Please can somebody explain the hype?

I have friends (I am 50) who were seriously sad when they didn't get concert tickets (not in UK) and others who did, who were practically celebrating.

I don't get it. Don't want to ask for fear of looking like a twit.

For context, I have a 16yo DD and she just rolls her eyes and says wouldn't be caught dead at a TS concert. So no help there.

I don’t get it either op

Really sad that getting people to register to vote is considered being powerful in the political system. "oh no! She reminded eligible voters to make sure they could vote!"

You really have no clue do you.

Going by your username I'd guess, yes.

Can you then explain the Beatle-Mania? No Social media, not even a lot of people owning phones/own TVs in the early days.

Take That - omg, we had a teen working in our company when Robbie Williams split and she went into mourning it seemed. Again, just radio and TV and talking to her friends about it.

Hypes exists since we the viewer/listener create stars by enjoying their performances and the media (good old print and air) picked it up.

At no point did I say hypes did not exist before TS. I am simply stating my opinion on this particular artist and the hype to this degree (which is presumably the highest hype in the history in f music).

Patronising remarks...to 'please me' are not misogynistic?
Thank you so much for explaining how changing hormone levels affect women; I'll remember than in surgery.

I changed my wording because you accused me of being misogynistic, I don't want to fight with you.

I'm very much enjoying being in my 'Maggie Smith' phase (think Downton Abbey). So my hope is that TS will find that same kind of freedom in menopause, and it'll be interesting to see how this will show in her lyrics.

I'm also thinking of Kristin Scott Thomas's scene in Fleabag about the menopause which I love so very much. That kind of thing.

I certainly don't think TS 'needs' to get less polite. I didn't say that @Josette77 . She can do her.

I find it hard to take an interest in my own private life, much less that of a singer who occupies so much of my streaming time. Never enough time in the day to listen to music.

Comments here reminded me of this, which Swifties late to the party might not have seen...this is how we got Blank Space (acoustic performance after explanation)

@EmmaEmerald I'm bored of this thread- please can we have a Swifties one where we just share ace stuff like this?

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 14/02/2024 16:36

I was thinking of suggesting a Swifties thread. I'd be up for it 😁

See what I mean straight into insulting people, threatmatrix was a tv programme that my boys really enjoyed years ago. You can look that up as well. Let’s not talk about usernames it might hurt your feelings c

I don't want to fight either..........
I too liked K Scott Thomas in fleabag....although it resonated when she said the loss of walking into a room, heads turning, wondering what was going to happen......but something's lost, something's gained (in living every day, to quote Joni Mitchel) Overall, the freedom is to be cherished.

OP... I agree. I am 34 and honestly can not get my head around the hype. I understand everyone likes different things but usually even if I don't personally like something I can see the appeal to others..like even if I think it sounds shit I can appreciate the talent or accept that it is "fun" to listen to etc etc... however with Taylor I literally can not get my head around it..I think she's SO average and SO boring.. I have asked the same question as you..why?!?!

Good for you.
And where is the 'hype'. She doesn't need to hype anything. She's beyond that now.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

I have these arguments with my father in law and he is of the opinion bands like the Beatles will stand the test of time and will be ''classics' for future generarions. He genuinely believe the 60s and 70s were the zenith of musical genius for the modern world.

I think it would be really interesting to go forward in time 20 years and see how TS popularity is maintained. It may be she does reach true icon status and we will slowly move on from the figures of the 60s and 70s; I genuinely don't know.

He sounds deluded!

l hate the Beatles and 60’s music in general. They aren’t classics imo. My Millennials and Zedder don’t know anything about them or have any interest in them.

The nearest equivalent to Taylor was Madonna in the 80’s. But Taylor is softer and more principled. She is already an icon. We’ve moved on from the 60’s and 70’s years ago. They’re are plenty of bands more important than 60’s and 70’s.

Prince? The Smiths? Oasis? Radiohead? Not sure about more modern stuff. Lost touch a few years ago.

TheaBrandt · 15/02/2024 11:10

Maybe I am weird but I find TS far better than the Beatles etc. Am so moved by some of her songs and just listen to them all the time.

Know it’s subjective just really can’t understand people dismissing albums like Evermore/Folklore etc as lightweight rubbish. They are good. Really really good. Dh has a music mad friend with very eclectic wide ranging tastes and he agrees which makes me feel better about my taste!.

beguilingeyes · 15/02/2024 15:27

I was born in 1961 #oldperson and I love 60s/70s music...Paul Simon, James Taylor etc, but I love Taylor too.
I'm not sure about having to wait 20 years to see if she has longevity...she's been making records for 17 years already and getting better all the time.. People, quite rightly enthuse about her lyrics but she has some killer melodies as well.
It's all good. I think the Beatles were bloody geniuses. Taylor has a 'Paul' bass (WWPD).

I’m an old person too! 1963. Interesting how tastes are so different over such a short timescale.

I can hardly remember any 70’s music. The only things l still listen to from the 70’s are The Ramones and Joy Division. Maybe tiny bits of Blondie or The Clash.
