Please can somebody explain the hype?

I have friends (I am 50) who were seriously sad when they didn't get concert tickets (not in UK) and others who did, who were practically celebrating.

I don't get it. Don't want to ask for fear of looking like a twit.

For context, I have a 16yo DD and she just rolls her eyes and says wouldn't be caught dead at a TS concert. So no help there.

i have tickets and never listened to her I won them I’m going to go as I like a night out and it’s something I’d never get to do any other time. It’s not that deep tattle is for low life’s with low energy conversations leave this to advice on issues

EmmaEmerald · 11/02/2024 23:38

@ChiefEverythingOfficer I tend to associate the word "hype" with things like a new phone coming out

I think TS attracts a lot of Beatles, Presley type mania but I'm thinking "hype" is the wrong word?

ChiefEverythingOfficer · 11/02/2024 23:40

Sure, mania is a good word too.

After the US leg of her tour ended, she gave her truck drivers $100,000 bonus, each. She gives others credit for their help. I would have love to see her tour.

VampireWeekday · 11/02/2024 23:43

I haven't read the full thread and admittedly don't listen to her music. But I think she's popular because she's the right balance between relatable and aspirational for teenage girls. She writes about heartbreak, flings, dreams, friendships and self belief in a way that really speaks to how those things feel at 13-17 years, which I think are her target demographic. 15 years ago the female singers were either entirely aspirational or really cool and creative, but not capturing emotions and experiences the way teenagers feel them.

I think that a good portion of people who don't like her, don't like her because they don't like not being the target demographic, and anyway there is a long history of things aimed at teenage girls being ridiculed as vacuous or low in quality, like they're too stupid to tell. Teenage girls are not stupid, they just experience thongs differently to adults. It's nice there's music to reflect some of it.

There's a strong theory that Taylor is neurodivergent and many of her lyrics resonate immensely with ND fans. The songs Mastermind and Mirrorball strongly hint at this. People who are ND tend to obsess or hyperfocus on things they love and TS had such a massive fanbase because she's created an entire universe that her fans can live inside. It's comparable to "fandoms" for pop culture books, movies, series or video games. Those are typical areas for autistic/ADHD hyperfocus.

Taylor is unique in the sense that her albums and her tendency to drop easter eggs and secrets is a substitute community for ND people who may not be into the more typical geekier fandoms. Virtually no other music artist has achieved this. There is zero fandom lore surrounding Olivia Rodrigo, Adele or Beyonce. They're all incredible artists but they don't generate the same type of frenzy when they drop a new music video or manage to get all their fans making friendship bracelets at their concerts.

The only comparable "fandom" music artist could be Melanie Martinez who inspires the same type of hyperobsession amongst her fans. However she's never been as fully mainstream or popular as TS.

I think she's ND too as is a family member.

Therefore I think the Celine Dion "snub" wasn't actually on purpose more of an overexcited thing & forgot to thank the prize giver in the moment.
Its's been explained to me (by family member) as I've forgotten 'what I should do in order to present as normal/neurotypical' in the stress (excitement)
And really hard work mentally to do to the social cues & be authentic at the same time.
As in order not to appear like a right weirdo her & other ND people have to 'method act' to 'be neurotypical'

So the following photo is Taylor realising that she's slipped up

Though to be fair whether Taylor is ND or not is her business.

P.S. Playing 'Cruel Summer' helped me get a Narcissistic ex out of my head.

Edited for spelling

I don't this there's any evidence to suggest she's actually ND but the thing about creating puzzles and trends for fans to get into is part of the business strategy that's made her so successful.

Oh this is fascinating!! This may well be part of it.

KenAdams · 12/02/2024 00:19

She's a good businesswoman and role model.

You only get a very short career as a female musician before the industry decides you're past it. She's been around for a while and hasn't fallen into the murkier side of fame that many do.

Scooter bought all her music to make money off she managed to find a way to outsmart him. She was doing deals with radio stations so they'd only play Taylors Version rather than the versions that Scooter owns. TV are often released with vault tracks which keeps her versions fresh and new.

She makes people buy actual CD's and vinyls by offering things like tour presales if you buy them. This is more money in her pocket than people just streaming them on Spotify.

The constant Easter eggs and puzzles that she does with her outfits, website, videos and social media keep fans talking and guessing.

She writes a shit ton of music and releases it with just enough of a gap to keep fans wanting more.

Her current tour is insane. She sings for 3 hours every night. Just the travel would tire me out. She couldn't do it without a jet for sure. She also does surprise songs every tour to make it less samey.

I know all this because my daughter is a huge fan and she's really inspired her love for singing, songwriting and piano playing. I can't dislike her just for that reason.

TeenLifeMum · 12/02/2024 00:21

My 15 year old cried when we gave her tickets for Christmas. Very talented artist who has a story - overcome awful misogynistic treatment, spoken out about it and a great role model. Like any art, people have different tastes.

tiktokontheclock · 12/02/2024 00:22

I love her. My 6 yr old dd loves listening and singing along to her songs. I showed her a TikTok of her singling the other day as she didn't actually know who Taylor was, just knew the music. She was like "wow she plays a guitar?! I'd like to try that!". She's a good influence.

TeenLifeMum · 12/02/2024 00:23

I also love the killers, lady gaga, Kelly Clarkson and Pink.

QueenBitch666 · 12/02/2024 00:27

Opium for the masses 🙄

seafoamgreenhair · 12/02/2024 00:31

She is the ultimate bland middle-of-the-road singer and performer, with the face of a mean girl.

I cannot see the point of her myself, let alone the hysteria the thought of paying massive amounts of money to see her boring arse in concert provokes.

A drop in the ocean to her. Is our bar really that low?

EmmaEmerald · 12/02/2024 00:35

@seafoamgreenhair do you feel any male singers have mean faces?

ChangeNameagain2 · 12/02/2024 00:38

I honestly adore her. Going to see her twice this year. Once with my 7yr old. We have bonded so, so much over her music. Sat in her room today, death by 1000 cuts in the background making our friendship bracelets together.

I honestly implore anyone to listen to folklore and evermore. You could just read the lyrics like actual poetry. I have never come across an artist who has the ability to so intricately describe what it feels like to be a woman, how the writings from her diary could literally describe so many different things in life.

I really started to pay attention after Kim and Kanye tried to take her down with the doctored phone call. They way she disappeared for 1yr and came back with Reputation was honestly one of the best/smartest moves I have ever seen, and the confidence it takes to do that!

Her documentary Miss Americana is really good at seeing how her brain works and she writes such amazing songs. Her ability to switch genres is unmatched. And being the only person in history to win the grammy for album of the year speaks for itself.

I made you my temple, my mural, my sky, now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life. Drawing hearts in the by lines, always taking up too much space and time, you assume I'm fine, but what would you do if I....

Off hand, a few spring to mind. And?

BarelyLiterate · 12/02/2024 00:46

It’s odd. Swift has apparently become an overnight sensation, and unquestionably the biggest music star on the planet, in her mid 30s, after a long career and having had only 1 major hit single in the U.K. That’s not your normal musical career trajectory.

I don’t dispute that she’s very talented ; that’s obvious. The overwhelming hype about an established artist at this stage of her career, however, indicates that what we are seeing is something of a fad.

Wondering what makes a face "mean".

also, why it has any relevance to their music.

EmmaEmerald · 12/02/2024 00:48

@BarelyLiterate overnight?!

18 years is not overnight!

Oh, ffs. I said she had the face of a mean girl, not a mean face.

How do you get the face of a mean girl? You think mean thoughts. The end.

chaosmaker · 12/02/2024 00:52

Don't some people just get caught up in hype like when Diana died? I didn't understand that either.

ChangeNameagain2 · 12/02/2024 00:52

@BarelyLiterate1 uk hit? That is for far from the truth, for many years. You may not have been aware of them, but there were definitely there. I think this is her 3rd time touring here.

thebestinterest · 12/02/2024 01:00

Taylor swift has a remarkable marketing team behind her. In addition to this, she’s genuinely a sweet, smart, and kind southern girl; and she has white suburban moms backing her, so yeah, that’s it in a nutshell. Her voice isn’t stellar; and others are more talented, no doubt.
