Please can somebody explain the hype?

I have friends (I am 50) who were seriously sad when they didn't get concert tickets (not in UK) and others who did, who were practically celebrating.

I don't get it. Don't want to ask for fear of looking like a twit.

For context, I have a 16yo DD and she just rolls her eyes and says wouldn't be caught dead at a TS concert. So no help there.

Does TS do these things?

She promotes herself as having principles.
She promotes herself as being a feminist.
She's selective in both aspects, as many folk are.

Beatles-esque!!!

I don’t mind her music but someone please post her *Deep lyrics and explain the parallels with The Beatles

I wouldn't really class The Beatles as a band known for their deep and meaningful lyrics tbh. 😄

I have no clue

She's just an American girl

EcoCustard · 11/02/2024 21:50

Never been a Swift fan over the years however, dd8 loves her and I have had to listen to her all the time over the last 18 months. I now love her, she’s intelligent, has values, and her lyrics are brilliant. I love that she’s a role model for Dd in a world of vacuous Kardashian characters. Gutted I never got tickets, next time!

TheTwirlyPoos · 11/02/2024 21:50

Her music writing ability is unbelievable, somebody will be along to write the lyrics of shake it off in a mocking way then someone else will quote the yellow submarine back at them. She has a work ethic and a commitment to her fans that I don't think many other match.

It's really dull when the whole 'only teens or their mums like her' because it's just patently untrue. It's also really dull when people blame her for not being perfect. Don't think she's ever claimed to be, think it's our obsession over younger women.

@OP I think with this tour there is a feeling that she might not tour again given its literally the whole of her career. So there is a feeling that it might be now or never.

In a sea of manufactured bands and Kardashian style influencers she is a genuine talent who writes her own music. She’s also been the target of all sorts of nonsense from the likes of Kanye West which she rose above with grace. I think she’s a great role model and the hype is well deserved.

There's also a 'sea' of musicians and bands who are much less 'manufactured' than TS is though.

TheTwirlyPoos · 11/02/2024 21:51

I mean these threads just get silly. She's won more Grammys for best album than anyone else in history. But sure, she's just a American girl.

Pedallleur · 11/02/2024 21:52

Does nothing for me but her career building ability and her a.bility with social media is superb. She has worked hard on that career and seemingly won't be derailed. Keeps herself away from headlines and scandal. She and Beyonce are a study in how far female artists have come. Women in Rock on Sky Arts talks about this and everyone who has gone before e.g. Pat Benatar or Joan Jett say the success and rewards are overdue. Pink is another artist like that. Good management and an ability to stay focused.

I think John Lennon wrote more 'deep' stuff whereas Paul McCartney maybe more 'observational' overall?

TheTimeIsNowMaybeNow · 11/02/2024 21:55

I don't get it either, middle age women getting upset because thet can't get tickets?

EmmaEmerald · 11/02/2024 21:57

The show itself is very creative in terms of set, lighting, choreography etc

If you've been a fan from the start, it's 18, 19 years
So the soundtrack of a huge section of life

Ranging through all types of music, styles of video, something that will have spoken to a 50 year old at many crucial points - loved ones ill health, dealing with misogyny and harassment...and the happy things too.

If you enjoy storytelling - well nothing good starts in a Getaway Car, maybe someone won't remember all my Champagne Problems, and for a little history, there goes the Last Great American Dynasty.

It's a bonding thing too. At the concert screening, people were chatting a lot before the start and teens were asking us things like "what were you doing when x album came out".

I hope your friends who got tickets will make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it....

It's fandom I guess. I don't think I've been a fan in such a big way before.

TheTwirlyPoos · 11/02/2024 21:57

Why are middle aged women not allowed to be upset that they can't do something?!

Is there a cut off for liking current music I'm not aware of?
Should I be diving into Michael Ball's show tunes past 35?

@Wasbedeudetetdas still hardly deep IMO. Plus he was vile.

Do we know what the whole CD snub was/is about?

I don't think it was intentional but incredibly thoughtless considering she was schmoozing with everyone else around her!

BobnLen · 11/02/2024 22:00

Is there any men that go to her concerts and like her or just middle aged women and teen girls.

What is the age cut off? When is it unacceptable to get upset that you can't get tickets to a show you want.

I'm 41 and would have been upset if I didn't get Eurovision tickets last year- or is that ok as it caters for a more middle age audience?

Usually if someone is musically good you would expect male and female fans

I'd say the music does seem to appeal to women more, from what I've seen, and I can understand why.
There are presumably male fans too though.
