Has anyone else seen this horrible news story? Apparently 9 people have been injured, looks like the original targets were a woman and two children.

What is WRONG with people?!

The problems of men and misogynist cultures transcend race.

As to the methods used by men to commit violence, don't they somewhat reflect what is available in the region? Hence gun crime in America. Hence the rise in knife crime (including against women and girls) in the UK.

WaterHound · 01/02/2024 16:50

Men. What is wrong with men?

YesSirMam · 01/02/2024 16:56

This is one of the worst things I’ve ever heard. I pray the mum & toddler have not been blinded. How traumatising for her & her babies. A man treating a woman as a personal procession is revolting. I hope he’s caught by locals before the police & beaten. I’m glad he’s caught some of the alkali himself

TylaTiga · 01/02/2024 17:05

This issue with this becoming solely about race/religion for me is that whilst there are potentially cultural aspects to this, it is already being used an an excuse. ‘of course it’s one of them’ ‘we all knew it would be’ - it diminishes the problem at heart. The cultural aspect is one small part of the fact that it’s based on misogyny and outdated misogynistic views that cut deep.

TylaTiga · 01/02/2024 17:07

Misogyny and women’s rights aren’t divided up into different countries - they’re ALL our issues. It’s a worldwide problem we should be focusing on together, not saying ‘well this culture does x, so it’s a cultural thing’. It’s not, it’s a woman’s rights thing.

Well yes but you can't gloss over the fact that misogyny and violence against women existed and still exists in the UK long before the current waves of immigration.

No this is what men do. If they’re doing it in their own society then it’s still unacceptable. We should still care about those women and what they’re suffering, not just because they’ve come and down it in ‘our’ country.

Blah12345678999 · 01/02/2024 17:12

So I don’t think this is subject purely to certain cultures and countries unless I’m mistaken in thinking those perpetrators mentioned in those articles weren’t born and raised in the UK… With English/European sounding names… Or maybe the influence of immigrants from other cultures made them do it 🙄

CaveMum · 01/02/2024 16:46

Yes 2 murders a day is a horrific statistic @cupcakesarelife, pray tell who are the main perpetrators of these murders? I’ll give you a hint, approx 93% of them have a Y chromosome.

My comment was purely to speak up against the casual racism and Islamaphobia on MN. I haven't denied or said anything about men/Y chromosome being the main perpetrators. But yes, I agree, it is horrific that a lot of violence in the UK and the world is by men.

I do not believe men are inherently violent though, nor that violence is natural to men. Rather, we teach and expect boys from a very young age that violence is expected of them, from "play" fighting to joining the army, to hardly holding violent men to account in our justice systems.

It is a global cultural problem and the main cause of feminicide and murder of children. Whether it's by acid attacks in South Asia or by knife crime in the UK, violence by men is a problem across the globe. Not to mention the countless male world "leaders" who wage war and genocides on innocent people including our own PM and political parties.

Boke · 01/02/2024 17:16

We can have this discussion here all we want but outside of here, no one is talking about male violence against women being the problem. Not the police, not politicians, not the media, not the common man or woman on the street. No one. Nothing is going to change for women sadly.

Agreed. Not only is it not being talked about, it’s getting worse. Women’s rights are being eroded by the day. And why - because men are in charge. It’s a patriarchal society now more than ever. Men love the trans debate - what a gift to them. That’s why it’s mainly men (trans women) who go on about it. Few trans men (females) would argue to the hilt about being in men’s sports or men’s changing rooms.

Bridgetta · 01/02/2024 17:22

The problem with saying ‘ALL MEN’ is that the community you want to target will just assume it’s not for them and they can safely ignore any discourse targeted to ALL MEN (ie native white Brits). You’d think it’s being inclusive but instead it is just landing on deaf ears

CaveMum · 01/02/2024 17:22

There is a great chapter in the book I mentioned upthread (See What You Made Me Do by Jess Hill) called "When Women Use Violence". It contains a lot of really useful information, backed up by statistical evidence about how the "women are just as bad" argument falls down.

Bridgetta · 01/02/2024 17:24

I DO think violence is inherent to men. It is the work of civilisation to drill it out of them.

Definitely. Just look at the other thread on here whether a father has betrayed his teenage son for cuddling his mum - it’s part of the bigger picture. We teach men to be “men”; no feelings, admire Andrew Tate and his sexist shit, get yourself a trad wife and do whatever you can to get to the top.

The whole system is broken.

CaveMum · 01/02/2024 17:28

Another recommendation, is to listen to the Infinite Monkey Cage episode "Battle of the Sexes" they do touch on male violence and whether it is nature or nurture.

The Infinite Monkey Cage - Series 14 - Battle of the Sexes - BBC Sounds

The Infinite Monkey Cage - Series 14 - Battle of the Sexes - BBC Sounds

Brian Cox and Robin Ince and guests discuss the biological battle of the sexes.

£50 to Women's Aid says that this attack is either against the suspect's ex or against his sister.

The DM is saying that the victim is 'known to Ezedi'. I bet it's his ex and his DC who had escaped from him and he'd tracked them down. He's from Newcastle apparently and the police think he escaped north after the attack.

For all the men and women on MN, I hope you will all watch this - this is the most powerful talk I've ever heard on violence against women and girls, by men :(

we can all learn something from Jackson Katz:

Violence against women—it's a men's issue: Jackson Katz at TEDxFiDiWomen

Jackson Katz, Phd, is an anti-sexist activist and expert on violence, media and masculinities. An author, filmmaker, educator and social theorist, Katz has w...

I haven’t RTWT but do we know it was an asylum seeker? My first thought was ex DH/DP of the woman who was attacked.
