I'm out of the loop, so I apologise if this has already been explained earlier in the thread. Does anyone have any idea what Sunak's game is? Why has he called a general election a couple of weeks after the Tory bloodbath at the local elections? He said recently the election would take place in autumn.
The BBC, Guardian and CNN all say that he's calling it now because he thinks support for the Tories is going to plummet even further... but that doesn't really make sense, does it? If the polls suggest he's going to lose, why not push the election back as far as he can in the hope that Labour will be hit by some sort of scandal? The latest he can hold the election is January, I think - in political terms, that's decades away. Everything could change.
Plus, in the days since the election, he's said and done so many odd things that it feels like self-sabotage at this point. Does he just want to get it over with, get kicked out of office, and enjoy the summer? (Have I answered my own question?)
