I feel sick at the thought of that.

TokyoSushi · 25/05/2024 22:08

I have a young teen and a pre teen and it's an absolutely no way from me. If the want/choose to do something like that, then great, their choice and I'll support them, but mandatory? Just no.

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/05/2024 22:09

It'll be grammar schools next.🤣🤣🤣

tobee · 25/05/2024 22:09

Ugh Sunak in my home town today as reported above. Fortunately I was not there. God knows why he bothered as electoral calculus, fwiw, has Tories waaaaay down in 3rd place here; behind Labour and the libdems.

Zonder · 25/05/2024 22:10

Just heard that on itv news! Who does he think is going to vote for them because of that?

Aren't the services dead against national service because youngsters doing it as rank amateurs for 2 years far more of a hindrance than it's worth?

On other issues. who are the Tories actually trying to appeal to? I've no idea.

TokyoSushi · 25/05/2024 22:12

The elderly and the racist mostly it seems... 😐

fabio12 · 25/05/2024 22:13

It doesn't say if this is both sexes, but I presume so?
I don't think I'd be happy with a teen daughter going into a male environment, such as the police, without a lot of changes taking place first.

I can only imagine the masculinity in the cyber defence side too, even though women are just as capable. I can't imagine it being fun for girls.

tobee · 25/05/2024 22:14

Also someone ask Sunak if he'd do national service. And will his daughters be doing it? Especially as we are in such a perilous world situation as he frames it.

Bluebell247 · 25/05/2024 22:14

I have a pre teen son and I'd hate for him to do national service. Not that I was voting Conservative anyway, but if I was this policy would be a big no no.

TokyoSushi · 25/05/2024 22:15

They said on Sky News the proposal is for everybody, boys & girls.

prettybird · 25/05/2024 22:17

He's going all out into Conservative wet dreams, knowing that he'll never have to implement them as there's not a snowball's chance in hell of them winning Shock

So many things wrong with that proposal: not least how he would propose making Scotland, Wales and NI implement that (given that the "volunteering" option would have them working in devolved areas like the NHS, police and fire service Hmm) ConfusedConfused

L1ttledrummergirl · 25/05/2024 22:18

Pmsl at national service. They can't even process people that want to join into the services, how the hell does he think they will process those that don't?
What's he going to do? Put dissenters through the courts and into prison? They'll be retired before there are enough courtrooms and staff free to prosecute them in, and as for imprisonment- haha.

Idiot man.

My dyed in the wool socialist 87 and 89 year old parents would be highly offended by that! I was with them today and they were fuming about this assumption that they would be Brexit supporters!!!

TokyoSushi · 25/05/2024 22:19

Thank goodness for people like your parents @tobee!

tobee · 25/05/2024 22:22

When politicians have proposed a what-can-we-do-with-the-young? ideas before, based on charity work volunteering, community engagement, team building fun etc, it's always gone down like a fart in a bucket. And everyone knows it's never gonna get off the ground as too much hassle and worth fuck all to anyone.

Oi! Don't tar all elderly with the same brush!

BestIsWest · 25/05/2024 22:29

My parents were the same @Tobee. DF would be 86 now but was an outspoken vocal critic of Brexit. DM cried when the result became clear. Life long socialists.

IClaudine · 25/05/2024 22:30

The middle class Tory mummies on MN will be squirming with this one. They'd happily ship the working class youngsters off for National Service, but not their precious little babes.

Yes, I was just about to say the same.

They will have to do either year-long army placement or one weekend a month volunteering for a year

Who will do what 🤔

Conservatives plan to bring back mandatory National Service - BBC News

It said 18-year-olds would have a choice of either joining the military full-time, or volunteering one weekend every month carrying out a community service.
The party is proposing a Royal Commission to consider the details but would plan for the first teenagers to take part in September 2025.

The cost is expected to be around £2.5bn per year.

Under the plans, young people could choose a full-time, 12-month placement in the armed forces or UK cyber defence, learning about logistics, cyber security, procurement or civil response operations.

Their other option would be to volunteer one weekend per month - or 25 days per year - in their community with organisations such as fire, police and the NHS.

What about university?
School work?
Jobs...

What if they refused?
