point.
