Acid attack in Clapham

Has anyone else seen this horrible news story? Apparently 9 people have been injured, looks like the original targets were a woman and two children.

What is WRONG with people?!

Me too - maybe sex offences aren’t deemed serious. Like DV isn’t.

In SW4 now. No evidence of the Far Right kicking off anywhere except in virtue-signallers’ little heads.

The race accuser chorus on this thread is clearly hoping these non-existent hordes will rush up Clapham Southside any minute now.

  1. No one has said it is kicking off. I said that I hope there is a strong police presence in case of trouble.
  2. Only a complete lunatic would want it to kick off.
  3. If you don't understand that there are violent racists out there who would love to use this an excuse to kick off, you are naive. Have a look at Twitter tonight, if you can stomach it.

And that makes me sincerely hope that you haven't managed to procreate.

Idk what the likelihood of it kicking off is but the cold weather probably helps

Why is it acceptable to say one sex is misogynistic but not one race?

Yes, that is true.

Supersimkin2 · 01/02/2024 20:36

I get you - but I won’t be working myself up reading stupid people on X saying stupid things. Dull.

I’ll be working with refugees. Unpaid.

How’s that for virtue signalling? 😃

Viohh · 01/02/2024 20:37

My dad is Sikh/Indian (born here). Mum is Irish Catholic. Hopefully that qualifies me to speak on the the role of race/culture in this incident.

Some people are far too concerned with not wanting to cause offence. We need to be able to highlight an issue which is more prevalent among certain cultures. The desire to virtue signal only propagates abuse. STOP this absurdity. Middle class white women who want to appear progressive are the worst for defending or “contextualising” poor behaviour. I had a white friend at university debate that FGM was a way in which women can assert agency. The saying so open-minded that brains fall out comes to mind.

I was made aware by a Sikh activist group that there were grooming gangs targeting non-Muslim/ Sikh women YEARS before the Rochdale stuff emerged. If people were brave enough to have had evidence-based conversations back then how many atrocities could have been avoided?

And I will readily talk about Sikhs and honour killings/abuse. I don’t post this to point fingers and vilify Islamic communities.

VanilleA · 01/02/2024 20:39

Those poor kids. Those poor poor kids.

Livelovebehappy · 01/02/2024 20:40

London is so bad atm. I used to live there many years ago, and can’t believe how dangerous it is. Knife crime, and crime in general, is just out of control down there. A lot of people who lived there when I did have left over the last few years. I no longer recognise the lovely place it used to be.

Don't you think that the common denominator is misogyny, not race? The Catholic Church. Rotherham. Wayne Couzens. Different races and religions involved. Misogyny allowed all of it to flourish.

MaryJobMosesJesusMuhammad · 01/02/2024 19:43

Recognising the increased occurrence of FGM in specific communities from Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Egypt, Nigeria, and Eritrea in this country is an important awareness, not an act of racism.

Acknowledging that there is a higher prevalence of alcohol addiction among white Britons, without assuming that all white folk have a drink problem, is not a racist observation.

Bringing attention to the existence of South Asian grooming gangs is not an act of racism; it is about identifying a particular group involved in such criminal activities.

Noticing the prevalence of first cousin marriages in Pakistani communities in England and raising concern about the potential risks for fatal genetic abnormalities is not racist; it is highlighting a specific practice and its consequences.

Recognising that about 50% of knife crime offenders are from BAME backgrounds is not racist; it is an observation of a statistic that needs understanding and attention without assuming guilt based on race or ethnicity.

We have to be able to notice and address specific issues in order to find appropriate solutions, without making generalisations.

There is a difference between observing or noticing patterns and suggesting that all people from a specific group are guilty.

All men for example, are not misogynists.

Away with your balanced and reasoned points, they have no place on Mumsnet.

No one knows if they’re an asylum seeker. Where are your ‘facts’ from?

I'm not going to do your googling for you.... plenty of reputable news sources are reporting it.

Fluffyfleece · 01/02/2024 20:48

Cazpar · 31/01/2024 23:19

I doubt it was random. I suspect it's possibly gang related.

A traffic collision (attack happened after an accident) where police are already present and get caught up in the incident, and where the perp is already carrying acid (who carries acid randomly?) and doesn't care about the police? Pretty unlikely it's random. Not impossible, but not probable.

Highly doubt random as well. That happened on our previous little lane and turned out it was money motivated as they knew the time a local shop was cashing up.

SealHouse · 01/02/2024 20:50

Nightowl1234 · 01/02/2024 19:38

It was reported in the media this morning. Why don’t you tell them to get their facts straight.

It still doesn’t explain why you’re so focused on the man’s race. Why don’t you have a word with yourself.

The only thing that you've contributed to this thread (besides a boring little rant about "Tories and their right wing media mouthpieces") is misinformation. I am merely correcting your misinformation. You've also told several posters to "have a word with" themselves. Maybe you should take your own advice.

Yes, the root is no doubt misogyny - the manifestation of which is often culturally specific. Let’s tackle it, in all it’s forms.

I think we run into an issue of over-intellectualising

Maybe it’s possible that, if he is guilty, it’s both because he’s a man AND also how he was brought up (wherever that might happen to be)?

Granted asylum on his third attempt and a convicted sex offender. I’m so glad he managed to disfigure himself

Catholic Church? I mean, really? Of all the religions you could have gone for, you just couldn't bring yourself to type the most obvious. Jesus wept.

YesSirMam · 01/02/2024 20:59

U.K. should be no home for a man like him. That young woman & children came here for safety in the hope of a better life & look what’s happened to her. This country is a joke. It’s embarrassing. What use is a man like this to any country.
