Please can somebody explain the hype?

I have friends (I am 50) who were seriously sad when they didn't get concert tickets (not in UK) and others who did, who were practically celebrating.

I don't get it. Don't want to ask for fear of looking like a twit.

For context, I have a 16yo DD and she just rolls her eyes and says wouldn't be caught dead at a TS concert. So no help there.

WTF. Do young girls need their pop stars to have an acceptable number of boyfriends? What's the acceptable number?

The internalised misogyny in this statement. She owes us nothing. I am looking forward to menopausal less polite TS.

It could be deemed misogynistic to presume that all menopausal women become 'less polite'.

TheaBrandt · 13/02/2024 22:31

Nah that’s just the reality.

It is not remotely misogynistic to suggest that women might become 'less polite' as they age, because women being 'less polite' is, frankly, a jolly good thing and should be encouraged.

It IS a good thing indeed; what is not good is lumping all menopausal women into a homogenous mass.

She is being used for political purposes.

do you want to tell us more on that?

TheaBrandt · 13/02/2024 22:55

It’s like saying all women get periods. It’s a fact not offensive

Oh FFS.
Ladeez and gentlemen...I think we have a winner. Is that you Donald?

EmmaEmerald · 13/02/2024 23:08

I find it hard to take an interest in my own private life, much less that of a singer who occupies so much of my streaming time. Never enough time in the day to listen to music.

Comments here reminded me of this, which Swifties late to the party might not have seen...this is how we got Blank Space (acoustic performance after explanation)

@Smilingthroughtears that’s a lovely summary you’ve written.
Not a clue where I heard this, fairly recently though: Taylor is in the same financial league as Jay Z, Rihanna, Kanye and a handful of other HUGE music artists. If not yet a billionaire, somewhere close. But she’s the only one who made it with just music related projects. No tequila/clothing line/cosmetics brand. Just the songs she wrote, her tours and her merch. Quite the achievement.

Teledeluxe · 13/02/2024 23:23

Saw her miming at a festival in Nashville a dozen or so years ago. Wasn’t impressed.

Just look it up. She’s very powerful in the political system.

It could be deemed misogynistic to presume that all menopausal women become 'less polite'.

I have lots of anecdotal evidence to support this from being one, and being friends with a fair few. We do, in general, give less of a shit as we age.

I made a generalisation, yes. Misogyny, no.

I'll rephrase to please you.

I hope that TS becomes less polite as she ages, I'm really interested to see how her songwriting develops.

pineapplesundae · 14/02/2024 02:23

This!

Josette77 · 14/02/2024 02:37

I actually don't think Taylor needs to become less polite.

She is articulate and assertive. She isn't a push over which is part of what makes her such a great role model.

Really sad that getting people to register to vote is considered being powerful in the political system. "oh no! She reminded eligible voters to make sure they could vote!"

WafflesRMine · 14/02/2024 04:43

Wherever Taylor has concerts in the US, she donates enough millions to charity especially to feed the homeless for years. I’m a recent “fan” as I like her newer songs. Her generosity, being real versus fake and cliques with her young fans very well.

WafflesRMine · 14/02/2024 04:56

Beautifully and fairly and truthfully written 🙌

Sausage1989 · 14/02/2024 06:11

OP... I agree. I am 34 and honestly can not get my head around the hype. I understand everyone likes different things but usually even if I don't personally like something I can see the appeal to others..like even if I think it sounds shit I can appreciate the talent or accept that it is "fun" to listen to etc etc... however with Taylor I literally can not get my head around it..I think she's SO average and SO boring.. I have asked the same question as you..why?!?!

reluctantbrit · 14/02/2024 06:32

Moreorlessmentallystable · 13/02/2024 19:16

Because people are sheep and youngsters are so easily impressed, in the times of social media you get a good marketing team and even people with zero talent are now celebrities, at least she writes, plays instruments etc...

Can you then explain the Beatle-Mania? No Social media, not even a lot of people owning phones/own TVs in the early days.

Take That - omg, we had a teen working in our company when Robbie Williams split and she went into mourning it seemed. Again, just radio and TV and talking to her friends about it.

Hypes exists since we the viewer/listener create stars by enjoying their performances and the media (good old print and air) picked it up.

TheTwirlyPoos · 14/02/2024 06:37

'people are sheep'
'crying into their cornflakes'

I'll say it again. The axes to grind don't come from Taylors fans.

mids2019 · 14/02/2024 06:57

I th I no Taylor amongst others although extremely talented are filling in gaps for this generation where there are no absolute cultural icons e.g. The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elvis, Tina Turner, etc. There are few big names in British music any impressively with the exception of Ed Sheeran and Adele.

In addition TS is a marketing/PR genius and I really like the songs but also admire the way her career is managed. I think time will tell how far up on the list of global megastar she appears historically.

I think it is telling that female icons are more likely to be childless to a relatively late age and a little less likely to settle down. Perhaps this is due to the immense career demands of the music industry?

She’s doing the same thing as the Beatles etc. Just in a 21st century way. Why isn’t she a cultural icon? She’s smart and principled. An excellent icon for young women and girls.

How is Mick Shaganythingthatmoves Jagger a better cultural icon than her?

Patronising remarks...to 'please me' are not misogynistic?
Thank you so much for explaining how changing hormone levels affect women; I'll remember than in surgery.

TheaBrandt · 14/02/2024 09:46

Clutching at straws. Womens hormone levels change as they age. How is saying that misogynistic? You must be desperate to take the offence - weird.
