My God, the Supreme Court has just found in favour of Trump and overturned the Colarado judgement

Not all of it, though. They did not say that he was not guilty of insurrection, only that he couldn't be kept off the ballot. I was afraid they were going to declare him innocent of insurrection, which was what he was asking them to do.

That means his criminal trial regarding Jan 6 should be able to go ahead as soon as they have declared that he doesn't have absolute immunity for all acts during his presidency including those which had nothing to do with his position as president.

MissConductUS · 04/03/2024 18:57

I was afraid they were going to declare him innocent of insurrection, which was what he was asking them to do.

That was an impossible request. The SC doesn't conduct criminal trials, it only reviews them for constitutional errors.

With this lot, I didn't feel confidant of their knowing that, or caring if they did know!

This ruling was unanimous, which is fairly rare. So the liberal and conservative members do agree on basic points of law.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/03/2024 20:02

They agreed on kicking it to congress, really.

Igotjelly · 04/03/2024 20:08

To be honest I do have an uneasy feeling about being able to remove political rivals from a ballot when they haven’t been found guilty of anything yet. Even if the rival is Trump.

MissConductUS · 04/03/2024 21:12

They agreed on kicking it to congress, really.

Well, only in the sense that Congress can amend the Constitution, but it's not easily done.

L1ttledrummergirl · 04/03/2024 23:01

Apologies here to @MissConductUS, but the republicans in America seem to prefer a lying, misogynistic, unintelligent, dictator wannabe, who has his head up his own arse, to a seemingly sensible woman.

Have they all gone mad?

No apology is needed. Halley has consistently gotten 30-40% of the vote in the republican primaries, but Trump as a former president has a considerable advantage. He's almost running as an incumbent. It's still a very different republican party than it was pre-Trump.

Trump has stupidly been insulting her and her supporters, and he did the same with DeSantis and his supporters. He should be trying to bring them on board, not alienate them. He may lose to Biden if those Republicans decide to stay home on election day rather than come out to vote for him.

DancesWithDucks · 05/03/2024 07:43

Trump seems incapable of not insulting anyone who doesn't do exactly what he wants, and sometimes even then.

The occupying forces have removed the last experienced pro-Ukrainian specialists from the ZNPP. Maintenance of the station has been entrusted to Russians and local collaborators who have agreed to work there," stated Petro Kotin, Vice Chairman of the board of "Energoatom."
"At the beginning of the year, there were 360 company employees at the NPP; however, access to the station is now closed to them. During February, the occupiers removed the last of our personnel who remained loyal to Ukraine and guaranteed safety at the station," Kotin explained
....
"As a result, they currently have only eight shift chiefs left - individuals directly responsible for nuclear and radiation safety. The nuclear units at the ZNPP have been modernized, with designs significantly different from the Russian ones. Russian personnel cannot reliably operate them."
"In addition, personnel from nearby towns and villages have been recruited, many of whom lack understanding of nuclear power plants," he added.

After the data leak, NATO countries have urged Germany to exercise greater caution with classified information and bolster security measures, according to Bloomberg.
"Such actions might be expected from individuals who have never paid attention during security briefings, but not from military personnel," remarked one of the sources cited by the publication.

Since the beginning of the large-scale war, France has handed over three Milan anti-tank complexes, ten 120 mm mortars and six Mistral MANPADS to the Armed Forces.

Ukrainian Magura V5 naval drones are already independent from Starlink and will be able to hit air targets as well, — the head of the Directorate General of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov in a conversation with "Ukrainian Pravda".
▫️Now the drone has been significantly improved, in particular, several duplicate communication systems have been provided;
▫️It is planned to deploy air defense equipment and other attack systems on them for all types of targets: land, surface, air;
▫️Work is ongoing to make them less noticeable, in particular, thanks to submersion under water for a short time;
▫️The maritime drone control point is located in Kyiv. After the Russian Iskander attack, one of the drone factories moved underground;
▫️The first demonstration of the drone's capabilities was a training mission on the Dnipro. The first Russian ship — "Ivan Khurs", was damaged in May 2023;
▫️For the first time, operators managed to destroy enemy ships on the night of November 10 — a group of drones hit the high-speed landing craft of the Russians "Serna" and "Akula";
▫️Now drones work in groups of more than five units, which allows you to allocate roles and determine the order of attack;
▫️At first, the operators try to immobilize the target by aiming at the ship's engines. At the second stage, strikes are made at the most vulnerable places of the ship — they are determined during mission planning. In the case of a successful defeat, the following blows are applied to the hole;
▫️The mission can last about two days. All this time the operators are working;
▫️The price of Magura V5 reaches "millions of hryvnias" per unit, but the performance of such drones is ten times higher than this amount.

🇺🇸US House of Representatives spokesman Mike Johnson has begun talks with congressmen preparing a compromise bill that includes aid for Ukraine, — CNN
This document proposes to allocate more than $10 billion less money to Kyiv ($47.69 billion against the previously planned $60.06 billion).
In addition, the bill includes measures to tighten border controls (a key Republican demand) and revive Trump's "Stay in Mexico" program, under which migrants will have to wait for a decision from an American immigration court outside the United States.

🇵🇱🇺🇦Ukraine's Ambassador to Poland appealed to Polish farmers not to block the border with Ukraine as part of their protests, as it is not the root cause of their problems, but such actions hit Ukraine's defense capabilities.
He noted that previous blockades have already caused significant damage to Ukraine – the economy has lost about UAH 19 billion (~USD 492 million), and this is a serious blow to Ukraine's defense capabilities.
The ambassador emphasized that Polish business, which actively trades with Ukraine and in 2023 exported twice as much to Ukraine as it exported from Ukraine to Poland, is also suffering.

  • Russian authorities continue to exploit the leaked recording of German military officers discussing the theoretical provision of Taurus missiles to Ukraine to deter Western military aid provisions to Ukraine.
  • Russian forces recently made confirmed advances near Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Donetsk City amid continued positional engagements along the entire frontline.
  • A Russian news aggregator claimed on March 4 that Russian forces replaced Storm-Z convict units with Storm-V units, a mechanism for distributing convicts into the regular Russian military as opposed to keeping them siloed within convict-only units, as was the case with Storm-Z formations.

The thought does scuttle across my mind - is Ukraine reporting them honestly, since they are so high for so long?

I suspect Ukraine are trying to be honest but it's not a precise art...

The bigger worry is it has looked for a long time now as if Putin doesn't care at all about casualty numbers, has the means of driving the poor bloody infantry forwards regardless of costs ( remember a year plus back when all the talk was of morale collapsing? well if it ever did, it made no obvious difference) and he can still top the numbers up.....which sounds much like what Stalin did in WW2.

DancesWithDucks · 06/03/2024 12:18

yes, it's been said he is generally relying on human waves, that seems to have happened at Avdiivka, and crypto - mobilization is going on in strength so he does have the numbers. There are more Russians and military hardware in Ukraine now than at the beginning of the invasion, apparently.

Morale did collapse but got up again after a proportion of the refusers got shot / hung / left to die in pits ....

The hardware losses have been so huge too though. Hundreds and perhaps into four figures in the last weeks - even for Russia, that's got to hurt. They can't replace them with new machines that fast and they have to run out of the un-mothballed ones eventually!
