Just googled that. Looks like it could in fact be true and also like Russia were ahead of western science
https://www.google.com/amp/s/phys.org/news/2004-09-inexhaustible-source-energy-methane-deep.amp

They believed it in 1986. It certainly shaped their energy policy. And possibly economic policy.

At the time the idea of a near-peer being 100% self sufficient in energy wasn't taken as a threat. Maybe if it had have been, the company I worked for would have stayed in public hands.

On that theme, I have never really been able to grasp why the UK hasn't used it's unique geographical, scientific, political and economic positions to push for 99% self sufficient energy. It would have totally insulated us from a lot or world instability over the years.

I'm old enough to know what it means. Many people don't recognise Farage for what he is, it's mostly not their fault as they're ignorant - meaning they lack information - of the bigger Farage picture. He's an absolute threat and a Hero of the Russian Nation. I'm feeling very WW2ish. Unusual for me but this guy is a threat to us all.

I'm mildly surprised he could get milkshaked. I guess spetnaz training isn't what it used to be these days. Or maybe they just assigned him the class dummies.

It's weird to think that Trump is protected by the best trained US and Russian bodyguards. But it explains his continued existence.

newnamethanks · 22/06/2024 09:53

Yes. He'll need to keep on side now or stay away from balconies. I fear there's no hope for us with our twentieth-century ideas of fairness and that the future, unbelievably to me, belongs to them. It won't be good.

mibbelucieachwell · 22/06/2024 09:54

Do we know who the milkshakes throwers are?

I've wondered if they're plants to make him look victimised and strengthen his trumpesque claims that the big bad establishment needs a Samson like figure (ie him) to stand up for the ordinary man.

Obviously I'll retract this theory if they're demonstrably 'legit' though. Grin

itsgettingweird · 22/06/2024 11:10

My ds can vote for the first time this year.

I'm obviously wayyyyy into the voting catagory.

Ds has received an addressed to him flyer from Braverman and the Tory's having got his details from electoral register.

I have not.

Coincidence or they are targeting a specific age group, there is a whole section on how Starmer flip flops if his idea appear unpopular and how they don't have a plan - but if they do they should be sharing it as the electorate deserve that 🙄

And a whole section of how she secured 20k police and has seen the opening of more police stations in our constituency. Probably hoping they are too young to remember many of the still closed ones that were once open and that many of the ones that have been opened were once open up and running and actually then closed!

They are honestly scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

DuncinToffee · 22/06/2024 11:14

My DD is also voting for the first time this year and also received a leaflet from our local Tory candidate.

DS and DH did not.

Well Braverman can try but...

And here’s an update of the "what share of young adults really really dislike the Conservative party" chart:

Now up to a record 45% 📈

Chart shows the share giving the Tories a 0 out of 10. Young people’s distaste for the Tories is getting very deeply rooted

BestIsWest · 22/06/2024 11:19

I think many candidates target first time voters.

Ooh, leafleters just passing, came up our drive and doubled back on seeing our Labour placard. DH has gone out to see them. I can hear words on the doorstep. I wonder who they are. There is laughter.

*Edit It was Plaid Cymru. The laughter was because he was checking they weren’t Reform.

Notonthestairs · 22/06/2024 11:21

Maybe young people have read that between 2010-2018 funding fell for police forces by a third.

We lost 22,000 police officers and replaced (some of) them with less experienced officers.

Since 2010 43% of courts were closed.

They cut prison funding but simultaneously encouraged longer sentences.

I don't think it's simply the impact of Brexit on younger voters - young people have witnessed a lack of state planning on a massive scale.

The fossil fuel, nuclear companies have zero interest in self sufficient energy until they need to be in which case they can buy into it. They've spent billions on lobbying and influencing govts in order to make hundreds of billions or even trillions

user8800 · 22/06/2024 11:31

Ds also voting for the first time

I haven't noticed him being canvassed more than us

Drove through quite a posh neighbourhood yesterday...several labour placards which surprised me

Quiet torys won't be advertising their vote, though 🤔

Ds tells me torys and labour pretty much head to head here. I thought reform would do better here tbh

CassieMaddox · 22/06/2024 11:32

Rishi Sunak will be answering questions from Mumsnet users in a written Q+A.

Just noticed this was "written Q+A". What a coward.

Notonthestairs · 22/06/2024 11:46

We know why Sunak and the Conservatives havent 'used it's unique geographical, scientific, political and economic positions to push for 99% self sufficient energy.'

During the first week of the election 40% of all donations to the Conservative party were donors with ties to oil and gas interests.

Its just not in the party's interest for us to be self sufficient. Party before country.

yeah, he was never going to answer questions any other way - it didn't exactly go well for Johnson did it (nods to @Cheguevarahamster and @itsgettingweird )

Just seen my first vote conservative signs of the election! Both attached to the gate of a field (where creamfields is held out of interest) next to some overgrown bushes. He has been brave enough to use blue and the word conservative on them. Both signs are about A3 size and not very prominent.

We have some blue placards on the road to town. I can't tell if they have been placed in the hedge in such a way that only the cows in the next field can see them or whether some has perhaps moved them their.

pointythings · 22/06/2024 12:19

I saw my first Conservative placard in a random field in Hertfordshire, driving back from moving DD to Bristol. Also got a Labour leaflet through the door.

Today I've been taking many many cat photos, as I am expecting the tax burden on these threads to rise.

I love one of the replies which says the advert looks as though the Tories are planning to bring in national ULEZ.

Another own goal 😂

tobee · 22/06/2024 13:57

I think I saw a Conservative poster for the first time (I was going by in a car) although it was possible it was reform. Aren't they both blue?

See Money Week has a front cover of how you can protect your wealth from a Labour government. Imagine if there were similar front covers saying "how to maximise your benefits when the next government come in" The reaction there'd be!!

countrygirl99 · 22/06/2024 14:00

Got back from holiday to discover our Conservative posters in our usually true blue village.
