Acid attack in Clapham

PawsAndReflection · 31/01/2024 23:06

Has anyone else seen this horrible news story? Apparently 9 people have been injured, looks like the original targets were a woman and two children.

What is WRONG with people?!

It’s misguided statements like this that led to the Rochdale grooming gangs getting away with it for years.

Obviously, statistically, wrt to violence against women, men are an issue. Men from certain cultures with certain beliefs, are even more of an issue. To deny this is to deny victims justice. And to deny reality. Wake up.

Statistically speaking, most paedophiles are overwhelming white men. Statistically speaking, most alcohol fuelled violence is caused by - you guessed it, white men. So I don’t see how certain other races are “more of an issues”.

You are just part of the same racist problem by selectively focusing on one race and using it to justify your views, whilst ignoring other facts. Perhaps have a word with yourself about why you feel the need to do this.

Maybe the issue is just men, and the poor policing of men and the failure of our government to keep women and children safe.

@TypicalCoach we don't know if he's an immigrant or if he was born and brought up here.

Plenty of Britush men commit acts of violence against women.

Yep and if we’re going to talk about culture do we specifically make a thing about white English cultures when it’s majority white English males who are football thugs and go home to be violent to their wife?

No, we don’t.

Men’s violence may or may not sometimes manifest in slightly, different ways depending on which culture but that’s neither here nor there as it all has the same impact of controlling, terrorising and abusing women.

FloraMaguire · 01/02/2024 16:07

But the point here is we have no idea about the suspect (yet?). And it’s racist to assume he isn’t British or he is Muslim based purely on a name/photo. That would be like seeing an image of a black person and making a judgement about their nationality and attitudes based solely on the image.

Of course other cultures are worse than the U.K. But even here we need an entire societal shift to overcome patriarchal systems and attitudes leading to the violence against women. And that isn’t a simple or short-term thing to address.

You obviously don’t know the area then… Clapham has 2 sides, the posh side and the not so posh/naice side. Actually what I mean to say... I suppose it can happen in any part of London. But what I know from being a Londoner (DM's parents were both from Clapham, Elms Road and Lavender Hill/Northcote Road) and having spent many years living in various parts of London including on Clapham Common Southside is that many areas live cheek by jowl - so nice/not so nice.

All of inner London is like this & Lessar Ave houses cost like 2m…

I'm well aware of how much the houses go for in that street! Gentrification has happened all over London including Clapham. That doesn't take away from the fact that parts of Clapham are 'rough' but kept 'quiet'. A lot of inner London is like this, but personally I find a big difference between North/West and South London and so do people I know, from those areas.

Hoiz · 01/02/2024 16:11

London (and the rest of the UK) has been stripped of so many vital services. Can see this type of thing happening more often. Very sad.

I left London in 2020. Moped theft was last straw. Still have to go in 3 times a week.

My sister (in Hackney) often wants to look after my dog there but I fear for his safety so he’s banned from the city.

No idea what the solution is

Dogdilemma2000 · 01/02/2024 13:58

That looks like a mug shot. Wonder if he’s been arrested previously.

Those poor poor children.

I think that looks like a passport photo, not a mug shot.

In fact I went for a walk on Clapham Common just the other weekend, had overpriced tea/latte and cake in the cafe next to the bandstand and drove down Elms Road. There are certain parts of e.g. Battersea though which I definitely wouldn't step foot in after dark and Clapham too.

It's a horrific attack. Scummy little twat who did this.

Edited

It’s horrific anywhere.

Not totally understanding the point you’re making - Abbeville is a nice part of Clapham.

A quite shocking misrepresentation of statistics as you well know.

Pakistan and other Muslim countries have always had a big problem with acid throwing and the honour nonsense 'qisas' why try to deny it - it doesn't solve anything. Why always the race card when facts are quoted - maybe if it's highlighted a bit more the Immams might speak out

The immams definitely need to speak out about this.

tempnameforadvice · 01/02/2024 16:20

@Nightowl1234 Battersea isn't Clapham. And the area in Clapham this happened in has a Gail's and a Ginger Pig butchers. It's as middle class as it comes.

This could happen anywhere - and people are living cheek by jowl all around the world, and managing not to throw caustic soda and the likes at 3 year olds.

tempnameforadvice · 01/02/2024 16:21

I'm just trying to say, is that the area itself (where the attack took place) isn't that as nice as people think... but I've actually got the street mixed up with further down Clapham Common (towards Clapham North) - so my apologies. I had heard from a friend it took place towards Clapham North, not South.

See my most recent reply on this. It could happen anywhere. But I know Clapham North and crossover into Stockwell. Not as 'naice' as some MNers would think...

Actually - just round the corner from Abbeville Village there are at least 3 estates, I don't know them personally now. But I certainly wouldn't delude yourself that everyone living there is 'naice' just because there's Gails/Ginger Pig there.

Oh dear… have you taken account of U.K. demographics in your in depth statistical analysis? I suggest you do that, and reassess your conclusions.

The same thing that's always wrong with people who do things like this. They're angry / stupid / mentally unwell / desperate / being coerced...

You missed off "misogynist".

I don't think anyone is missing this point but it does give men the perfect excuse to point the finger at immigration being the issue, rather than it being men who are the issue.

Notaflippinclue · 01/02/2024 16:27

Nightowl - pound for pound you are talking BS 'independent' a think tank in Dec 2017 British-Pakistani researchers claim 84% of grooming gang offences are Asian, face facts because it's still not sorted and still going on.

I might misunderstand your post @Notaflippinclue but Pakistani are considered Asian as per wiki.

£50 to Women's Aid says that this attack is either against the suspect's ex or against his sister.

Ok but the area it happened - the street and surrounding roads are very nice.

I have lived in the immediate area for years and always felt safe.

To your point about hearing from a friend it happened closer to Clapham North - it didn’t happen there so it doesn’t matter what you suspect people think of that area.

The men who acid attacked Katie Piper were not Pakistani nor Muslim. Have a read about the men who did it (one her ex partner who planned it, the other a crack head who threw the acid at her).

Acid attacks are more common in the UK than you think, it's just not reported in the media as much.

On a side note, there were just over 600 murders in the UK in 2023. That's nearly two murders a day. I bet you hardly gasping at that though.

I went to college years ago with a boy from Pakistan who had been maimed most cruelly by thrown acid.
It was when he was much younger, but the scars remained.

Such a wicked thing to do to anybody.
I hope wherever he is now, he is happy and has a good family around him.

CaveMum · 01/02/2024 16:46

Yes 2 murders a day is a horrific statistic @cupcakesarelife, pray tell who are the main perpetrators of these murders? I’ll give you a hint, approx 93% of them have a Y chromosome.
