Please can somebody explain the hype?

I have friends (I am 50) who were seriously sad when they didn't get concert tickets (not in UK) and others who did, who were practically celebrating.

I don't get it. Don't want to ask for fear of looking like a twit.

For context, I have a 16yo DD and she just rolls her eyes and says wouldn't be caught dead at a TS concert. So no help there.

What's with the mean attitude in some responses. Weird. It was just a question.

Something that's been puzzling me. Thought I'd ask... Thanks to the normal responders 🙂

@Motheranddaughter pleased for you getting tickets. We registered in 4 cities and didn't get through for any. Oldest DD was desperate to go (and I would have loved to as well)

mitogoshi · 11/02/2024 21:18

She's really good live, been twice before (red and 1989 tours)

I sort of get what the OP means in that I don't really understand why she's so much of a bigger superstar than anyone else. I don't mind her songs, have very little opinion on her personality but I find it interesting that there's a cult around her that's sort of been a slow burner. It's not a criticism of anyone who likes her at all. I just am intrigued by it!

Thank you. Exactly what I was trying to say.

I don’t get it either, I mean I don’t dislike her but..meh 🤷🏻‍♀️
Someone once said they imagined she was either the girl at school who was really into horses and a bit geeky or a huge bitch 😬

Her blooming friendship with Brittany Mahomes puts a question mark on her "excellent values" spin. Nobody's perfect I guess.

plus her dating an actual nazi racist and prioritising her convenience over the destruction of our planet and many other things.

I like her, and her music, but let's not pretend she's little miss perfect.

the80sweregreat · 11/02/2024 21:22

I think it's sweet that she grew up on a Christmas tree farm ! What a lovely childhood to have tbh

BobnLen · 11/02/2024 21:22

I wouldn't recognise anything of hers which probably means she is not as bad as Adele warbling away. The demograph that enjoys her music seems to be teen girls and their mothers of which I am neither

ducksinarow123 · 11/02/2024 21:25

I think in a time where a lot of "role models" are reality tv stars filled with Botox, fillers and never take a photo without a filter (yes I'm looking at you Kardashian's/Love Island etc) it's refreshing to see a natural woman, who has got to where she is through hard work and talent! Someone who sings, writes, and plays the songs but is also smart and principled and is happy to stand up to "the industry" and do what is right. Whether you like her music, her style or not, you have to respect Taylor Swift as a fierce feminist.

JamSandle · 11/02/2024 21:26

She's refreshing for the time.

lavagal · 11/02/2024 21:16

@PaperDoIIs I'm not aware of Brittany Murphy or what she's like. Do share-- I'm intrigued.

Brittany Mahones is the wife of a player that plays with Taylor's boyfriend.

When her BIL (brother of said player) was accused of sexual assault she posted on instagram in his defence.

"He is a human just trying to live his life and find his way and until you walk a day in his shoes (which no one ever will) you have no right to say sh-- about him," she continued. Below her initial response, Brittany added, "So it's best to just shut up."

The media are really hyping up the friendship between Taylor and Brittany. No idea if it's all genuine or not, but every single things is used as proof of them being BFF's.

It's just all a bit iffy and concerning. Hopefully just storm in a tea cup , over exaggerated media planted hype.

ohididntrealise · 11/02/2024 21:28

I didn't think I knew any Taylor Swift songs, but I've realised recently I do, just didn't know they were her.

She has loads of songs, and a lot of them are very catchy, some of them have quite impressively deep lyrics, which I believe she writes herself.

So that's part of it.

But I do feel that the "hype" is a lot to do with the younger generation feeling that they want to be "part of" something. They want something extraordinary to bond and unite them.

I do feel that the generation of young people at the moment are quite like this. They like hyperbole and extremes. They want people pigeonholed into "good" or "bad" and when someone is "good", they worship them.

They use the word "obsessed" a lot to indicate an interest. Being "obsessed" with someobody / something. Being mildly interested isn't enough anymore, everything has to be "extra", as they say.

So I do kind of feel like if it wasn't Taylor, it'd have been someone else.

She is undoubtedly a talented performer....but I think she has been very much right time right place, and people just jump on the bandwagon of being super fans because they want that connection with others.

lavagal · 11/02/2024 20:58

She writes her own songs, has excellent values, is very smart and genuinely is kind and a decent person. So different from all the Kardashian's and fake people out there at the moment - I'm hoping my daughter grows up to appreciate someone like Taylor swift

Exactly this.
She has far more class than a lot of the acts nowadays.
I know sex sells but the overt sexual displays from a lot of 'stars' are off putting and if I had a daughter I would rather her prefer Taylor Swift to a Kardashian or some of the performers who are barely dressed.....Little Mix for example.

Ribbonss · 11/02/2024 21:29

I think it’s really unusual to get such a talented, ‘sensible’ woman in the music industry who has successfully navigated all the superficial rubbish. She’s a great business woman and a fantastic song writer. She’s written songs for other stars including the excellent Little Big Town.

So I get all the hype but I think it’s quite sad that she’s possibly cut off a lot of her less affluent fans who can’t afford the sorts of prices the concert tickets were going for!

I do recognize her music and like it a lot more than Adele.

It's Beatles-esque.

Don’t forget her country music background. Country had a massive following in the states.

NerrSnerr · 11/02/2024 21:30

@ohididntrealise it's always been like this! I remember the utter heartbreak of many teenage girls when Take That broke up. It just didn't seem as all encompassing because there was no social media to follow their every move.

PaperDoIIs · 11/02/2024 21:31

@lavagal that being said, I feel incredibly sorry for her with the whole AI porn thing. So dehumanising and humiliating and I know she's fighting it, and I hope she wins.

I like her and her music. Seems like a decent person and savvy businesswoman.
A good role model some would say.
But totally agree the hype around her just now is ridiculous. Totally taking the focus from her nfl star boyfriend.
But the media is to blame for that, not her.

LunaNorth · 11/02/2024 21:33

Beatles-esque is a stretch.

I like Folklore, though. A couple of songs on there have given me a teary moment or two.

MissRheingold · 11/02/2024 21:35

No discernible talent and satanic element to her performances.
