@HelenaJustina wow taking children to London! You are brave. I once took a group of children to the theatre, none of them had been before and I was thrilled. It was a group of 15 7 - 11 yr old. On the coach one of them shouted, “Wow look, Meat Mart,” as we passed a local wholesale butchers. They got very excited about that. They enjoyed the show, which was a mixture of live actors and shadow puppetry; it was excellent, and I was thankful that Meat Mart hadn’t been the highlight of the day! 😂

I’ve managed to do my online Ocado order today, with smoked salmon, prawns and calamari as treats!

@Mumtobabyhavoc poor Havoc it’s quite scary having water squirted in your face. I think those guns should be used at home and not in public. Hopefully the parents will take more notice of their own offspring.

@mathanxiety I love trying new flavours of crisps. I recently got some haggis and cracked pepper ones. I love haggis but really wouldn’t have been able to tell that flavour, they were just meaty. Oh I tried some Brussel sprouts flavoured a couple of Christmases ago. I love sprouts, but that was a step too far for me 😖

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/07/2024 19:13

Braved same splash park last night with Havoc. I think the effects of previous day were lingering as Havoc's enthusiasm wasn't there, wasn't keen to mix with the kids and kept asking to go over to playground instead. I'm a bit sad about this, but am going to take dc out to a different one today.

Sounds like a good grocery shop, Uman. What time should I be there for dinner? I'll bring dessert. 😋
Did you/London survive the children Helena? 😀

Heat is forecasted through next week, but mid/high 20's mostly. Temp indoors was a solid 30c last night. Kept doors open til midnight; a fan in every room in front of window to bring in cooler air, but was quite worried for dc. Had cold wet cloth on baby's back for a bit and on back of Havoc's neck. It's cool in here now and temp to be 2c cooler today at 28c.

DandyDandylion · 10/07/2024 21:34

I’ll never forget seeing my teacher standing with one leg on the train and one on the platform when a sixth form pupils lost track of time at a London station. In the end one teacher stayed back to find the missing student and they got the next train. Hopefully @HelenaJustina will have better luck.
I have been squirted in the face from point blank range but I was at a panto so I guess I was fair game. Hopefully Havoc will forget it after a few more visits.

HelenaJustina · 10/07/2024 21:46

I did have better luck… I counted them all out, and I counted them all back in. Quite a few hadn’t been to London before, and we had a mile walk from the train station to the event, which was fortunately uneventful.

Penguinsa · 10/07/2024 22:05

Well done to your little cat on training your new SIL MissC

Well done on London school trip Helena

Just done 3 hours gardening with DH and filled a green bin and second one we already have enough for just have to put it in. I uncovered a whole garden stepping stone path from years back. Also planted 2 hydrangeas and 2 other plants for part shade and tidied up the plants. The old fence panels are still in the garden but they will be taken on Friday. Its looking much better in there, a lot of garden to do, we are having to go through every inch of it. More plants arriving on Thursday and DD is also arriving back with her boyfriend though his Dad is picking them up.

Got called today re my DIEP reconstruction surgery, been waiting since Dec 21, and now have an 6th August date though they said could be cancelled. Pre appointment on 17th July. Excited. Just having a Chinese takeaway as its late.

bizzey · 10/07/2024 22:07

Happy household here ⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽ ! 😂😂...

We are in the Final !!!!

sproutsandparsnips · 10/07/2024 23:11

Bizzey yes excellent news for England!
Fingers crossed the surgery goes ahead Penguinsa.
Helena glad everyone who went came back! Lovely to hear from you.
Miss what a beautiful, serene pictre.
Havoc that is hot! Do you have ac? We have had approx 3 days of heat this year, DS2's attic room is exceptionally hot in any heat and we finally got an AC unit as it can be unbearable up there, just in time for the heat to disappear.
DS1 has gone for a 3 day summer school, staying in university accommodation and attending workshops etc. I hope he gets plenty out of it.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/07/2024 03:07

Sprouts, no AC as summers never used to get that hot, just the odd stretch here and there. With temps trending up (way up!) it's time to consider it. Adds to the problem, though, doesn't it? 🤔

Spent the afternoon at the kids' wading pool at a local park. Was very calm! Lots of 2-3 year olds in the mix, water guns not allowed. Will be going back. 🤗

It feels so much nicer just 2c cooler today! Caught the weather report on tv the other day and they said we're in a heat dome. We had a brutal and deadly one in '21 with over 600 deaths. First time I'd heard that term, heat dome. Temps went up to 40c if I remember correctly. It just feels like a hot stretch, not a heat dome, especially since there is bit of breeze. 🤷‍♀️

Penguinsa, that's quite a bit of gardening you do! Must be stunning!
Dandy, never been to panto... have just seen it in movies on tv.
Helena, glad everyone survived. 😀

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/07/2024 05:59

It's mercifully cooler this evening. Took Havoc to exchange a new pair of shoes ordered for a larger size then stopped at playground on the way home for a bit. Feeling super tired now amd ready for bed, actually. It's amazing how heat is so exhausting.

DandyDandylion · 11/07/2024 07:51

Panto is fantastic, can be very random and you need a sense of humour but you will never laugh so hard. I guess it is a bit unique to the uk and is only really funny if you are in the room with it going on around you. Watching it on tv I imagine it would be very corny and a bit cringey.
I suspect younger children are easier to take on school trips, in the sense that you know not to take your eyes off them for a second.
@Penguinsa well done on your garden archeology, did you know that path was there or was it a surprise? Hope the surgery all goes well, must be a relief to finally have a date in the diary.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/07/2024 14:34

Dandy, your comment that panto might be cringey viewed on tv made me google.

"Outside of the British Isles, the word "pantomime" is often understood to mean miming, rather than the theatrical form described here.[1]"

I meant I was aware of it but not seen a panto movie. 😂 You and I meant very different things.

Dandy, now I've found this and have put it in my calendar to check out! 😄

Anotherdayanotherhangover · 11/07/2024 21:15

Havoc I wish we were getting hotter temperatures- we've just had rain, rain and more rain. Tomorrow's forecast for me is showers all day and max temperature of 14 degrees.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/07/2024 22:47

Another, that's depressing for July. I just want a happy medium, not hot, not cold. 30c indoors is quite uncomfortable....🥵

Penguinsa · 12/07/2024 03:23

Thanks Sprouts Hope DS1 enjoys summer school. Sounds interesting.

Hope it cools down Havoc We have pretty cool temps here this year which I prefer but so much rain. The garden is improving but more to do.

Thanks Dandy When we bought the house the path (stepping stones) was largely covered in plants / grass and estate agent said this house looks like the garden needs work - it was a beautiful garden but the lady was in her 90s and her son used to come to mow lawn etc but worked and it was too much for him to do. I looked at photo from estate agents and it showed a path, must have been taken a year or so earlier. DH was amazed how easily I uncovered the path but all the stones are roughly same apart and if you felt you could feel it was harder and then you pull on moss etc and reveal a stone. Cutting ivy the other day I found a statue.

I filled in about half of a 24 page form for DS yesterday and also organised a special collection for this morning - I think I am equivalent of nesting due to looming surgery trying to sort house and garden before it on 6 August. DH will also be away for 8 days before it in France. DH was 🤔why have you done this at such short notice. I ordered a new metal garden table and chairs with padded seats for 4 (aluminium) so we can sit out and enjoy garden and for collection I put in for 9 sacks of rubbish, the old battered garden bench, table and 2 chairs. Its a bit of a race again time as it has to be out for 6am and I just ordered it yesterday. The bench, table, 2 chairs, 3 bags of garden cuttings are out and I have made 2 more sacks from the house so we have 4 more sacks to do in the early hours though it doesn't matter too much and need to put my 2 sacks out. DH says he's doing stuff from garden but hope its light enough. They often don't arrive until 8am or so.

DD arrived back from Kefalonia and had a nice time.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/07/2024 08:48

Penguinsa, must be so satisfying getting so much done. Good for you! 🤗
I'm keeping my fingers crossed your surgery doesn't get bumped and that things work our for your ds. 🤞🩷

Baby was 28 weeks yesterday so we went out for cake in the evening. I stress it was yesterday, because it was a late night with dc and it's now after 12:30am and I'm still up having put dc to bed, had a bath/washed my hair and ate the left-over cake sitting here on the couch in the living room, semi darkness and just enjoying a cooler evening and listening to the sounds of the night. And scrolling. 😂
Cake was a slice of earl grey with lemon icing which was very good and a slice of birthday cake which has the milk chocolate icing.

Deathraystare · 12/07/2024 12:54

@@HelenaJustina

Ah yes, Helena. You may have counted them out and in but were they the same kids???!!!!!

@bizzey

I asked one of the Philippino porters who they would be supporting and they said Spain. I said under the Tories he would have been kicked out! He was in a work sweepstake but got Hungary and they went out earlier. Another porter (Somalian but born in Holland) was obvs voting for Holland!

I was rather surprised that two giants - Germany and Brazil are already out.

Not that footie is my thing actually.

@Mumtobabyhavoc

All this talk of cake! I would love to make some but there is only me, not enough room in kitchen for equipment and that is when I can get in the shared kitchen, plus I am overweight and diabetic!

You will love the panto. Very British tradition but others love it too. Although you may think it is just aimed at kids there is some adult humour but will go over the kids heads (although they will still laugh!). It is one of the rare occasions when kids can scream and shout especially when they are encouraged to say "look behind you!"

MissConductUS · 12/07/2024 17:00

Penguinsa, good luck with your surgery. I always get antsy if I have one coming up. There have been too many in the last few years.

Havoc, have you looked into having AC installed? It's not difficult to do for most houses.

I'm leaving work early to do some shopping. I'm not sure when DD is returning from Virginia, possibly early next week.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/07/2024 17:12

Havoc just told me, "You are magic and kind." 🥹

Gotta get coffe and ready for soccer now.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/07/2024 17:41

Sipping coffee now. Realized it was not Saturday, so no soccer. Then thought it was Monday and, "Did I forget to take Havoc to soccer two days ago (on Saturday)?" 😲Then, wait, wait, what day is it? Oh, Friday... ok. Whew. 😅
Plan is Costco, lunch then park with dc. Because it's Friday. 🤗

HelenaJustina · 12/07/2024 21:44

The heat is getting to your brain Havoc

Death no one said they had to be the same children, just the same number… ours were a nice bunch so I wasn’t tempted to swap any.

Another 14 hour day today at work due to the Summer Music Concert. Music has taken a long time to recover post-COVID in primary schools, but our pupils were fantastic this evening.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/07/2024 05:26

Yep, must be the heat.... Both dc are asleep now which is great and I'm getting laundry done! 😁

MissConductUS · 13/07/2024 16:46

Havoc, I'm guessing that you're in the northern edges of this heat dome:

Western Heat Wave Tracker: The All-Time Record Highs And Record-Long Hot Streaks

We've been fortunate, it's been hot here (32C or so daily highs), but not as bad as that.

DH picked up a bargain at the posh Italian supermarket. They have fresh, local swordfish for $12.99 per pound so that's what's going on the grill tonight for us. DS will have a steak. When we had our honeymoon at a beach resort (Block Island, RI) we had swordfish with a Parmesan butter sauce, so he's going to make that tonight as well.

Likely, Miss. it looks to be getting hotter again in next few days as well. Enjoy your dinner. I haven't had swordfish, but I was marlin fishing once and although I didn't catch one, someone from the group did and it was a very good dinner done a few ways including ceviche which I had for the first time and loved.

Puttered last night sorting a closet and doing laundry; and have stripped my bed already this morning.

Had a lovely cold foam/cold milk latte with croissant, chocolate spread and strawberries. Off to soccer shortly because it is Saturday.

Lemonsandlemonade · 13/07/2024 20:39

Wow Helena fair play taking children into London.

I Agree re music and covid and primary schools. Thankfully for the children the school I'm in has a super music department and talented staff.

went to a fund day today. DS tried mini archery and had a go at a mini harp. The harp lady said he was good at it.

Wish the weather would warm here!
