Key points from her address include:
▫️ Prioritizing strategic intelligence to outmaneuver Russia.
▫️ Establishment of a European Commissioner for Defense, a first in EU history.
▫️ Advocacy for increased defense spending in Europe, emphasizing efficient utilization through joint procurement and framework agreements to enhance operational interoperability.
▫️ Purposeful development of a European defense industry, notably in Patriot air defense systems production.
▫️ Alignment of the EU defense and industrial strategy with Ukraine's needs for effective resource distribution.

According to CNN, Russia is advancing in the development of weapons capable of disabling satellites. Plans include the creation of a weapon emitting pulses of electromagnetic energy and highly charged particles to disrupt satellites orbiting Earth.
American intelligence sources mentioned by the publication stated that while Russia has made progress in this field, employing such a weapon would be a last resort due to its potential impact on Russian satellites as well.

The foreign ministers of the G7 countries promised to keep Russian assets frozen until the Russian Federation pays for the damage caused to Ukraine.
They also pledged to tighten sanctions against Russia and step up efforts to combat sanctions circumvention.

"Free and democratic Europe will have to coexist with an authoritarian and belligerent Russia for decades," stated German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius in Munich.

Defense Minister Rustam Umerov names the lessons Ukraine has learned after withdrawal of troops from Avdiivka
He said that the Armed Forces need:
▪️modern air defense systems to prevent the enemy from using aerial bombs;
▪️long-range weapons to destroy enemy depots;
▪️artillery shells.
He added that fortifications are also being built and strengthened. [This isn't really 'learned' stuff. It's what they already knew and were desperately asking for]

❗️During the offensive on Avdiivka in Donetsk oblast, the Russians lost 17,000 soldiers in the battle
Also, about 30 thousand occupiers were wounded during the battle for the city, said the spokesman for the Tavria Operational and Strategic Group of troops. [a breakdown of the figure of 47,000 that has been quoted]

State Customs Service of Ukraine: On February 18, traffic at the Yahodyn-Dorohusk checkpoint will be blocked
According to the agency, a complete blockage of traffic for trucks in both directions is expected. Farmers from Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and France are heading to the Polish-Ukrainian border to take part in a large-scale protest.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte says the delivery of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine is "on schedule." Rutte added that the Netherlands, together with Denmark, will supply Ukraine with 24 fighter jets or "possibly more."

Yesterday, the pilot of the downed Russian fighter jet directed his plane at the settlements of the Antratsyt community in the temporarily occupied Luhansk region
The number of victims is currently unknown.

Yesterday, the pilot of the downed Russian fighter jet directed his plane at the settlements of the Antratsyt community in the temporarily occupied Luhansk region

I’d be interested to see the basis of that claim TBH…..it may be legit but at first glance it’s a bit like the stories you occasional hear of pilots bravely avoiding the school/hospital/nunnery on their way to the smoking hole in the ground…

If you’ve genuinely “lost” the aircraft you rarely have any say in exactly where it ends up..

Fox111 · 18/02/2024 14:40

@PerkingFaintly
Thank you for your kind words. I have lost hope in Russia long time ago and at the back of my mind knew its when rather then if for Navalny.

What really angers me is the lack of realisation from the western leaders of the gravity of threat this regime poses. I strongly believe that the only tool there is left is on the battlefield in Ukraine. Time and time again they sabotage Ukranian efforts because of their imaginary red lines or some idiocracy about some technicality.

MMBaranova · 18/02/2024 16:14

Agreed. If you live in a Nato country, what's down the road in terms of your relationship with Russia in the coming years?

MagicFox · 18/02/2024 16:19

Russia has expended nearly as much on large-scale aggression against Ukraine as Ukraine's allies have invested in assisting its defense efforts.

According to Reuters, two years of active hostilities incurred costs of $211 billion (€191.9 billion) for the Russian Federation. These expenses encompassed arming, deploying, and maintaining troops for offensive operations.

Overall, the invasion of Ukraine incurred a cost of $1.3 trillion for the aggressor, factoring in lost economic growth until 2026.

Simultaneously, data from the Kiel Institute of World Economy reveals that over the two years of extensive warfare, global contributions to Ukraine amounted to €244.88 billion. Of this sum, €104.26 billion was designated for military needs, with the remainder allocated for financial support and humanitarian purposes.

The United States provided €67.71 billion in aid to Ukraine, while the European Union contributed €77.18 billion (excluding individual country aid). Germany allocated €41 billion, of which €22.06 billion did not include EU assistance, as reported by Bild.

Nevertheless, experts highlight a significant gap between EU commitments and actual allocated funds. Despite assuming obligations totaling €144 billion for assistance, only half of this amount was earmarked for specific purposes.

"To fully compensate for US military aid by 2024, Europe must double the current level and pace of weapon aid," the Institute asserts.

https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-february-17-2024

Key Takeaways:

  • Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu claimed that Russian forces have established “full control” over Avdiivka, Donetsk Oblast as Russian forces continued to advance in the settlement on February 17, and Ukrainian forces have likely withdrawn from Avdiivka.
  • Russian sources largely characterized the Ukrainian withdrawal as disorganized and costly and claimed that Russian forces managed to encircle large Ukrainian groups in Avdiivka, but ISW has observed no evidence supporting these Russian claims.
  • Russian forces appear to have temporarily established limited and localized air superiority and were able to provide ground troops with close air support during the final days of their offensive operation to capture Avdiivka, likely the first time that Russian forces have done so in Ukraine.
  • Delays in Western security assistance may lead to further significant constraints on Ukrainian air defenses that could allow Russian forces to replicate the close air support that facilitated Russian advances in Avdiivka at scale in Ukraine.
  • Ukrainian forces reportedly shot down three Russian fighter aircraft—two Su-34s and one Su-35—over Donetsk Oblast on February 17, likely having committed scarce air defense assets to help cover the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Avdiivka.
  • Russian authorities arrested several hundred demonstrators on February 17 amid slightly larger demonstrations responding to imprisoned opposition politician Alexei Navalny’s death.
  • The US Department of Justice (DoJ) announced on February 17 that the US sent $500,000 of forfeited Russian funds to Estonia to repair Ukraine’s energy infrastructure
  • Russian forces made confirmed advances near Bakhmut and Avdiivka and in western Zaporizhia Oblast
  • Russian occupation authorities continue efforts to propagandize and militarize Ukrainian youth in occupied areas.

Books.

Do you think historians and other academics will start to write books about the Ukraine conflict soon? We have a huge range of historical books for other conflicts ranging from ww2 to Vietnam; when will we cast out she on Ukraine.

Possibly it is too early to start a book given the war is still raging but I guess at some point it would be good to have considered academic tomes on the politics and military strategy for this conflict as I feel it is potentially era defining.

There are books coming out already -I know one individual who has been involved taking aid out to Ukraine is about to publish his story.

Problem at this stage is I don’t think it’s possible to provide any sort of coherent overview - a lot is still not in the public domain (e.g. who knew exactly what about the run up to the invasion), weapons use, some of the tactics and who supplied what will be kept under wraps for quite some time.

I’ve seen some comments from minor but published historians on this and their view is that to publish a worthwhile account you need to wait for a war to be finished for quite some time, in order to get access to anything of a sensitive nature but not wait so long that memories of participants have become clouded.

Here's a good article from The Economist on the state of European military forces. It makes the point that spending alone does not equal readiness, as European militaries tend to have narrow focuses and underspend, relatively speaking, on equipment and supplies.

If you can't access the article, let me know and I'll copy and paste the text.

Head of EU Diplomacy Borrell warned at the Munich Conference that the situation in Ukraine will be resolved on the battlefield within three months. He emphasized Europe's lack of realization about living in a state of war, stressing the need for a fundamentally different approach from political leaders, intermediaries, and public opinion, stating that the situation cannot be addressed with a casual attitude of "let's see next month at the Council of Foreign Ministers."

German Defense Minister Pistorius urged Europe and NATO to brace themselves for the "worst-case scenario" of a war with Russia. Despite his reluctance to make predictions, he suggested that an attack on NATO territory could potentially occur within the next five to eight years.

The head of Lithuania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Landsbergis, has issued a warning that Russia might initiate a surprise attack on NATO countries.
"The most pressing issue is our uncertainty about the timeframe. The fact remains that Russia has the capacity to mobilize an additional 400,000 troops. They are actively manufacturing new tanks and weapons. We are dealing with an extremely assertive neighbor determined to challenge NATO. We must ready ourselves for such a scenario," Landsbergis emphasized.

Specifically:
▫️ An intergovernmental convention on the avoidance of double taxation.
▫️ More than a dozen agreements aimed at supporting Ukraine's reconstruction with influential Japanese organizations such as JICA, JETRO, the Export Credit Agency NEXI, and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation.
▫️ Grant agreements for the implementation of recovery programs, along with several documents between the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine and Japanese companies. These agreements outline the provision of various agricultural machinery and equipment to Ukraine.

Notably, no entity worldwide has previously surpassed the six-year deadline set by manufacturers. T

A critical shortage of Western-supplied equipment and fears of a complete cessation of US military aid forced Ukrainian forces to disperse equipment across the front, which likely encouraged Russian forces to take advantage of the situation.
