Agree on both counts, I liked a lot of the Corbyn manifesto a lot of it was actually very sensible & could have made a huge difference to peoples lives.

Yep

Lucy Frazer, "We are announcing a 1% tax cut year on year"

Sophy Ridge, "It's still going up"

SR, "Just acknowledge it. It sounds like you're just evading it"

LF, "I'm absolutely not evading it.. We need to be honest with peopel"

SR, "Be honest with people. Taxes are still projected to go up under your plans"

LF, "We spent"

SR, "You said you want to be honest with people, this is you chance"

LF, "The projections show that tax levels will be X and as a result of the manifesto we are reducing that tax burden"

SR, "That's not correct, the tax burden is projected to go up"

LF, "What you saw form Ed's chart, the gap"

SR, "I'm not talking about the gap. The overall tax burden is projected to go up"

LF, "What what what Ed's chart showed was that we managed to find tax tax cuts, from what the position would otherwise be"

SR, "It's going up less quickly, but it's still going up"

They have put mandatory national service in the manifesto,

"It’s only right that young people are given the opportunity to serve it with pride."

Didn't anyone stop to think that it's just inviting people to reflect on the attitude of their leader to a previous generation who served with pride and died in the cause?

That’s on a par with Diane Abbott’s interview about the cost of an increase in police.

I think that's meant to be read disjunctively not conjunctively. Sunak was making this point in his interview last night - the NHS workforce has increased but per capita productivity has decreased for many reasons (I can confirm out of date IT systems are a big one as an NHS employee). So we can both recruit more of the staff AND drive up productivity its not recruit staff to increase productivity because as you say that makes no sense.

The big issue is most of the system issues we have which reduce staff productivity are also really expensive to fix and have not been budgeted for. Its much easier to say we'll hire x number of nurses than address the massive cost of capital investment. Which is why they promised it in 2019 and didn't deliver

A friend of mine works in admin in a big city hospital. They recently revamped the department and reduced the admin staff from 7 to 3, but the reality was that only 3 of them had been doing the work anyway so it was those 3 who were kept on. However, they were too scared of possible legal action to boot them out, so the other four got wished onto other departments.

If that's repeated elsewhere in the NHS, it's true that for that sort of job there are efficiencies to be made, but it isn't going to happen till hospitals become more commercial in their employment practices.

That’s on a par with Diane Abbott’s interview about the cost of an increase in police.

And Abbott had the reasonable excuse that she was having a hypo at the time IIRC.

Just watched Campbell and Stewart Rest is Politics on Channel 4. That was good. Nice cheap programme to make. Doing the deal with Channel 4 on election night means the programme has to have occasional comments from Goggle Box regulars. Somewhat 🙄 but I suppose it might encourage a different demographic to give watching it a try.

How that woman rose to any kind of prominence in politics I just don't know.

newnamethanks · 12/06/2024 07:13

Her talent for evasion? Her ability to skirt around a question without answering? Valuable skills in today's politics. She'll be PM in no time at all.

I'm not a moment fan but it makes him look foolish imo

Its good he said this.

One thing a lot people said in 2019 was Corbyns manifesto was full of promises, most totally unaffordable and stupid, free broadband for all.... quite why JC thought giving the wealthy this was beyond me.

You say Starmer backed the manifesto, yes he did, what was the alternative? resign and split the Labour party? handing the Tories, not just an 80 seat majority, but a 200 seat one & the possible end of the 'party, he knew they weren't going win, it was damage limitation.

Starmer needs to convince the electorate that Lab have changed & they very much have.

InMySpareTime · 12/06/2024 08:02

It takes a certain level of cognitive dissonance to think you can assert that the policies of Corbyn's Labour are pertinent but those of May/Johnson/Truss's Conservatives are all in the past.
I wonder how Sunak reconciles these positions in his mind.

Paul Brand's interview with Sunak

https://x.com/PaulBrandITV/status/1800755827927613806

When asked how he can relate to voters - what he’s ever gone without - he says as a child he had to forgo “Sky TV”.

‘It was incredible but it just ran over.’

This was the moment Rishi Sunak arrived for the interview having just landed back from Normandy after cutting D-Day commemorations short to return to the election campaign.

Notonthestairs · 12/06/2024 08:52

We didn't have Sky but that was due to snobbery.

I think if you can afford to spend 10s of thousands of £ on sending 2/3 kids to Winchester then it probably wasn't the cost of Sky holding them back.

Sunak returned from Normandy for manifesto meetings - maybe he meant those overran?

Everyone had to forgo Sky TV when he was a child. Because it didn't bloody exist. It seems like it's been around forever, but it first launched 35 years ago. I know he looks about 10 but I'm pretty sure he's older than Sky TV.
