What little things in your day to day life bring you joy?

I have been feeling extremely down and low over the past few months and kind of focusing on the negative parts of my life/things that may be going wrong or not working out. I’m sick of feeling sad all of the time and have decided to try and focus on the things that bring me happiness each day, even little things like getting comfy in bed at night and reading a good book.

I wanted to create this post because I’m interested in what other people get enjoyment out of in their average day and also I kind of find it comforting to hear.

I bought a picture last year from a charity shop, it’s an original piece of art and it was in the hundreds which is A-LOT for me. But I love it and look at it every single day. It’s absolutely priceless and makes me happy. It’s titled Summer and all her promises

I bought a hanging disco ball planter, and I have it hanging from the curtain rail in my living room with a lovely trailing plant.

Every day when the sun hits it and it bounces the light around, it fills my heart with happiness!

That is beautiful ,i love how you can lose yourself in art.

Not having to go to hospital
Ice cold water to drink
Really good hot chocolate made with whole milk and real chocolate, not drinking chocolate powder
Blue sky
The little fat robin redbreast who sits on a branch opposite my window

Shining the sink

Fresh smelling laundry

Hoovered floors

Lighting a candle

Hot cuppa with a magazine

Playing music or a podcast

Doing my skincare

Cooking a home cooked meal

A lovely hot shower every morning.

Iim old enough to remember not having a shower. Then having a pathetic little shower, with cold plastic curtains, over the bath, in an unheated north facing bathroom in Scotland, brrrrrrrrrr.
Now ours is an enclosed shower cubicle with a powerful shower -bliss.

The relationship between my two sons (3 and 8). I have 4 children and I love the way they all interact with each other (some times more than others), but my sons' relationship in particular always makes my heart glow. My older autistic ds is endlessly kind, patient, loving and full of humour with his little brother, who although gorgeous, can be a toddler-monster sometimes. They absolutely adore each other. I hope it never changes.

As a few others have said, going outside every day. I have a dog and dh usually walks him, so I can go all week without leaving the house (wfh). So it takes a huge effort but if I can force myself to go out I feel so much better.

Otherwise the sun always makes me feel happy, even if it's not warm.

Watching plants grow. There's nothing like seeing bulbs come up or leaf buds appear

LemonadeMaid99 · 11/01/2024 19:10

Handmade soap. Hot water bottle and electric blanket. Mixed beans eaten like soup with a buttered crusty roll.

LemonadeMaid99 · 11/01/2024 19:11

Red wine. The outdoors.

I have a few podcasts I like keeping up with on dog walks as well as audio books. I find it hard to turn off at home and will either be running about trying to do everything or zoning out the Netflix, there doesn't seem to be an in-between with me. I find it hard to do things I enjoy if there is housework around, so I'd rather head out and walk the dog and plug in to an hour or two of Woman's Hour, a Booker Prize book, Just a Minute or Desert Island Disks. I've been doing it for about 6 months and have got through 5 books, which is more than I did in a year last year - don't underestimate how nice it is to feel in the loop in that way!

My cat brings me so much joy. She is a tiny and pointless little potato, but she makes me so happy.

I also get a lot of joy from my houseplants.

Bolarpear · 11/01/2024 19:31

Fresh bedding

Good coffee from a lovely cup

Walking the dog with a really good podcast

Actually, podcasts in general! I'm a recent convert and everyday before I leave work I download a new episode for the drive home

A gin or glass of wine on a Saturday night

A clean and fresh house

When DC forget how old they are and hold my hand or spontaneously come in for a hug

Getting new nails

A massage

The dog

These all bring me massive peace and contentment, I'm a dark thinker and rarely feel joy or happy. Even at times when I should feel on top of the world I've always had a fear that something bad will happen as a result of feeling happy. Blame Catholic guilt

My Christmas mugs.

sunshinegirl28 · 11/01/2024 20:10

My morning walk for an hour after I drop off the kids to the bus. Coming back and making a lovely coffee with my coffee machine!
Reading stories to my kids before bed. Tucking them up with cuddles. Then reading my book in the bath and putting my snuggly pyjamas on! Settling down to sleep in a warmed up with electric blanket bed! Bliss!

beeswax candles; the gorgeous incense smell

Do you use a particular beeswax candle @mamakoukla ?
I love the smell of incense but can never seem to get the right smell at home

History or paranormal podcasts at the end of the day.
Long baths.

Small children saying they miss me and want me to be their teacher again.
My job would be awful if it wasn't for the kids.

At work , taking probationers out on their first blue light run - if we go out from the station we have these metal sliding gates , which we have to wait for to open , and they’re not quick, , I sit , and say to the probationer “ When I say now , hit that big red 999 button “ . The gates open , we get out and I say “Now ! “ They hit the button and all the lights and sirens activate . I’ve never had a probbie not go wide eyed and grin. I have had more than one squeal with glee . Little things .

At home , my dog . Getting out on a decent yomp with her like today , even when we both come back filthy ( slid down an embankment on my bum ) is food for the soul . Getting into a warm bath after is bliss as well .

Leaning on my back door looking out at my horses , tea in hand at the beginning of another day , that pleases me too .

Verbena17 · 11/01/2024 21:10

Cup of tea taken back up to bed to watch tele for half hour.
Cup of tea at any other time.
Watching my fave YouTube channels - highly recommend ‘This Alaska Life’.
Cleaning and laundry - when I’m mostly on top of it.
Wrapping gifts - not sure why but I love it!
Walking the dog once I make myself get outside.
Chatting to my kids.
Feeling cosy (lighting a candle/putting my Neom on)
Getting all comfy in bed at night and watching a good series before laying down to sleep.
Seeing buds appearing on trees.
Watching kites (the bird) fly over our garden.
Waving at the Robin and squirrels who come in the garden.
Feeding sugar water to exhausted bees.
Oops didn’t mention my DH 😬😂

LaurieStrode · 11/01/2024 21:16

Poking around an old garden, mine or somebody else's, in early spring to see what's emerging. Bonus points if it's rainy and muddy.

Rain in general (I know, don't hate me!)

Ibizafun · 11/01/2024 21:20

Having lunch with friends and kids outside at a mountain restaurant after an amazing morning's skiing with blue sky, great food, music/show and a mulled wine.

Apart from that my cats!
