Taylor Swift

Please can somebody explain the hype?

I have friends (I am 50) who were seriously sad when they didn't get concert tickets (not in UK) and others who did, who were practically celebrating.

I don't get it. Don't want to ask for fear of looking like a twit.

For context, I have a 16yo DD and she just rolls her eyes and says wouldn't be caught dead at a TS concert. So no help there.

There's some sort of weird suspicion around her and I think that has helped cultivate the uber commuted fans.

Someone up thread saying that anyone who doesn't rate her is shut down by her or her team - what now? To my knowledge she has hit back at untruths and unpleasantness towards her. No one is shutting down anyone who doesn't like her music. What they do argue against is the much trotted out 'immature lyrics', 'average musician' etc. People are free to like what they like. But not liking someone doesn't mean they don't have talent. And that's what lots of her fans will rally against, because it's insulting of Taylor and by extension her fans.

I think she's great, I love the story telling in some of her music and then other tracks are just good fun, I think she's refreshing, clever and seems nice, which is a pleasant change in todays world! DD (20) is a huge fan, she and I are going to the Era's tour in the summer and I can't wait 😊

If you like storytelling may I suggest Brandon Flowers/The Killers.

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 11/02/2024 22:43

@Wasbedeudetetdas are you ever actually going to have the courage of your convictions and mention the actual name of a single one of these other artists that you're so passionate about? Who knows, maybe we'd like to support them, too?

(At least you've stopped referring to TS as 'the product' though. Baby steps.)

@Wasbedeudetetdas love the Killers and Brandon!

The whole “she only writes songs about her exes” is so misogynistic. People never say this about male musicians who do exactly the same thing.

It's not relevant who I like personally, but funnily enough I just suggested one directly above this (in relation to storytellers).
Last reply to you. It's tedious.

I've seen The Killers twice, and Brandon has an entirely different kind of stage presence. They are not comparable.

One of the most amazing gigs I ever saw was Portishead at Glastonbury. Beth Gibbons suffers with stage fright. She barely moves but she touches your soul with her voice. I can love that and TS.

I bet Brandon F wouldn't diss her.

That's not one of my issues with her.
Loads of folk write about their exes.

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 11/02/2024 22:46

Yes I saw that. Our posts crossed. Fair enough. Not my bag, and not exactly 'struggling either (!!) but OK.

I love BFs music.
I have no idea who he would 'diss' but his tastes, choices and lifestyle don't affect my enjoyment of the music. It's not him I love, it's his music.

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 11/02/2024 22:50

Nice edited post. I found your misogynistic characterisation of TS as a 'marketing project' and 'the product' with no personal agency or autonomy tedious too.

Anyhoo...moving on.

To clarify, I didn't suggest the Killers were struggling.
Edit - misrepresenting what someone said isn't clever, but hey ho....crack on.

EmmaEmerald · 11/02/2024 22:53

@TheSandHurtsMyFeelings

Please may I sing a favourite bit to you...

And I never don't cry
At the bar
Yeah, my sadness is contagious
I slur your name till someone puts me in a car
I've stopped receiving invitations.

That song hit me as hard as Champagne Problems but she still made me laugh with that last line 😂

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 11/02/2024 22:56

@EmmaEmerald You know, of course, that people will now say what shit lyrics they are 😂

It makes me laugh a lot too, though!

WrenNatsworthy · 11/02/2024 22:58

I think you can do a degree in TS now.
I couldn't be arsed, mind.

I'm off to listen to a Stephen King audiobook. Night Swifties!

thedancingparrot · 11/02/2024 23:03

She is not the greatest singer to be fair (many popular singers are not), she is more of a country singer, which is where she started. I could not listen to her for long but admire her for writing her own songs (and she is a talented story teller), standing her ground and challenging the music industry on behalf of all other artists to get a fair deal. She seems to be able to handle herself with dignity and integrity which cannot be the same for many other artists.

EmmaEmerald · 11/02/2024 23:04

@WrenNatsworthy Thank you for flagging this up - I will see if the Melbourne Conference will have anything online.
Good night.

AdrianaLaCerva · 11/02/2024 23:07

I don’t think her fans care whether others like her music or not - it’s already hard enough to get tickets to her concerts. I can see why they get annoyed by the condescension though…her audience is middle aged mums and little girls, it’s all baffling hype blah blah blah. Why does her success annoy you OP?

blooblom · 11/02/2024 23:13

MissRheingold · 11/02/2024 21:35

No discernible talent and satanic element to her performances.

🤣🤣🤣

isthatmyage · 11/02/2024 23:21

OP they're are lots of articles on google re TS songwriting prowess.....for example, guess the writer....Shakespeare or Taylor Swift.....enough said, she is a really good lyricist and singer x

EmmaEmerald · 11/02/2024 23:31

The evocation of emotion is extraordinary

Supposed to be readying stuff for tomorrow but now caught in Maroon

How'd we end up on the floor anyway you say
Your roommate's cheap ass screw top rosé, that's how
I see you every day now

That's not even how it happened in my case, but that lyric affects me....
And my fucking legacy was...to leave

I actually rethought those lyrics after a poster commented on that

I like these discussions.

Why can't you read the op and respond accordingly? Please point out where I said her success annoys me.

I actually said I like her music and compared her following to beatle-mania.

Yes, I also find it fascinating. Hence my post.

I had zero intention to offend, belittle or be in anyway derogatory. I am genuinely interested in the mechanics of the hype. On the flip side it appears that quite a few posters are quite sensitive about the subject - to the point of making stuff up.
