What fucking fresh hell is this?

I came down with a headcold 4 weeks ago. By March the 29th it was much more than a headcold but not a flu either. It felt more like a sinus infection and I went to my GP. She said it was a chest infection. Gave me 5 days of antibiotics. I felt reasonably ok-ish with them but still sore and not well.

4 weeks from the onset of all of this and I am still not better. My cough has cleared but my throat is sore again and my ears are sore and I am still nearly deaf. And I am not getting any better.

This is not a normal headcold. Not any more.

It just won't go away.

4 weeks and counting. Does anyone else have the same thing?

Yes, taking ibuprofen almost every day. Just won't go away, have had a cough, sore throat or blocked nose for months.

GameChangingNameChange · 14/03/2024 11:43

Could be covid, or the fact that covid has fucked up our immune systems.

Hope you feel better soon OP.

IslaIska · 14/03/2024 11:48

I am going to try using first defence every day for a week. Will report back if it works.

It's what is going around at the moment.
I got it the first week of Feb. Felt crap for a few days, then got worse, full on flu and in bed for 2 days. Then felt crappy as it moved into my sinuses. Went to the GP for sinus infection meds, that took another week for me to feel good. Had maybe a week of feeling okish and then got another sinus infection which lasted 2 weeks - only cleared last weekend.
My husband is sick since last Thursday. Same thing, felt crappy for a few days then was wiped out in bed with a flu/high temps Monday & Tues. Wednesday it went to his chest and we woke us all up at 4am coughing this morning and he just stayed up since then as he couldn't stop coughing. He went into the GP this morning. He's nowhere near better. 3 kids also have it. My 88yr old mom lives with us and she's flying thank goodness!

concernedchild · 14/03/2024 11:50

I have this, my family has this. My mum has pneumonia now. I'm fucked, totally. It's so hard

C152 · 14/03/2024 11:50

Oh no, this sounds like what my DS has, except he has chicken pox on top of it. His Drs have tested for multiple things and said it's not bacterial, so they've taken him off anitbiotics and he's on IV antiviral medication for the chicken pox now.

Chickpea17 · 14/03/2024 11:52

Had mine for nine weeks, only just started to ease off.

Lifeomars · 14/03/2024 11:55

I started with what I thought was going to develop into a cold on around 15 January, felt a bit woolly-headed and tired but was able to cope. Then the cold symptoms faded away and I started with the most horrendous cough I have ever had, coughing til I puked, felt like my ribs were going to break and stopping me sleeping. Then got an eye infection which I needed anti-biotic onionment for . Eyes cleared up over a few days but the cough lasted and lasted and I am still very tired and a bit chesty. It's now nearly two months since the initial symptoms, really feel for anyone who is similarly affected

I had it for 4 weeks before Christmas. And now it's back. I can't bear it. I have an in-person work event tomorrow. I'm supposed to be fucking chairing it but would feel dreadful if I gave it to anyone.

What do people think? Should I go and wear a facemask or will I look like a twat?

Of course! If you absolutely have to be there in person, why not try to reduce the risk to others? Logically, what makes you more of a twat - reducing risk to the workforce or increasing it?

Fantapops · 14/03/2024 12:52

My friend's nutritionist suggested garlic tablets.

Ohhh yes I was putting garlic in pretty much everything I ate too. Definitely helped.

Well I puked up my cup of team this morning so have stayed in bed. This is fucking miserable

AgnesX · 14/03/2024 13:20

Something similar from mid Feb, still have the cough from hell (sounds dreadful) and my muscles ache. So fed up of being under the weather and struggling.

Somanyquestionstoaskaboutthis · 14/03/2024 13:26

I’m on week four. Started as a horrendous head cold and sore throat now more of a chest infection and head cold. I have stabbing pains between my ribs from coughing, presumably muscle strain and feel like I’m wearing a too tight bra. The pharmacist said it’s viral and the doctors won’t see me.

I’ve had to go to work throughout as I can’t afford to lose pay so I’ve basically been at work or in bed for a month.

passthepenguin · 14/03/2024 13:29

I’ve heard about a so-called 100 day cold that’s been going around. Lots of people I know have had it.

MorningSunshineSparkles · 14/03/2024 13:35

Threatening to overdose yourself is not going to make it go away. I really hope you’re feeling better soon but it might be time to speak to your doctor about your mental health alongside your illness.

Clarinet1 · 14/03/2024 13:36

Palmsun · 13/03/2024 22:58

I started raging at paracetamol today and I had to go to my GP as an urgent case because I was going to start taking half boxes of paracetamol and ibuprofen at a time and I know that could likely be an overdose but I wasn't doing it to unalive myself but just to get this to stop and go away.

My GP saw me urgently and prescribed steroids and antibiotics. I showed her the bag of over the counter stuff that I am taking and nothing was working for me.

There's something seriously wrong with this fucking god damn dose. How it is never going away.

If I don't see an improvement by Saturday - I am going to start upping my game with over the counter stuff and just start taking packets of medicine at a time.

Please, please whatever you do, DON’T take
more than the recommended dose of Paracetamol (8 in 24 hours) as this can cause serious, irreparable liver damage or even kill you. I have a feeling there may be a similar limit for Ibuprofen.

RockStarship · 14/03/2024 13:45

My dh is the same. He got a cold around 6/7 weeks ago. It keeps almost disappearing and then coming back with a vengeance. He's constantly blocked up, feels tired, coughing up a lot of mucus, feels pressure building up in his sinuses. He's had two rounds of antibiotics which seem to work quickly but within a day or so of finishing the course the symptoms rear their head again.

Somanyquestionstoaskaboutthis · 14/03/2024 13:46

I’m sleeping by taking 2 night nurse tablets, 2 ibuprofen and my usual antihistamine at bedtime. During the day I alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen. Don’t take more than the limits OP, you can really mess up your body.

I have had two negative covid tests during it so less they don’t show a new strain it’s not that. I’ve certainly got the exhaustion I had with covid.

I haven’t fancied my Mother’s Day chocolates which is concerning.

ScrambledSmegs · 14/03/2024 13:48

I get recurrent sinusitis plus other wonderful ENT issues and can share what helps me, besides the usual OTC meds. Obviously it's not the same thing but worth a try to ease symptoms.

  1. Vitamin D. - a high dose, 1000iu at least. I take up to 3000iu (under advisement) because I'm broken. I prefer Vitabiotics but I'm sure others are ok.

  2. Beconase nasal spray morning and night. Helps reduce any inflammation.

  3. Sinus drainage massage ie massage around your ears and down the sides of your neck, there are videos of how to do sinus drainage massage on YouTube and while it's not a miracle cure it does provide relief.

  4. Anti-inflammatory diet. It's helped me a lot, to the extent that I think I know my body is responding to the early stages of infection when I start craving kale and grapefruit. But don't eat grapefruit if you're on antibiotics!

  5. Hot drinks, lots of lovely herbal teas. There's a lovely green tea with turmeric (anti-inflammatory!) that I drink a lot of.

I really hope you all feel better soon, it sounds utterly miserable Flowers

JustDiscoveredBueno · 14/03/2024 14:10

@HelenDamnation1 hope 'team' was a typo! Hope you get better soon.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 14/03/2024 14:13

I've realised since reading the latest posts on this thread that what I had as a teenager was sinusitis. My nana actually had an operation/procedure on her sinuses.

I think I was fairly lucky as mine cleared up by themselves but my god the pain - my whole head/eyes/cheeks used to throb with the pain, holding my head over a bathroom sink with Olbas oil and then the relief when the yellow/green snot came out and meant your head finally cleared and felt better!

facepalmdaily · 14/03/2024 15:01

I had this before Christmas, it lasted weeks.

Springcat · 14/03/2024 15:02

I've a horrible feeling I'm a week in to the same thing ..
Thought it was COVID but I've no tests

Timeforanotheraliasnow · 14/03/2024 15:03

Mine was about 4 weeks, eventually cleared with menthol inhaler and fisherman's friends.

BusyMummy001 · 14/03/2024 15:06

DH and DD both had something similar. 4 weeks on and DH finally feeling a bit better, but DD is still suffering from a really painful sore throat and cough that clears up for a few days and then comes back again - and still feeling like crap in between. Have heard loads of people have had it.

Not sure if it’s a new flu thing or the current iteration of Covid (DS and I have not had whatever this is, but we both had covid several times badly so wondering if we’ve built up immunity 🤷🏻‍♀️). Didn’t bother testing because can’t get the test kits easily and I couldn’t be bothered to queue in the chemist…
