What fucking fresh hell is this?

I came down with a headcold 4 weeks ago. By March the 29th it was much more than a headcold but not a flu either. It felt more like a sinus infection and I went to my GP. She said it was a chest infection. Gave me 5 days of antibiotics. I felt reasonably ok-ish with them but still sore and not well.

4 weeks from the onset of all of this and I am still not better. My cough has cleared but my throat is sore again and my ears are sore and I am still nearly deaf. And I am not getting any better.

This is not a normal headcold. Not any more.

It just won't go away.

4 weeks and counting. Does anyone else have the same thing?

Yes. I tested negative for covid so assumed it was flu. Really awful headache and eye ache - just lay in a dark room for two days and was exhausted for a week. Also body aches. DC had a fever.

We're OK-ish after 1.5 weeks although still coughing and I feel permanently thirsty/sore throat.

GiggleHoot · 13/03/2024 12:57

It's covid. Repeated infections mean your immune system will be shot to pieces. Why don't you test?

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 13/03/2024 14:53

I use Dymista nasal spray which is a combination steroid and antihistamine. In Australia it. Hanged a couple of months ago from being a prescription medicine to a pharmacist one, not sure about the UK, but it really helps my sinuses.

My DH did- turned out to be thyroid cancer

You and your husband must have a great GP to find throid cancer from a headcold. I hope all goes well with his treatment going forward.

I started raging at paracetamol today and I had to go to my GP as an urgent case because I was going to start taking half boxes of paracetamol and ibuprofen at a time and I know that could likely be an overdose but I wasn't doing it to unalive myself but just to get this to stop and go away.

My GP saw me urgently and prescribed steroids and antibiotics. I showed her the bag of over the counter stuff that I am taking and nothing was working for me.

There's something seriously wrong with this fucking god damn dose. How it is never going away.

If I don't see an improvement by Saturday - I am going to start upping my game with over the counter stuff and just start taking packets of medicine at a time.

I was fucked for 3 weeks thinking it was the worst headcold but turned out to be sinusitis and I got 2 weeks of antibiotics. It still took a further 5 weeks to actually feel better (although I could lift my head again after day 3 of antibiotics)

Feel better soon xx

Marshmallow87 · 13/03/2024 23:56

I had this, I became unwell first week January and that’s me only just semi over it all. I ended up with pneumonia and sinusitis. Genuinely the sickest I’ve ever been in my whole life. I had 5 rounds of antibiotics and 3 rounds of steroids to finally shift it. Was off work for 5 weeks. Horrific. Tested negative for covid.

I have it too - cough, headaches, ear pain and weirdly a raging thirst and constant tinnitus. Both of which are driving me insane.

Coconut water for the thirst.

I would love to hear of there's any experts willing to step up and talk and highlight what this is. Headcolds going on for weeks and months for some people and developing deeper. It's not right.

Thanks, I will try this.

My DH has had this since just after Christmas. It will start to get better and then get worse again. He's been to the GP who said his chest was clear and it was just a virus. But I've never seen anything like this TBH, I'm pretty sure he's got Whooping cough, as he makes a horrible whooping sound when he coughs and he struggles to get his breath back afterwards. It's bloody awful.

RueTroussevache · 14/03/2024 01:51

I don't feel nearly so alone now. I've been sick since before Christmas, and just finished my second course of antibiotiques, for what was probably à sinus infection.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 14/03/2024 03:03

We've a few people at work that have it/have had it and someone I know also had it and was off work a couple of weeks. I think she said hers was viral plus a bad chest infection although i can't remember for definite. I'm really hoping I can avoid it although I can guarantee if I get it. It'll be right on the time I go on holiday

I don't usually have hayfever but I will give anti histamine a go.

I have had the same. When it hadn’t gone after a course of antibiotics I went back to the GP. as I had sinus pain, ear ache etc. She recommended using steam inhalation and taking antihistamines

Nat6999 · 14/03/2024 03:44

I started with it October 13th last year, it took me until beginning of February to feel anywhere near normal. I had 2 rounds of antibiotics, had to have the doctor out twice who diagnosed pneumonia. I was ill right through Christmas with massive sores in my mouth & on my lips. The sore throat was terrible, it felt like everything I ate was sticking in my throat, I ended up living on jelly & ice cream with tons of drinks with ice in them & taking calpol as I couldn't manage to swallow tablets, something that I normally don't have a problem with. Drink as much as you can, take paracetamol, inhale something like Olbas oil in a bowl of hot water, sleep propped up & use Vicks on the soles of your feet under socks & on your chest & throat at night. Sleep when you can.

My ex sil has whooping cough at the moment, she is 58 & from what I've been told by ds is very poorly.

I have it too, with the thirst! Reminds me of when I was pregnant and had gestational diabetes but hadn’t been diagnosed yet. Actually took my blood sugar a few times this week. I’m not sick enough to justify staying home/in bed but I’m really not well either. 🫠

Scorchio84 · 14/03/2024 04:39

Same boat here, going into my fourth week, same as PP's not sick enough to be off work & tbh I'm not really up for paying €65 plus whatever the fee for the inevitable antibiotics, which by all accounts aren't helping others? But it's definitely draining me & the cough has been so bad that it's hurt my lung & ribs on one side

I've been downing Bronco, a cough syrup & it has helped but realistically I can't just keep taking it

& joy of all joys my OH is now on board 🙈but luckily my son is so far unaffected

QueenRainbow · 14/03/2024 05:46

I am just going into month 4 of an evil cough that makes me vomit and go blue around my mouth and fingers. It’s so bad I am vomiting and whistling when coughing and struggling to breathe, my health has been horrendous the last year though and I had to have a major blood transfusion in December. The consultants/Specialists/ Doctors can’t figure out what’s wrong with me. Had all sorts of investigations with no firm answers as yet. Totally fed up with it now. Best they say is because my iron levels are so low I am struggling to heal. Potentially Crohn’s with a side of whooping cough (eye roll) I just know I am totally fed up now, exhausted and sore all over.

NotFastButFurious · 14/03/2024 05:57

I had Covid at the end of last year that started off feeling like a cold and then became ongoing sinus pain and a hideous cough for weeks.

Did you do a Covid test? By chance I was given a fresh box of free tests by work. I then got ill with what I assumed was a fluey cold. I had awful pain in my sinuses, bad earache, sore throat and very feverish for 2 or 3 days. On the 4th day I remembered I had the Covid tests and got a whacking great Positive.

The only thing that’s helped is steam inhalations (even if you don’t feel blocked up), showers (again, the steam helps) and early nights. I still don’t feel right 3 weeks on. Friends who’ve had it, say it takes 4-6 weeks to feel normal again.

Oh, I also took Sambucol and that helped too as it seemed to knock the bastard virus on the head a bit and help it go away.

violetcuriosity · 14/03/2024 06:34

Yes I've been ill since 1st Feb. Baby started nursery the week before. I'm not sure if I've had 4 different viruses because I have felt almost better 3 times and then got worse again. The second one was tonsillitis that I got sent for urgent bloods about and had a call 4 hours later saying I was borderline sepsis. It's been hell, I can't remember the last time I felt normal and not tired, I'm taking vitamin D every day, I was also taking a probiotic but then got worried about it making the antibiotics less effective somehow 🤣.

Palmsun · 13/03/2024 06:35

It's actually unreal whatever the fuck this is. It gaslightjng piece of shit of a virus because you feel well one moment just to be not well again the next moment. It coming and going. It's on and off.

I felt better yesterday but by evening time the sore throat hit me hard again with phelgm and mucus heavy feeling at the back of my throat and ears.

Oh god this is me now, and the children. It has passed my husband by, so whatever tablets he is taking, is making him immune.
Just not sure what it is, high blood pressure, statins or something

Jifmicroliquid · 14/03/2024 07:06

I had this. I even relented and went to the doctors as my ear pain was so bad. I had a huge build up of fluid behind my eardrum that took a long while to clear. I was unwell for a good 3 weeks. Been ok for 2 and now have another virus. I never get things so close together normally.
