Someone is trolling Sunak, just to see how far they can push it, surely?

Nice to think he reckons he's left us with a few billion in the pot though...
Hahahahahahahahaha.
It's not April 1st, is it?

Sunak is being threatened with legal action for refusing to allow Back Boris supporters to stand as Tory candidates https://x.com/camillahmturner/status/1794436144043585670?s=61&t=xKCXjKa1-S6Ks0nSd_LXGg

So, so good. Perfect.

Notonthestairs · 25/05/2024 22:53

Any MP that backs this must ensure their children and any grandchildren do national service. Every single one.

Notonthestairs · 25/05/2024 22:56

Rishi Sunak is bound to be asked if tonight’s announcement means he is giving up on levelling-up Britain’s left-behind areas

  • given the national service policy would be funded mostly (though not entirely) from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which was previously earmarked for levelling-up

My kids are either too old or too disabled to qualify. Still annoyed at the idea of it being wheeled out.

Evenstar · 25/05/2024 23:01

Paul Lewis (Moneybox Radio 4) has tweeted that the policy is being launched with an exclusive article by Sunak in the Mail on Sunday. Unspecified sanctions for refusing to take part https://x.com/paullewismoney/status/1794481158077518093?s=61&t=xKCXjKa1-S6Ks0nSd_LXGg

Dd would be in the age range. Her two strongest suits currently are computer science and fencing. I've no intention of having her go into cyber security with a load of male peers barely supervised (when she currently wants to do comp sci or medicine at uni) and I strongly suspect the days of fencing our way out of trouble with Ruski's have long passed...

I simply do not trust men to create an environment that isn't hugely mysoginistic and open to misconduct. It is quite concerning, especially considering the state of the Courts and the current issues in the services.

Anyway, I've found myself worrying about it and forgetting that they've a rats chance in hell of subjecting her to that.

My parents were the same @Tobee. DF would be 86 now but was an outspoken vocal critic of Brexit. DM cried when the result became clear. Life long socialists.

Edited

And DF was one of the very last to do National Service and hated it and would never inflict it on any one else. He said the thought of having to do it blighted his teenage years (and he was a very active, sporty young man who ended up playing rugby for his regiment).

Well it’s really all a bit of a shit show isn’t it Grin

cakeorwine · 25/05/2024 23:19

It's in all the Tory supporting papers.

But I suspect a lot of questions will be asked about it.

Especially about the impact on the economy, education, working lives and the practical side - university and school age 18 year olds will have busy weekends so can't give 1 up every month to volunteer and those who are working will not want to volunteer 1 weekend a month.

The Tories can announce what they want now. They won't be in power so none of it will happen. They could announce that everyone on benefits will be moved to the moon but it's all just a joke now. 6 weeks is too long.

tobee · 25/05/2024 23:35

They've not been too good at getting their ideas off the ground (pun intended) even with an ever depleting majority.

Scottish young people can and do go to Uni at 17. Some go from S5 - and even ds, who did S6, was 17 when he started.

So would similar kids be expected to start Uni, then go off to do their National Service, and then re-start their studies? Or spend one weekend a month "volunteering" - what about during their exams? Or the jobs that they need to top up their loans?

I think that @DuncinToffee has put her finger on it - Sunak is being trolled. I actually think that it is yet more proof that the Tories neither expect nor want to win the election.

Anyone who watches Clarkson's Farm will know Charlie - who always brings a touch of realism and practicalities to Clarkson's ideas.

I hope a journalist - or even a member of the public - asks Sunak these practical questions.

e.g. I have an 18 year old who is at University. Will they be expected to volunteer 1 weekend a month? What if they have a job at the weekend? What if they have studying to do? What about when they come home? Have you thought this through?

Conservatives plan to bring back mandatory National Service - BBC News

It said 18-year-olds would have a choice of either joining the military full-time, or volunteering one weekend every month carrying out a community service.
The party is proposing a Royal Commission to consider the details but would plan for the first teenagers to take part in September 2025.

The cost is expected to be around £2.5bn per year.

Under the plans, young people could choose a full-time, 12-month placement in the armed forces or UK cyber defence, learning about logistics, cyber security, procurement or civil response operations.

Their other option would be to volunteer one weekend per month - or 25 days per year - in their community with organisations such as fire, police and the NHS.

What about university?
School work?
Jobs...

What if they refused?

Hands up who wants a conscripted 18 year old reluctantly doing his mandatory weekend in the NHS after a hard week's work looking after them or their loved ones when they're ill

I'm wondering about the 18 year olds in school working towards A levels. Do they have to do this nonsense?

This is a plan drawn up by someone who has never had to manage bored teenagers on work experience.
