So if leaving the country for a year doesn't exempt you from national service, how long does? Or do all British 18 year olds living abroad have to do it?

I still want to know how they can force anyone back to do it .... say someone who holds an EU citizenship so cab quite happily stay there forever.

What about 18 year old EU citizens (or other nationalities) living in the UK, will we be forcing them into the military?

Interesting question. Presumably if the are a UK citizen, then yes.

However given this mobs ability to craft shit laws, I can see people arresting tourists who have just turned 18 and carting them away for "Sunakification".

For the rest of the campaign, Labour are now bombproof. There is nothing any interviewer - not even Laura the K - can accuse them of that can't be simply rebutted with a "Yes, but let's talk about National Service, shall we ?" to take the curse of anything.

Boris Johnson used to love a sporty opportunity or ( even better ) wearing a high vis.
He was never out of one at one stage.

Secretly , politicians must hate all this fakery I bet having to talk to people and pretend to like stuff. I know I would.
(Do they still ' kiss babies ' ? I can imagine that's not encouraged anymore. Different times)

Ruth Davidson said on HIGNFY last week that visits to i.e. a sausage factory were better than having to sit in the House Of Commons. Ian Hislop did a little pursed-lip face but I think it’s a quip that has a lot of truth about it. We’ve encouraged politicians to piss about in sausage factories, fridges, playing fields (and HIGNFY) and this is what we get - an empty popularity contest.

Steve Baker actually went on his holiday this week.

He said that before he booked his break, he and fellow MPs were assured by the PM that it would be ok to head off to the beach this week.

Proof, if it was needed , that the PM really doesn't like many of his colleagues!
No wonder they are upset.

BIossomtoes · 27/05/2024 18:19

There’s somebody at CCHQ who really, really doesn’t like Sunak.

It will be a few decades before the Tories allow themselves to be led by a TechBro again.

In fact on that note, there may be some inside track on who might become leader. It needs to be someone with absolute zero connections to silicon valley.

A third Labour MP is standing down, Virendra Sharmai, Ealing Southall

Has anyone ever watched one of those programmes about young recruits into the military. Half of them aren't up to it and most of them get let go during training.

And those are the ones that actively wanted to do it! And are paid about 19k.

He's 77, so understandable that he might want to go now.

LlynTegid · 27/05/2024 19:01

I noticed that they had one teenager in Chesham who supports his local team. Never knew Chesham was a suburb of Greater Manchester.

fabio12 · 27/05/2024 19:02

I'm also wondering about kids with SEN, those in hospital, emergency situations such as parent terminal...will they have to get a sick note? Who is going to be in charge of corroborating Johnny is off with a broken arm when most of us can't even see our medical records on NHS apps we have agreed to sell our soul to? Do they have a right to this information? Are they going to force people with crippling anxiety disorders to be around strangers or learn to drop bombs on people? My friend's son breezily told me this afternoon he was considering taking his dad's nationality if the Tories get in, all thanks to this policy! Madness.

fabio12 · 27/05/2024 19:03

So good they used the same photo twice?

BestIsWest · 27/05/2024 19:17

Kevin Brennan (Labour, Cardiff West) also standing down.

Cheguevarahamster · 27/05/2024 19:34

Andy Street not standing as Tory MP.

Tom Larkin (Sky)

Day 5 so far:

  • Outgoing Tory MP backing Reform to win her seat
  • CCHQ accidentally emailed senior Tory MPs saying they weren't working hard enough
  • An actual minister criticised the party's first big policy announcement
  • The same minister has gone on holiday to Greece
  • A Tory peer and ex minister has said the 'majority' of Conservative MPs are going to lose their seats
  • Two ministers have not ruled out punishing parents if their 18yo's refuse national service

Why isn't he wearing a pair of his adidas trainers?

Wouldn't they be more suitable for soccer?

I think he got the memo they're now "uncool" thanks to his use of them previously?

Clearly not something that comes naturally to him. He's learning on the job. I use those terms loosely.

Ah, we can now see clearly the narrative as to why Sunak lost the election. Unfortunately everyone who was supposed to be supporting him did not work hard enough, and did not believe in THE PLAN.

Nothing to do with Sunak. Hardly his fault he is such an inspirational leader that even ministers can't be bothered to campaign.

HannibalHeyes · 27/05/2024 20:00

The Conservative Party have now managed to fill all of their empty seats...

the80sweregreat · 27/05/2024 20:03

That is funny.
Anyone have any idea when the first ' tv debate' might be?
Might distract from National service talk and football.
