That's brilliant.

He looks almost fine with a beard. Or as a woman. Quite fetching, in a Tory kind of way.

"But in a decision notice - sent to The Mirror just hours before the General Electionn* was called - the ICO ordered the Treasury to publish the information "within 30 calendar days". It means the Government has until June 21 to publish the details - just two weeks before the country heads to the polls."

Well. There we are.

"At the time one Whitehall official claimed an internal government analysis showed cutting the support would be "catastrophic".

There's a degree of shock being expressed in social media about the unusual experience of hearing a politician (i.e. Starmer) actually answering the questions put to him on the media round today.

Exclusive:

Labour wins endorsement of a coalition of business leaders who have said that a ‘new outlook’ is needed so the UK can ‘break free’ from a decade of economic stagnation

In letter to The Times they say economy has been ‘beset by instability, stagnation and a lack of long-term focus’

Letter is signed by executives past and present from JP Morgan, Heathrow, Aston Martin, JD Sports, Iceland and the advertising giant WPP

Sir Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, and Tom Kerridge, the restaurateur, have also signed the letter, along with the founder of a childcare company in which the prime minister’s wife previously held shares

Something to do with giving pensioners more money.
Upgrading triple lock.

cakeorwine · 27/05/2024 22:38

So fuck the young.

He really does hate young people.

DuncinToffee · 27/05/2024 22:39

"Paid for by clamping down on tax avoidance" 😂

I wonder if they have thought about social care, getting an NHS appointment, getting a dentist, the effect of an ageing population?

These important things.

He could easily make it up if Lord Ashcroft is happy to be a sacrificial lamb for the greater good?

Oh, have they only just discovered this?

IClaudine · 27/05/2024 22:51

Good. This will lose them even more votes.

Also, could it possibly be illegal to have a special tax band for a certain age group (age discrimination)?

Sunk may want to read up on the McCloud judgement. Different issue, but similar principal of favouring one age group over another.

BIossomtoes · 27/05/2024 23:00

That’s a really good point @IClaudine. Not only would I be happy to pay more tax but I really don’t want another reason for pensioners to be demonised by younger people.

Explanation from Ben Chu

https://x.com/BenChu_/status/1795206142504685772

What’s happening with this new Conservative party proposal of “Triple Lock Plus”/"Quadruple lock"?

It’s essentially a proposal to reverse a planned tax rise for pensioners from this Government (while pushing on with the tax rise for everyone else)

Let’s explain...

"Also, could it possibly be illegal to have a special tax band for a certain age group (age discrimination)? "

We used to have special tax bands according to age - Conservatives got rid of them in 2012 as personal tax allowance had risen & to simplify the system.
Strange to reintroduce something they were against.

Notonthestairs · 27/05/2024 23:07

NB it was George Osborne who got rid of the higher tax allowance for pensioners. Now want to bring it back. But at a lower level than it was in 2010.

Like corporation tax, pension lifetime allowance, personal allowance, another example of total lack of consistency in tax policy

They seem to be quite keen on this over the last few days. Isn’t that going to be paying for something else as well.
