What little things in your day to day life bring you joy?

I have been feeling extremely down and low over the past few months and kind of focusing on the negative parts of my life/things that may be going wrong or not working out. I’m sick of feeling sad all of the time and have decided to try and focus on the things that bring me happiness each day, even little things like getting comfy in bed at night and reading a good book.

I wanted to create this post because I’m interested in what other people get enjoyment out of in their average day and also I kind of find it comforting to hear.

Morning coffee, especially at the weekend when I'm the only one up early. And not just the drinking, but the 'ritual' of making espresso on the stove! There's something kind of 'mindful' about it.
Afternoon tea (there's a theme here 😂): loose leaf in a beautiful teapot.
Sitting in my favourite chair reading before anyone else gets up, or in the evening with the fire lit and a glass of wine.
A few years ago I tried writing down one positive thing each day. I lasted a good few months and it was really therapeutic. Might try it again!
I hope you feel better soon.

Snowdrops and primroses in the garden
A hot bath most nights
A walk in the winter sunshine
Planning our summer holiday: researching day trips, restaurants, etc

Natsku · 11/01/2024 15:54

Reading before bed, when everyone else is asleep and I can read in peace.

Cups of tea.

Sauna.

Biggest thing - Being around people (I'm studying at the moment, so I go to school every day and spend the day around other people and laughing and joking with them). Before I started my course I would go weeks or months even without hanging out with anyone except my family and I didn't realise just how much it means to me to talk to other people.

Morning coffee!
the feeling of the house being clean and tidy
My dog (sad i know)

Why sad? These are all beautiful/lovely things!

Naimee87 · 11/01/2024 16:00

How fast my dog runs to the fridge as soon as its opened no matter what she is doing, the fridge opening takes priority 😃& trying new skipping challenges

Crafts - mostly knitting and crochet. It's very meditative and I feel the stress literally melting away. Plus you have the satisfaction of having made something yourself.

Also, walks in green spaces and connecting with people. Absolutely essential for my well-being. The early days of lockdown were hellish without these.

NYnewname · 11/01/2024 16:12

If Mr Newname is up before me (it varies), he brings me a cup of tea in bed.

I open the curtains - which I can do without getting out of bed - get lovely and comfy under the duvet and read my book for 10 minutes before getting up to face the day.

When I was working full time I had to get up at 530 and creep around trying not to disturb anyone. Not having an alarm go off and not having to get up to make that all important first cup of tea is absolute bliss.

Lifting my dog out of her bed in the morning and letting her outside for a wee.
Shes always warm and sleepy and her fur smells of digestive biscuits.

LetMeDream · 11/01/2024 16:37

I like listening to podcasts and looking through my new seed catalogues.
I've also been browsing for some new art work online.
A nice cup of coffee and a sit down in the quiet also does the trick .

JenniferJupiterVenusandMars · 11/01/2024 16:37

Lots of things
My dog grinning at me, walking the dog and seeing the world through her eyes, the first primrose is out in the garden, the clouds tinged with a pinky yellow at sunrise this morning, meeting friends for a chat this afternoon, a warm house, a hot chocolate before bed….
Being able to pretty much do whatever I like now I’m retired.
Learning a new hobby, a good book or getting immersed in a podcast…l

Putting the electric throw into my bed at level 4 an hour before bedtime so that when I get into bed it feels INCREDIBLE.

I am so doing this

Fluffyc1ouds · 11/01/2024 16:48

When I'm sleeping and my cat comes and sleeps next to me.
Getting the woodburner lit and feeling the room warm up.
A nice big glass of red wine (I'm currently doing Dry Jan, argh).
My little boy climbing into bed with me in the morning.
Getting into bed with the electric blanket on high.

Tarkan · 11/01/2024 16:54

We've been going through some really hard times recently but this boy always helps me through. He always knows just when to come cuddle into me.

Something for the senses e.g. working with colour (in any medium) or looking at art books; lighting something that smells nice (try Vectis Karma for incense or the Flora Lab for candles & more); a soft-covered hot water bottle on a cold night.

This might sound a little bit twee but as part of my daughter's bedtime routine we both tell each other some things we are grateful for from the day, before bed. It is a little boost of positivity and it helps to focus on what went well, even on a shit day.

I might say I'm grateful for my new book or grateful for my telephone call with my brother. That kind of thing.

Verv · 11/01/2024 17:18

My dog. His routines and foibles make me smile a lot and I like being forced to take him (and me) for a walk every day even when I cant be bothered. His happiness makes me happy.

Watching a couple of hours of Netflix in bed before going to sleep. It's my only "alone" time during the week. I have comfort shows that I cycle between so I dont have to keep my eyes open all the time.

Ibizafun · 11/01/2024 17:31

It's really strange. Perhaps I just have too much to appreciate and get joy from the things and people I have. I don't even know what would bring me absolute joy. Which just shows you that the capacity for joy is nothing whatsoever to with what you have!

muddyford · 11/01/2024 17:33

The first cup of tea with DH. And even more the second with the dogs.
Toast and marmalade after my muesli (not every day, but nice when I have time).
Walking said dogs in the winter sunshine.
Chatting to DM on the 'phone.
Watching my Lab parade his squeaky carrot round the place.

Tea in bed in the morning. I set my alarm for 6.30, 20 mins before I get the kids up, so that I can sit up in bed with my lovely Anthropologie cup and do Wordle or read Mumsnet in peace. Then when I get the kids up I already feel poised and at one with the world.

I do this, but I set it for an hour earlier to give me plenty of time. With 20 mins that you do, by the time you go to loo and make tea surely there is not much time left for reading?

You're right! Not much - 10 precious minutes have slipped by by the time I've had my wee made my tea and got back into bed, but I hop out, rustle up the kids, and hop back in until they emerge from their bedrooms (they shower at night) which gives me a few extra moments!

Maybe I'll try 6.20 tomorrow... 😆

egowise · 11/01/2024 18:09

Cat cuddles!
Nice dinner
My udii
Heated underblanket for my bed

SmallestInTheClass · 11/01/2024 18:12

Another one for a good cup of tea. As a treat, I like to make loose leaf chai, with hot milk. A real comfort drink.
Also love 10 minutes to walk in the park, it's only 5 mins from the house so try to do this every day. I often end up walking further once I'm out.

Moonshine5 · 11/01/2024 18:13

Atm I watch an episode of Working Moms

frozendaisy · 11/01/2024 18:16

Perfect boiled egg with buttered toast.

Arabaloosa · 11/01/2024 18:19

My animals all happy makes me happy. Love listening to the horses contentedly munching hay, and the dog snoring softly in front of the log burner. Also love a long hot shower, and coming out smelling nice and feeling clean. A well brewed cup of tea, and some nice biscuits/piece of cake always soothes my soul too! Hope you feel better soon
