What little things in your day to day life bring you joy?

I have been feeling extremely down and low over the past few months and kind of focusing on the negative parts of my life/things that may be going wrong or not working out. I’m sick of feeling sad all of the time and have decided to try and focus on the things that bring me happiness each day, even little things like getting comfy in bed at night and reading a good book.

I wanted to create this post because I’m interested in what other people get enjoyment out of in their average day and also I kind of find it comforting to hear.

Another vote for an electric blanket.

Putting on my favourite scent after a shower even if I'm not going anywhere.

The only thing that really stops me being down is sunshine, preferably with 25 C degree or more heat. No wonder I am so miserable living in the UK!

Have a hot drink in a lovely mug. I have my own mug that I love. I'm not precious about it but it does bring me joy. I've had other mugs that have broken but there's always another one out there.

Walks in the woods
Baking

Cuddling the dog
Cuddling the kids (if they let me!)
Cuddling DH all night
Decluttering a shit tip bit of the house.
Doing a good presentation in front of people and marvelling that I can do it.
Walking up mountains and in forests
My electric throw
A cup of tea with a slice of cake undisturbed by everyone
A long bath
A brilliant TV show like The Wire.
Laughing with friends over rubbish.
Appreciating little things makes me very happy.

Going bed at 9pm and spending the next 2 hours reading!

I also love talking my dogs out for a long walk on a cold frosty evening. Especially when the sky is clear and you can see the stars.... or summer evenings by the lake watching the ducks! (My evening walks do have seasonal pleasures!)

Oh and I usually look forward to Friday evening, DH cooks or we have a Takeaway and afterwards he'll look after the DC. I can put my feet up and say F- you all, I am done!!

Funderthighs · 11/01/2024 12:44

Scented candles, fairy lights, fluffy socks, hand cream, a face mask, a magazine, playing a board game, embroidery, a walk by the sea , (whatever the weather), an open fire. These always fill me with cheer.

EmpressaurusOfTheSevenOceans · 11/01/2024 12:46

My foster cats snuggling up to me in bed.

Texts from friends.

Coffee and cake at my favourite local coffee shop.

A weights session at the gym.

TommyNever · 11/01/2024 12:47

I enjoy vivid, interesting and atmospheric dreams, fortunately most nights.

mamakoukla · 11/01/2024 12:47

Opening the windows and airing the house
Fresh bed sheets
A good moisturizer in the winter
Sunshine filtering through the clouds
Sunsets and sunrises
Working on a piece of music
The restful feeling of a body after exercise
Walking outside
The satisfaction of a clean and tidier house
Laundry fresh off the line
… I could go on. Just seek joy in as many things as you can. It’s a great goal

mamakoukla · 11/01/2024 12:53

VioletCharlotte · 11/01/2024 13:26

First cup of coffee in the morning while catching up on the news and social media
Walks with my dog
Listening to audio books when in the car
Skincare and make up
A bar of chocolate
Finding a good TV series to get engrossed in
Looking at TikTok videos for ideas for weekend breaks
Buying myself a bunch of flowers or a pot plant
Using essential oils on my diffuser
Putting the fire on and lighting candles

foreverbasil · 11/01/2024 13:28

Making and eating soup. It's a special sort of comfort food for January days.
Doing puzzles.
Getting out for a walk wrapped up on even the gloomiest day. Fifteen minutes at lunchtime makes a difference.

I find doing things mindfully - meaning slowly and really focussing on the sensations - helps a lot.

You can just chuck on a pair of socks, or you can take a moment to look at the options, choose a pair you really like for some reason, appreciate the feeling and feel pleased about it.

So I don't personally think it matters what, so much as how. Mindfulness and appreciation of whatever you are doing is a habit you can practice easily.

In general though all the suggestions on here are good - good food, exercise, pets, baths, routines, books etc etc.

I love that idea, I’m really going to try and be more mindful.

My garden and my indoor plants.
Audiobooks - pop on my noise cancelling headphones and clean!
Time spent with my cat and dog, is time well spent.
Candles, even during the summer days.
Relaxing bath before bed.
Chatting to my elderly neighbour. She’s fun, witty, with a great sense of humour.
Walk with the dog in nature.
