"As the Financial Times reports, yesterday Rishi Sunak said that people who have done national service could get preference when applying for university or for an apprenticeship, or in interviews for the civil service’s fast-track programme. He said:
We want to make sure Britain’s future generations can get the most out of national service. That’s why we’re looking into ways it can open doors they wouldn’t otherwise get in work or education"

How do you get preference when applying for university when you are at University?

Does he not know that 18 year olds are at University?

Surely if universities want to retain their academic status and reputations, they will have to continue to offer places based solely on academic qualifications and potential, not whether the applicant has ticked the right National Service boxes? If they have a choice between candidate X with a string of A*s at A level but no national service, or candidate Y who scraped three Cs at A level but spent 12 weekends dossing around on the beaches doing lifeguard duty, surely they'e going for X every time?

What If the young person had signed up to the military when they were 16 and were on active duty abroad?

Saucery · 27/05/2024 15:32

The National Service bollocks is annoying me far more than it should, considering it is never going to happen.

Me too. It speaks of a contempt and loathing for the young that deeply offends me. The young are our future. My house was a refuge for young people when my kids were growing up, mainly because our town is a pretty homophobic place, and some of my kids' friends couldn't be themselves at home. So I have known a disproportionate number of teens.

And despite the fact that some of them came from some really tough backgrounds, had issues, weren't the easiest of people, they were all deep down really lovely people who have come good growing up. The hate for young people makes me angry.

They really are trying to piss everyone off Confused

It seems so unworkable and ridiculous that I am starting to agree with whoever it was that suggested it was/is a 🐿️ to distract us from something else Hmm

I like the weasel words in answer to the question about national service for people with caring commitments "The Royal Commission will aim to ensure everyone can take part". Surely young people providing care are already effectively doing far more by way of national service than anything prescribed under this lunatic scheme? Or perhaps they're being less gung-ho about this because they realised it would costs a fortune to put alternative care arrangements in place?

Will foreign countries extradite people who decide to flee go abroad ?

A really good friend - RIP 😢- married a guy who fled the Vietnam draft in the early 70s. He's still here (as indeed are many US refugees).

itsgettingweird · 27/05/2024 15:53

"The Royal Commission will aim to ensure everyone can take part"

Why are they trying to sell it like a privilege and not a compulsory waste of time?

Maybe they should let Truss take the reins again for maximum effect.

SerendipityJane · 27/05/2024 15:58

Well, if nothing else, this has shafted the "knows what a woman is " contingent right royally. There goes acres of newsprint they can't access because of a totally fantastical load of codswallop that is never going to see the light of day.

Clearly someone at CCHQ knows how to keep debates in Labours favour going.

Apparently parents of an under nines football team in Chesham got an “emergency” WhatsApp asking them to take their children down for a photo opportunity with Sunak and they all refused.

Last night it emerged Greg Hands had been banned from using a parents WhatsApp group at his son’s school to send out political messages about VAT on school fees https://x.com/gabriel_pogrund/status/1794787580212391981?s=61&t=xKCXjKa1-S6Ks0nSd_LXGg

Looks like they found some willling parents players

@DuncinToffee that definitely looks like a few children of several different ages rather than a team! I don’t think he has helped himself by displaying his footballing “skills” 😂

Interestingly suggested to an ex Tory supporting colleague.

They've suddenly realised that Starmer actually plays football, and is a genuine Arsenal fan.

So that looks like they are trying to annoy a lot of people.

prettybird · 27/05/2024 17:20

So what difference does suspending an MP make, when they've already said that they're stepping down and Parliament is being dissolved??? Confused

I don't even live in the country and it's giving me rage.

At the expense of time discussing the NHS for example. It is a reminder to those who might be forgetting basic morals not to vote Conservative.

Footage of a man who has never kicked a football in his life pretending he knows what he's doing. Bit like when he cosplays being PM.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 27/05/2024 17:32

So if leaving the country for a year doesn't exempt you from national service, how long does? Or do all British 18 year olds living abroad have to do it?

So people go to University one year later then. One year less to be in a job that earns towards a pension.

Or they go to a university abroad and never come back to the UK if at all possible.

the80sweregreat · 27/05/2024 17:33

Boris Johnson used to love a sporty opportunity or ( even better ) wearing a high vis.
He was never out of one at one stage.

Secretly , politicians must hate all this fakery I bet having to talk to people and pretend to like stuff. I know I would.
(Do they still ' kiss babies ' ? I can imagine that's not encouraged anymore. Different times)
